Time for a little bit of aural time travel. Let's look back, reflect, and contemplate... what were we listening to one year ago ? Listen to the April 2012 One Year Ago Mix and find out. You can stream (and scrobble ) all the songs in this mix using the ex.fm player at the bottom of the page OR you can just download any or all of the tracks at your leisure and play them using a digital media player of your choice. Seeing as Mildred has been preventing me posting this any earlier by doing pretty much exactly what she is doing in that picture - i.e. sitting in my lap and DEMANDING attention - I figured I might as well start off with a cute cat picture. This is the internet after all. Anyhow, welcome to the Friday Fives, where I fire in links to five things which have caught my eye this week, and you either slag me off for being shallow, infantile and easily impressed or chip in with your own interesting stuff in the comments section. [...]

The Stiffcast is not the cheap innuendo I am sure you assume it to be. No no no, not that sort of stiff, the sort where every joint and muscle in your body aches because you are woefully out of shape and attempting to run around like a teenager. That sort of stiff. Yes, after three months out with a groin strain (no sniggering at the back, please) I have tried to go back to the gym and to five-a-sides over the last week or two with what can only be described as somewhat [...]

Well of course all anyone in Scotland could possibly be talking about this week would be this Saturday's BAD FUN at Henry's Cellar Bar (with an actual cocktail menu these days, would you fucking believe it) where we will host the fabulous Black Tambourines , the amazing North American War and the awesome Honeyblood . We recorded a Toad Session with the Black Tambourines last time they were here, and it is bloody excellent. If you fancy some videos, an interview and some free tunes, go here . And hopefully see [...]

So, apart from complaining about the snow is there much going on this week? The answer, I think, is not all that much so I thought I might take the opportunity to plug our next BAD FUN gig at Henry's. There are, however, a couple of things going on in which you might be interested, so let's get that dealt with first, shall we. Neu Reekie are hosting a rather interesting-looking Burns Night thing at Summerhall , but it's sold out so umm... well, tough tits really, if you don't have tickets yet. Something you [...]

OneTwoThreeFour by Black Tambourine
Videos: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr Audio : zip download - mp3s below For the utter shame of it, we actually recorded this Toad Session back in December last year. I know we can be a little tardy publishing these fuckers, but this has to be something of a record. I blame the fact that The Leg, The Foxx, Meursault and the Split 123 albums all ended up being released within a month or so of each other for knocking me firmly [...]
The Black Tambourines - Bad Days (Toad Session) from Song, by Toad on Vimeo . This week I have been working on The Black Tambourines ' brilliant Toad Session which we recorded... wait for it... back in December 2011. Fuck me, the shame of such epic procrastination weighs heavily on my brow, I promise you. Anyhow, I was intending to edit them in the Spring, but in the Spring I was utterly overwhelmed by releases from The Leg, Jesus H. Foxx, Meursault and the Song, by Toad Split 123. [...]

Black Tambourine were only around for a couple of years in the late '80s/early '90s, but their shoegaze sound made them one of the most beloved and influential indie pop bands of their era. In fact, Black Tambourine were the band behind Slumberland Records' very first single. Archie Moore found a concurrent role as guitarist/vocalist in Velocity Girl (named after the Primal Scream song on the C86 compilation), another melodic indie rock band that went against the grunge grain in the early-to-mid '90s. Former Black Tambourine bandmates Archie and [...]

Haven't heard about Bart and Friends yet? Well, if you follow the Australian pop scene, then surely you're aware of bands like Lucksmiths , Zebras and Black Tambourine ...all which have members in this wonderful supergroup of sorts. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they're releasing their There May Come a Time EP on one of our favorite labels, Matinee Recordings . This is precisely the sort of gems the label is known for, featuring some of the best pop you're going to [...]

Black Tambourine, "By Tomorrow"
Stream: Black Tambourine- "What's Your Game" Until this year, noisy twee pop legends Black Tambourine had been defunct for over two decades. However, with this year bringing the arrival of the 20th anniversary of '90s indie pop zine chickfactor , which vocalist Pam Berry co-founded, the band has decided to come out of hibernation for a handful of a shows and a new EP. Titled OneTwoThreeFour , the EP features no original material, but rather four covers of songs by The Ramones. Above is a link [...]
Boston indie pop sensations Earthquake Party premiered the video embedded above for its cataclysmic hit "Pretty Little Hand" over at the Boston Phoenix's On The Download blog earlier tonight. As you can see, it is a monster. A deceptively simple performance clip comprised of tight shots that shudder under the pressure of the band's tightly compacted and euphoric pop. There are additional insights from the clip's director over at On The Download. We last wrote about Earthquake Party here in February on the eve of the band's first tour, and in the [...]
Black Tambourine existed only briefly in the early ‘90s, scattering a handful of tracks across EPs and compilations. The band’s output was limited, but the strength of the songs made up for their paucity. In front of walls of thorny guitar feedback, singer Pam Berry conversed about love and loss with the naïveté of Phil Spector’s girl groups, her “cute” voice exuded innocence. As a result, the band is often tagged as pioneers of twee pop, though Berry hates the label. Black Tambourine initially disbanded in 1992 when its members became busy with other obligations—guitarist Mike Schulman was [...]

Ian and myself were down in Brighton for most of last week with The Great Escape, and that's pretty much what this podcast is about from start to finish. It's hardly a studied analysis of course - and I sincerely doubt you'd expect one - instead it's more of a chatter about the Brighton fun we've had and the people we've met. Scotland is actually rather isolated when it comes to music. Hence, I suppose, the importance of the local Scottish music community to bands and labels based up here. Nevertheless, it is really important to connect with [...]

The OneTwoThreeFour EP sounds like a band that never went on a rather lengthy hiatus, and they take some iconic material and make it their own. It's fitting that the seminal late '80s/early '90s American quasi-shoegazer band Black Tambourine have finally come out of retirement after some 20-plus years to release an EP, notwithstanding a set of songs they recorded for their 2010 eponymous retrospective record. It's fitting, considering the entire Black Tambourine catalogue was issued initially either on seven-inch singles or compilations, so the fact that their first bona fide reunion statement is a four song [...]

Black Tambourine ’s four-song Ramones tribute EP, OneTwoThreeFour (like Dee Dee’s signature shout that triggered each song) is available for pre-order from BT guitarist Mike Schulman’s local label, Slumberland Records . The official release date is May 15 for this double 7” and digital download, which also features backing vocals from Rose Melberg, another Dee Dee (from the Dum Dum Girls), Lisa Smith, and Jenny Robbins from Honeymoon Diary. Check out “What’s Your Game”, awash in beautiful shimmering fuzz and squall: Black Tambourine reunited in April for [...]
