1n 1979, Alex Chilton released his debut solo album Like Flies On Sherbert . The album was panned by many critics and often labelled as a terrible album, but the album explored the very make up of Alex Chilton's roots as he ventured into a Memphis Roots Rock territory combined with the energy of Punk. The album was also recorded rather loosely and is at times loose and sloppy Like Flies On Sherbert features a gritty, honest off kilter charm. It is an album that captured the songs in a moment, mistakes, chaos and [...]

"Four hundred or so people lived in Knockemstiff in 1957, nearly all of them connected by blood through one godforsaken calamity or another, be it lust or necessity or just plain ignorance..." If you like your Americana way raw, you'd better start reading Donald Ray Pollock's The Devil All The Time right away. Unputdownable's the word. Soundtrack below. Palace Brothers - Idle Hands Are The Devil's Playthings Sam Collins - Devil In The Lion's Den The Box Tops - I Must Be [...]

The late Alex Chilton became an indie rock icon as the frontman for The Box Tops and Big Star. Between his time with those two acts, however, the songwriter spent some time in the studio recording solo material for the first time. Now, Omnivore Recordings has collected those songs for a new compilation titled Free Again: The "1970" Sessions . The CD and digital versions of the set compile 20 songs, six of which have never seen release. The vinyl edition collects 12 songs over two LPs, with one track being previously unreleased. Stream [...]

As far as star-studded tributes go, the March 26th concert in honor of Big Star arguably shines as the biggest and the brightest. Featuring the likes of Mike Mills and Michael Stipe of R.E.M., The dB's Chris Stamey, members of Yo La Tengo and Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet, Matt McMichaels, and surviving Big Star drummer Jody Stephens, the event at NYC's Baruch College celebrated the music of the band's "lost" album, Third . If doubters or curious fans needed proof said concert was going to be memorable, then check out the clip [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Henry S. Dziekan III, Getty Images Alex Chilton led one of the richest, strangest lives in rock 'n' roll history. He was, at various points in his 43-year career, a soulful teenage hitmaker, a power-pop innovator, a tender folkie, a CBGB punker and a rockabilly rebel, among other things. Beloved by many, unknown to many more, he played in Big Star -- one of the most influential bands of all [...]

"His word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, And I was weary with forbearing and I could not stay." Jeremiah droppin' lyrical science in the King James Bible (20:9) Today we connect the dots between Alex Chilton and a few of his southern contemporaries in the late '60s and early '70s. We begin this journey on April 7-8, 1996, in ... Glasgow, Scotland??? Damn straight, hippie. On those two nights, Alex played now-legendary gigs at The 13th Note with Teenage Fanclub as [...]
Seems like the boys from Butterfly Bones are beginning one of those really awesome weeks: we've heard from the San Francisco locals that they will be opening at the Fillmore Wednesday for synthpop duo La Roux. A little later in the month than previously, here are some of the music people who died in March (since then, of course, Malcolm McLaren has joined the great recording studio in the sky). The Grim Reaper took two notable frontmen from us, Alex Chilton and Mark Linkous, as well as the blues singer Marva Wright (whose version of I Will Survive is as glorious as Gloria's) and grievously underrated folky Lesley Duncan (featured here with one of the few songs Elton John ever covered). Most bizarre was the death of Serbian pop star Ksenjica Pajcin, who apparently was shot [...]
Penny recently said, "Daddy, you're a lion." ... Well, close. Aargh. Oh how the mighty have fallen; I used to get sick once a year, at the most. Now, with a wife working at a medical clinic and a baby playing host to a wide world of germs, I'm finding myself under the weather. Such is life. [...]

Coming from Memphis, Tennessee The Box Tops originally started out in 1963 as The Devilles. The line up changed by 1967 and included Alex Chilton (vocals/guitar), Danny Smythe (drums and founder of the band), John Evans (guitar/keyboards), Bill Cunningham (bass), and Gary Talley (lead guitar). The bands sound mixed elements of Soul music and Pop, and sometimes came off with a Garage Rock sound. Signing to Bell Records the band cut their first single "The Letter" in 1967. The song was written by Wayne Carson Thompson and produced by Dan Penn. Fronted by teenage Alex Chilton with [...]

Alex Chilton Dies: Mourners Pervade the Blogosphere and Beyond By now, you must have heard that Alex Chilton of the Box Tops and Big Star died of an apparent heart attack on March 17. Chilton was eulogized and remembered fondly by many blogs and talking heads, but I think this wonderful eulogy from Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen was one of the most heartfelt and complete tributes to Chilton: [...]

A couple of days ago, on St Patrick's Day, Power Pop legend Alex Chilton suffered a heart attack and died in New Orleans, Louisiana at age 59. I don't think a lot of you who read this blog are old enough to even begin to think about the thinning of the ranks that goes on once you start talking 50 years old and up. My own father was dead at 54. I don't have any health problems or family history that leads me to believe that I'm going anywhere anytime soon, but stories like these give you pause just the [...]
