Artist: The Black Keys

The Black Keys and the Flaming Lips, who released a 73 split for Record Store Day 2009, are currently on a little mini tour together. Last night, they played their penultimate show in Atlanta, performing at outdoor venue Aaron's Ampitheatre At Lakewood. We sent Matthew Smith to check out the action.

We get the weekend movies off to a start today with a documentary about an often ignored former hotbed of punk & new wave, Akron, OH. Ohio in general was pretty good for rock & roll bands, but Akron specifically was really good. Hanni El Khatib ’s formula is simple and reminiscent of the nonchalant coolness that usually goes along with slicked-back hair, rolled up sleeves that disguise the boxy outline of a quickly thinning pack of cigarettes, and motorcycle gang tattoos. BottleRock is the biggest festival to ever happen in Napa Valley, attracting headliners like Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, and Jane's Addiction. With a projected crowd of 35,000 capacity, this is the kind of cash cow that could save a local economy-in-peril. When I saw the lineup for the brand new  Bottle Rock Napa Valley  festival, my jaw dropped. The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, The Shins, Flaming Lips, Alabama Shakes, Andrew Bird, Edward Sharpe, Dirty Projectors, Iron and Wine, Mavis Staples, Sharon Van Etten, Best Coast... the list went on and on . At the end of last year, Song Dogs , an independent prairie-heavy roots rock band from Philadelphia released their debut ten track LP, Wild Country . The band consists of inner-city high school teachers, a poet, a law student, and a Liberian immigrant who, because of gender stereotyping, was not allowed to play drums in her homeland. I picked up so much vinyl this year...I'm not even sure how I'm going to pay rent.  And isn't that what good music is about?  Living in a van...down by the river.  There wasn't a release this year that I went in excited about...but I came out loving almost everything I purchased.  I've had the chance to listen to most of my purchases and have heard a lot of other stuff.  And the Calexico album

Lollapalooza Brazil 's return to Sao Paulo for the third year in a row went off without a hitch March 29-31, despite competition organizers faced from Rock in Rio, the largest festival in the world, also based in Brazil. There is something inherently romantic about the music of the Tuareg people. From Saharan Africa they are part freedom fighters, part Nomadic herdsmen and part bluesmen. If you’re familiar with the most famous exponents of this music, Tinariwen, then you know what to expect. Deceptively loose sounding guitar riffs heavily tinged and steeped in the blues tradition laid down over a lolloping laid back groove. Vocals delivered in a higher register than their Western brothers, the occasional chanting and syncopated clapped rhythms all slowly and deliberately building up in blistering dervish.
