Movie of the Week: It's Everything, And Then It's Gone (2003)

Movie of the Week: It's Everything, And Then It's Gone (2003) We get the weekend movies off to a start today with a documentary about an often ignored former hotbed of punk & new wave, Akron, OH. Ohio in general was pretty good for rock & roll bands, but Akron specifically was really good. Bands that came from there, or had origins there (new wave or otherwise), include Devo, the Black Keys, the James Gang, Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders (check the lyrics to "My City Was Gone"), The Cramps, and quite a few others...(Rubber City Rebels anyone?). Throw in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland, and the list gets really [...]

Review/Listen: Hanni El Khatib – Head in the Dirt

Review/Listen: Hanni El Khatib – Head in the Dirt Hanni El Khatib ’s formula is simple and reminiscent of the nonchalant coolness that usually goes along with slicked-back hair, rolled up sleeves that disguise the boxy outline of a quickly thinning pack of cigarettes, and motorcycle gang tattoos. Khatib ’s debut,  Will The Guns Come Out?,  toyed with blues-inspired garage rock, and generally introduced himself as a character. Head in the Dirt is simply another chapter for the character of Hanni El Khatib who, guided by producer Dan Auerbach of [...]

Napa Valley’s BottleRock fest deflects haters

Napa Valley’s BottleRock fest deflects haters Real estate developer-turned-lawyer Bob Vogt has done a cool thing. He finally took all that dough he made flipping houses and lawyering, and put it into something sexy: Music. BottleRock is the biggest festival to ever happen in Napa Valley, attracting headliners like Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, and Jane's Addiction. With a projected crowd of 35,000 capacity, this is the kind of cash cow that could save a local economy-in-peril. Impressively, when Vogt made the initial announcement for the festival, tickets sold so quickly he became worried he may run out [...]

Bottle Rock Napa Valley: Festival Preview, Ft. The Black Keys, The Shins + More

When I saw the lineup for the brand new  Bottle Rock Napa Valley  festival, my jaw dropped. The Black Keys, Kings of Leon, The Shins, Flaming Lips, Alabama Shakes, Andrew Bird, Edward Sharpe, Dirty Projectors, Iron and Wine, Mavis Staples, Sharon Van Etten, Best Coast... the list went on and on . Plus, the festival is in the heart of Bay Area wine country, just an hour driving distance from San Francisco. I had to go. Well, the festival is happening in a mere week, and I'll be there. Find me happily sipping wine  from a local [...]

Listen: Song Dogs – “Wild Country”

Listen: Song Dogs – “Wild Country” At the end of last year, Song Dogs , an independent prairie-heavy roots rock band from Philadelphia released their debut ten track LP, Wild Country . The band consists of inner-city high school teachers, a poet, a law student, and a Liberian immigrant who, because of gender stereotyping, was not allowed to play drums in her homeland. The writing process consisted of four of the band members which in turn makes  Wild Country a musically diverse release, encompassing everything captivating of this unique genre. "The [...]

Right Place, Right Time: An Interview with Dr. John

Right Place, Right Time: An Interview with Dr. John "Mac" Rebennack, Jr. aka Dr. John BY JORDAN MAINZER The only thing weirder than seeing a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer in normal clothes is seeing a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who normally wears a headdress in normal clothes. On April 17, I was lucky enough to speak to Mac Rebennack, Jr., better known by his stage moniker Dr. John, after his show at SPACE Evanston. The short experience flew by: whether that was a result of a couple Goose Island brews and a 10 dollar black [...]

The 11 Best Record Store Releases (Triple List)

I picked up so much vinyl this year...I'm not even sure how I'm going to pay rent.  And isn't that what good music is about?  Living in a van...down by the river.  There wasn't a release this year that I went in excited about...but I came out loving almost everything I purchased.  I've had the chance to listen to most of my purchases and have heard a lot of other stuff.  And the Calexico album

Pase a revisar.

Bombino – Nomad

There is something inherently romantic about the music of the Tuareg people. From Saharan Africa they are part freedom fighters, part Nomadic herdsmen and part bluesmen. If you’re familiar with the most famous exponents of this music, Tinariwen, then you know what to expect. Deceptively loose sounding guitar riffs heavily tinged and steeped in the blues tradition laid down over a lolloping laid back groove. Vocals delivered in a higher register than their Western brothers, the occasional chanting and syncopated clapped rhythms all slowly and deliberately building up in blistering dervish. They don’t call this stuff desert blues for nothing. [...]
