I know the Blue Aeroplanes are still around dolling out their beatnik bop art, because I saw them down in Texas last year, so I'm pretty sure that main aeroplane Gerard Langly hasn't relocated to Vancouver, BC. The other day, I got an email from Pop Echo (who brought us Outdoor Miners ) up in the great white north about a record they're putting out by Vancouver, BC band Peace that had me seeing blue. These Canadian fellows construct sharp cornered grooves that give singer/talker/poet Dan Geddes [...]

Whenever people discuss landmines they always show you pictures, either of the device itself, which is a harmless enough looking tin can, or they show you 'plucky survivors' with nicely sealed stumps and big grins - people who are presumably just happy not to be dead. You don't see a lot of the destroyed bodies of the people who are victims to these things - which is to say that because people seem to want to show us stories of courage in the face of adversity, we seem to miss out on understanding just how many human souls we utterly [...]

Thursday started with the Austin Town Hall show at the Ghost Room. This turned out to be a brilliant decision, they had free breakfast tacos, coffee and beer. I consumed in that order. As for music, Australia's Crayon Fields were the first on the menu. I love both their records on Chapter Music and they were a great start to the day with their Zombies-esque songs. [...]
Greetings from Austin, Texas, where the music flows like... well, the complimentary alcohol. Yesterday we bounced around town trying to find some new acts and checking out some old favorites. Here's a peek at something old and something new from Thursday: Smith Westerns [ download ] Smith Westerns are a Chicago quartet whose eponymous debut was released in 2009 on HoZac Records . We caught the young band at the NPR day party at The Parish, where they outshone higher billed acts like [...]

i'm addicted to blip at the moment, enough to upload songs to blip myself rather than relying on what's out there. and today i did a bit of a tribute to the city of bristol theme. ::: beatnik filmstars - apathetic english ::: flying saucer attack - beach red lullaby ::: crescent - 360 ::: girlboy girl - unfamiliar ::: massive attack - daydreaming ::: the heads - quad ::: k.s.kollective - (to a) secret brother ::: [...]

by Scott Schinder In its 23-year existence, the Austin, Texas-based South by Southwest music festival/industry gathering has always mirrored the mood of both the mainstream music biz and the alt-rock underground. So it wasn't surprising that the vibe at that this year's SXSW carried an undercurrent of unease over the perilous state of the recorded-music business, even as a horde of young and/or unsigned acts were in town attempting to launch their careers by bypassing traditional business models. While the seismic shifts in the music biz are undeniable, music continues to play as essential a [...]

SXSW 2009. What can we say? Quite a bit actually, it's just taken us a few days to collect our thoughts, tend to our sunburns, detox our systems, and upload all these damn photos (of over seventy bands!). You've no doubt come across a deluge of SXSW recaps left and right since Monday, but frankly most of them left us wanting. So rather than rattle off a simple numbered list of superlatives, we'd prefer to take you through our respective SXSW experiences and impressions day by day. Regardless of [...]

Mapmaker's Daughter is the third release from this NYC based alt bluegrass string band. M Shanghai String Band are clearly one of the best folk/roots outfits in the big apple and that's saying something since of late there's been a ton of great roots music coming out of NYC. Mapmaker's Daughter isn't scheduled to be released until May 5 (w/ a April 7th release party at Joe's Pub) but you can preview the track "Muleskin Girl" here now. Muleskin Girl [...]
While 'Jacket Hangs' is undoubtedly their classic the Blue Aeroplanes had a career that was scattered with gems. And they were quite capable of ditching their low-slung signature guitars for an altogether lighter approach as witnessed on single 'Fun' from 1992. The vocals on this occasion came from guitarist Rodney Allen rather than mainman Gerard Langley with the result that 'Fun' skips along

Wow. This was a tough one. I didn't know which songs to leave off. During my time on the bridge of the Starship Toad , I've been pushing my luck a little bit by including three songs in my posts instead of Matthew's usual two. This is just because I'm an indecisive bugger. Never go to dinner with me if you want to order in a hurry. However I was still utterly at a loss when trying to decide which songs to leave off my post for The Blue Aeroplanes' 1990 masterpiece; Swagger ; the [...]
OK, part two of my attempt to fill in the blanks of Rhino's worthy but incomplete Brit Box chronicling the UK indie scene from 1985 - 2000. (Part One, or Disc Five, is here.) Mind you, these are filtered through...
The Blue Aeroplanes were formed in 1981 in Bristol and despite numerous line-up changes (29 at last count!) included the ever present Gerard Langley as lead singer. They briefly tasted fame when their 1990 album (produced by Gil Norton) 'Swagger' bore 2 singles 'Jacket Hangs' and '…And Stones' that grazed the lower reaches of the UK charts. The former is included here and remains a low-slung

(Editors note: For no particular reason other than I can, the next week or so will be a look back at the music that has informed my current tastes. Specifically Ebglish rock between roughly 1986-1992. I'm going to stay on the slighlty obscure/overlooked side of things but rest assured I did listen to my fair share of Echo, Cure, Siouxsie, Smiths etc etc. I hope you this theme.) The Blue Aeroplanes opened for REM, nuff said. They also produced some of the most poetic English [...]
