"My favourite record store in New Zealand is called Conch, and it's located in a suburb called Ponsonby in Auckland." "I like it for several reasons. Ultimately, they stock the kind of music I like: reissues of 602s/702s world music obscurities and the like. And they are great sales people for the music I've put out under different monikers, especially when it comes to putting it in the hands of people from out of town that come through the shop. It's also a great hub for the musical [...]

The Black Seeds' Dust and Dirt is admirable, if average. The Black Seeds are not just a reggae band, though their work is clearly grounded in that genre. On their fifth release, Dust and Dirt, The Black Seeds roam a broader musical territory: funk, ska, dub, disco, blues, even rock. Does this kind of variety make the disc any good? Yes. And no. About Dust and Dirt, the Seeds' fifth, the band has discussed how this album marks the first project to come from their...
Luck-One , perennial star of the Northwest gives the people the visual they've been itching for. "Black Seed", the first single off of Beautiful Music 2 , is his choice. Dizz is featured on the hook as well, killing it as usual, also can be found on the hook for "Murderers, the second single. Shouts out to V1Creative for the direction for the video. Shot in what seems to be an abandoned garage or warehouse, we get a better feel for the deeper message Luck is trying to convey. It's nice to see someone break out of [...]
Luck-One is definitely one of my favorite artists coming out of the North West. Today him and Dekk decided to drop visuals from their Beautiful Music Part 2 project.

Dust And Dirt is the fifth studio album from the multi-platinum selling group, The Black Seeds , whose unique brand of reggae-funk fusion has seen their fan base spread around the world in recent years. It follows up The Black Seeds' critically acclaimed 2009 album Solid Ground , which was hailed as "...a damn fine record...thick, bottom-heavy, and melodic" by The Huffington Post and "...the forefront of reggae today and tomorrow" by JamBase . The album debuted in the top [...]

Yesterday my perspective changed, if only for the time it takes to listen through an album. Dust and Dirt planted a filter over my views of the natural world; a simple reminder to slow down. The album serves as the seventh studio release from The Black Seeds, a New Zealand based electro-reggae group and features 14 songs. It was during the first song that I was eased into my organic mental transformation. I find myself focusing on the sun shown across the blue blanket covering my environment, the wind that the pollen had been [...]

Did you know that Record Store Day (April 21) is less than two weeks away? Are you ready? What have you done to prepare yourself for it? Today is a perfect day to make a test run to your local shop, where you can scout for the best positions and flex the required muscles by filling up your basket with some of this week's worthwhile new releases. At the top or your stack (or maybe the bottom, as it's likely to be the first thing you grab today), should be the anticipated full-length debut from the soulful-beyond-their-years [...]

So we're big fans of New Zealand act The Black Seeds' fellow Kiwi soulmen Electric Wire Hustle (one of our standouts from SXSW, most definitely); and while The Black Seeds maybe have not reached the acclaim in the States (except maybe former Seed Oscar-winning! Bret McKenzie, who's probably best known for his work on Flight of the Conchords ) that EWH has, the Wellington dub act is no doubt a force to be familiar with. New track "Pippy Pip" is a great islands-tinged halfstep tune that while heavy on the reggae feel is light on any weird works-against-the-song white [...]

For everyone who complains about hip-hop being too commercialized; this is real hip-hop! After his latest video "Farewell" gave us a premonition of his departure from the rap game Luck One , along with producer and second half the duo, Dekk have decided to give us the first single entitled "Black Seed" off their upcoming tape Beautiful Music 2 . Having gotten a sneak peak at the album I can firmly say that this is an incredible tape, very solid. Check the download and streaming links below and be sure to follow Luck One on Twitter! [...]

By Trevor Meyer Awesome music continues to pour out of New Zealand. If you're new to this Wellington-based band, consider this your chance to get funky with the high-acclaimed Kiwi band, The Black Seeds. The soulful "Cool me Down" comes to us off the band's third album, Into the Dojo . If you see an angry bro in a social situation who is taking that "defensive lion position" (you know what I'm talking about) cool him down with this throwback. He [...]

We are pleased to welcome the return of DJ Evil Vince to Muzzle of Bees. He will once again be providing compilations that unearth the music of the far off corners of the world. Which brings us to the current compilation: Aotearoa Kauri . This is defined as: Land of The Long White Cloud [New Zealand] Kauri [Tree]. Agathis australis or Kauri's are trees that are found on the North Island of Aotearoa. They are some of the largest and most ancient trees in the world. I snapped [...]

The Black Seeds are easily my favorite modern reggae act, with dub and rock elements to keep things progressive. They recently released a compilation of live tracks in December ( Live: Vol 1 ), and we have a fresh cut from that, plus another infectious tune from their 2008 release Solid Ground . This 9-piece band is always on the road, and you lucky New Zealand dwellers can catch them live in the upcoming weeks. The Black Seeds - The Answer (Live At the Melkweg, [...]

CD REVIEW Fat Freddy's Drop: Dr. Boondigga & the Big BW (The Drop) The Black Seeds: Solid Ground (Easy Star) It must be something in the sausage rolls. How else to explain the remarkable claim of New Zealand to be the southern hemisphere's answer to Jamaica? In truth, I haven't heard this claim made explicitly, but added to the the existing library of Kiwi reggae (Ruia, Trinity Roots, [...]
