In September we toasted the best new bands of 2011 . Bright futures for those guys! But come this time of year it's also important to remember the musical groups who called it a day. Some of these acts were taken from us before their time, while others imploded due to overwhelming apathy. Herewith our look at all of them, good and bad and who? . Thanks again to Matt Neatock for the video production assistance. Please hold your applause until the end. Read More...
I sat aboard the dilapidated and ancient seats on the TTC subway, heading to Kennedy station once again and I got to thinking - what can I do to better my time on this journey? I'm not entirely sure if this is a better way to spend it, but I decided to write down my thoughts for each track that comes up on my iPhone. Sadly, I only decided this was a good idea when I was at Broadview Station but here we go! (these entries have been edited, otherwise it wouldn't be very readable) [...]
The blues - southern New England style courtesy of Sugar Ray & The Bluetones.

Tonight we're in the intimate surroundings of the upstairs room at the Sheffield Academy, complete with a reassuringly sticky floor, as is so often the case in these places. It's nicely full which is good to see. Now I must confess that I'm coming a bit late to the party on this one. So late in fact that everyone else has got their coat and is making for the exit, including the band, who announced in March that this will be their farewell tour. They are of course 'The Bluetones', purveyors of thirteen Top 40 [...]

It's been a while since I went to a music festival on Wollaton Park and this is the first time I've paid. Those freebies were the Heineken festivals of the late eighties and early nineties, halcyon days. Later the historic hall looked down up on the City in the Park and Distortion festivals and now we have Splendour. An odd and slightly off putting name for a music festival if you ask me. The whole thing is organised by Nottingham City Council and ran by DHP Concerts, the [...]

After the blazing sun of the first day, Wychwood wakes up to grey skies and blustering winds. This, however, doesn't alter the festival atmosphere as thousands of revellers are roaming the site looking for something decent for breakfast. Once the distress at paying an hour's wages on a burger has subsided, it's time to find some more great music. Opening the Main Stage are the hotly-tipped My First Tooth . Their current release, 'Territories', has seen rave reviews from the likes of the Fly and The 405. [...]
To Celebrate GIITTV's 90s week. Win Britpop Special tickets! With the reformations of Pulp, Suede and Blur and shows from Primal Scream alongside a run of revisionistic films about the 1990s, including the Creation Records story. In early July we're set to take over GIITTV with a series of features and 'I was there' articles all about the 1990s. It won't just be about Britpop you understand, but those under apreciated acts and albums from the era that inspired most of us to get into guitar music in the first place. If you have any contributions send [...]
There's a growing number of 'smaller' festivals in the UK, some showcasing new bands you've never heard of and some playing host to the golden oldies. Wychwood Festival tries to find the middle ground between rock 'n' roll royalty and hotly tipped underground talent. Held at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, Wychwood Festival brings three days of entertainment across the 3-5 June weekend. Headlining the extravaganza are britpop extraordinaires the Charlatans (pictured above), the Scottish and Irish rockers the Waterboys and [...]

O Brother Where Art Slough! I dropped into The Academy to meet indie upstarts Brother on the afternoon of their sell out Dublin show. One of the most talked about bands of the moment, they've recently adorned the cover of NME, stoked up nostaglia and debate about Brit Pop in equal measures and also managed to incur the wrath of Liam Gallagher! As I descend to Academy Number 2 I'm greeted with the 1, 2, [...]
Try not to say "were you still going, then?" as we discover The Bluetones are planning a farewell tour this September. They have statemented: "After 17 years and 6 albums, The Bluetones have decided that the time has arrived to call it a day and move on to other challenges,"says frontman Mark Morriss."Before disappearing forever though, we will be heading out for one last tour, as a chance to say farewell and thank you to all the fans that have sustained us over these years, with a career spanning Greatest Hits/Best Of... style set of songs. [...]
The band will split following their September tour...

Picture this scene: a dimly-lit bar with a wide variety of liquor lined up alongside its oak walls, the multitude of bottles casting a refraction on the dozen or so guests in the room. A grand piano sits on a small, elevated stage, several feet from your comfortable red silk-laden table. Those around you are [...]

Okay, so this one is a massively late Friday Fives, but there's enough of a day to waste if you still feel like wasting it with me. On this week's podcast we will be kicking off with Thee Single Spy's new single OK Corral, and Alice kindly sent me the video through for it this morning so I figured I would share it with you on this week's Five. The five songs I have chosen today are from a compilation named Arlington Baths, so called because I used to live in a basement flat on Arlington Street in [...]
