This is called the Barfcast because I feel like utter, unmitigated shite this morning, after another awesome evening with Mrs. Toad getting scooshed and playing records. I think I had Weald on at the maximum volume our amp can actually manage. Which, for the record, is pretty fucking loud. So now I am off to get ready for not one, but three gigs. Firstly the Ides of Toad at Henry's, then Lach and Viv Albertine after that, and then Flamin' Hott Toadzzz! in Anstruther tomorrow. When the chance to have a good sleep comes, I think I will [...]

"I Fought The Law" was originally recorded and released by Sonny Curtis and the Crickets in 1959, but was made famous by the Bobby Fuller Four who recorded and released their version of the track in 1965. The track reached number 8 on the charts, but, tragically, just as the song reached the top ten Bobby Fuller was found dead in his parked automobile outside his Los Angeles home. Since that time this song has become one of the most covered songs of all time with versions by Bruce Springsteen, The Dead Kennedy's, Johnny Cash, the Clash, Hank [...]

Wes Anderson's adaptation of Roald Dahl's book Fantastic Mr. Fox was cussin fantastic. I highly recommend it. The music was also just splendid. I could go on…but I'll cut myself off. Here are some of my faves from the film: Alexandre Desplat - "American Empirical Pictures" The Wellingtons - "The Ballad of Dave Crockett" The Rolling Stones - "Street Fighting Man" Bobby Fuller Four - "Let Her Dance" [...]

To go along with "Television Rules The Nation", I'm now going to start doing some film reviews under the name "I saw a film today, oh boy". Starting..... now. I'm a self-proclaimed Wes Anderson fanatic. When I first saw Rushmore in my mid-teens, it was a revelation for me and since then I've been fully captivated by all of his films, even his somewhat less-appreciated recent works like Darjeeling Limited and Life Aquatic . [...]

The Bobby Fuller Four were an amazing Texas combo, one of the best pure rock n roll groups ever . They were an anomaly in the mid 60s, a classic group who enjoyed top 40 hits throughout the British Invasion - a movement that nearly swallowed most American competitors whole and rendered the 50s style rock n roller irrelevant. Few rock titans possessed the raw talent and drive of Bobby Fuller; he could write songs ready made for the radio, was a fine lead guitarist and early on, he produced his own records. Fuller was also the owner of a teen club and various independent record labels, a true rock n roll entrepreneur if such a thing ever existed. [...]
I was underwhelmed by Wes Anderson's last feature length The Darjeeling Limited , mostly because of the soundtrack. The movie's score was dominated by the Kinks' 1970 satirical look at the record industry, Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One —one of my all-time favorite records. But topically, the songs had little if anything to do with Anderson's film. Sure "This Time Tomorrow" and "Strangers" sounded beautiful on the big screen, but lyrically, thery are part of a bigger picture that does not belong nor fit with Anderson. To me, their inclusion felt entirely incongruent. [...]

So I watched the cool new trailer for the new Wes Anderson -directed Fantastic Mr. Fox film and what stuck out for me most (other than the mental stop motion animation) was the songs attached to it. Don't think anybody's really mentioned them so far so here you go. Listen: The Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance Listen: Clarence Carter - Looking For A Fox MP3: The Bobby Fuller Four - Let Her Dance [...]

The Clash didn't cover a lot of songs on their albums, however they had impeccable taste. Here are some of the originals. Wrong 'Em Boyo - The Rulers Brand New Cadillac - Vince Taylor & His Playboys Covered on London Calling I Fought The Law - Bobby Fuller Four Police And Thieves - Junior [...]
