The Grammys were on last night, and even though I watched them, I felt just as disconnected from the alleged art contained within them as ever. I went to the Grammys in 2003 in NYC and at the time was struck by what a spectacle, what a circus it was. It was barely about the music, more about the fashion, the pyrotechnics, the manufactured emotion of the mini-crowd they select to run down to the front, wild in their staged arm-waving enthusiasm -- trying to inject an emotion into the show that doesn't exist in the natural state. If you were asking I'd have to say the strand of indie that gives me the most pleasure is the template as espoused by bands like the Botticellis, namely melodic indie pop. You'll hear it in good Apples in Stereo tunes or in those rarefied classics that the Shins sometimes throw up. The Botticellis plunder the same source from their San Francisco base; harmonies pour forth like water from a Roman

The one area that I have been trying to gain a better knowledge and I have found it challenging, mainly because I do not have the ability to attend shows on a regular basis, is tap into the wealth of music here is Chicago. However, I have a feeling that is all about to change. Today I bring the music of The Interiors . Their sound ranges from straightforward pop to fast-paced and gritty swinging numbers. Never pinned-down, they reference everything from the Pixies to Elvis to traditional African music. If it sounds like an interesting, I would agree, [...]
The Botticellis began when Zack Ehrlich and Alexi Glickman met playing Suzuki violin duets in a southern California kindergarten class. Botticelli means 'little barrel,' a surf term Zack and Alex started using as kids for their favorite California wave. Thursday, after hanging out with some friends in the city, I dashed over to the Bottom of the Hill , barely in time to see The Botticellis ( myspace ) go on stage. I had just enough time to grab a beer and set up to watch the show. Brilliant timing! (Not that I didn't want to see Scrabbel but sometimes it's nice to just pop in and see who you want to see and then leave.) The band went on: Alexi on vocals, [...]

Time is short 'til my departure to San Francisco (okay, via Oakland) tomorrow afternoon for the six-day fiesta of Noise Pop , the Bay Area's best independent music festival. Its proximity on the calendar to the pricey and crowded SXSW means that many of my music blogger friends are opting for Austin and not S.F. I say: their loss. Not that I wouldn't love to go to SXSW (and should probably start saving my kopecks now for 2008), but Noise Pop is just the right size, high quality, varied, and [...]
