Yuck, who hails from London, played two nights in a row this week at The Independent in San Francisco. They remind me of several 90s bands, many from Boston, and I wouldn't be surprised if they've never heard of any of them. The Blake Babies (with Juliana Hatfield), Fuzzy and a non Boston band, Elastica. Here is a track by Yuck called "Get Away". In the mid-90s I caught this band called Fuzzy locally. It has a similar vibe and the guitars sound very similar. Listen to [...]

the name, or the man, john p. strohm may not necessarily ring a bell, but the man, in my world, is legendary. he started off playing drums in punk bands in his hometown of bloomington, in - a town i still want to get to one day, then after moving to boston he played guitar in the much beloved blake babies w/ juliana hatfield. the first time i heard their 89 release earwig was in high school, and while i was still into really horrible metal at the time, i would put it up there dinosaur jr's [...]

Naked Hearts From: Brooklyn, New York, United States New York scuzz rockers Naked Hearts (first featured on the Devil's blog in February 2009, Love Stripped Bare since when they seem to have dropped the definitive article) are back with their debut LP, Mass Hysteria . Blake Babies: Rain [ Purchase ] The Blake Babies are Juliana Hatfield, John Strohm and Freda Love. They met while all were attending college in Boston in 1986. The story is this: Juliana painfully shy but desperate to play music and find kindred spirits; Freda, outgoing, loved by many follows Juliana to her dorm one day after seeing her walking through campus all the time with her guitar...asks her to come jam with her and a friend some time. At the tme Juliana had never played an electric guitar let [...]

Juliana Hatfield in 2001, by Get Off Your Knees! Special thanks to the talented Marta from friendly blog Dadanoias.net for drawing my attention to this. Fansite getoffyourknees.com has some live pictures from the Blake Babies shows in 2001, and a number of live and session recordings (including a BBC Radio 1 Evening Session recording I remember taping in 1993!) from Juliana. Well worth a visit I'd say! MP3: Juliana Hatfield - Spin the Bottle (BBC Evening Session October 1993)
If this is the sort of chapter that got cut from Juliana Hatfield's memoir , you surely have to read the stuff that made it? On the night that Carl and Evan's mom came over, we had a bunch of boxes of shrink-wrapped Nicely, Nicely albums stacked up in the condo pad. Gary, who happened to be there at the condo pad that night, and who happened to be what some people might characterize as "radically progressive" politically, and very knowledgeable, seemed very interested in Carl. Gary asked Carl where he was from. [...]

Blake Babies: Boiled Potato [ Purchase ] The Blake Babies were college music darlings in the early 90s. Their jangly rock style paired with the the girly and sweet vocals of Juliana Hatfield made them stand out from the grunge scene. As many will know, Juliana Hatfield went solo after a few albums with the Blake Babies and became another college music darling in her own right over the years. This song is sung like a love song to a potato. If you replace all mentions of potato [...]
I am on vacation, but it's a staycation. With the wedding and then Thanksgiving, I figured I'd just take the in-between days off. I just listened all the way through the new Juliana Hatfield CD "How To Walk Away" (released August, 2008.) This album is so perfect that it prompted an immediate, somewhat bungled, blog post! The lyrics are honest and appeal to where I am at the moment. Maybe, the lyrics to track 5, "Just Lust" are too honest. That song is almost mean, but honesty can be cruel. "Remember November" should be experienced [...]

As I've said a lot has been going on the past few months for me. One of the more recent turn of events for me was having PRK surgery to correct my vision. The pain wasn't half as bad as I expected based on my reading of blogs and messages boards on the subject, but the healing time was pretty slow - nearly a month of horribly blurred vision and tired eyes. I'm happy to say I just about have 20/20 vision, something I haven't been able to say since middle school, my eyes still get tired and [...]

I'm back with your Friday theme post. This week's theme is, well, body parts (obviously). I've kept it clean, so no songs about genitals (though I do have the entire catalogue of Peaches).
