Released January 13, 2009 The Boxer Rebellion was a violent uprising against foreign and Christian imperialism in China. The ruling Qing Dynasty tried to use their supernatural powers to expel the foreigners out of China. This eventually ended with the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Chinese Republic. Why the history lesson? Because the band, The Boxer Rebellion, has about as much in common with violent rebellion as white bread has to dark pumpernickel. The Boxer Rebellion started life in 2000 when lead singer, Nathan [...]

The Boxer Rebellion , besides being a particularly fascinating piece of history, also makes pretty good music. It's nothing groundbreaking or earth-shattering, but it's comfortable post-punk in the same vein as Interpol or Editors with a little more swirly guitar parts and a little more Keane sounding vocals. It's a bit of a twist on an old formula, but The Boxer Rebellion sets out to prove it still holds true. And while it may not win them awards, it's good enough to reel in listeners. [...]

We've had quite a busy week here at TGTF, lining up some great things we'll be covering later this year. In the mean time whilst I've been all busy and stuff, it seems it's all been kicking off in the music industry. First up, The Boxer Rebellion (one of those band names you know, but can't pop your finger on any of their tunes, and pictured top) have suprisingly had their second album spring high up the iTunes chart, catching everyone by suprise it seems. Having been signed by Alan [...]
... while remaining unsigned! The NME says they were once signed to Alan McGee's label Poptones, but are now free agents. And apparently, as free agents, they have managed to outsell a pretty large group of relatively well-known artists, like MGMT and Kings of Leon. I think this is really cool. It sort of reminds me of an argument I got into a couple days ago about whether modern technology is good for music - or is it the case that we should all go back to living in 1972? And [...]

In history, the Boxer Rebellion was a violent movement in China led by the "Boxers United in Righteousness." The group was rebelling against expansion, evangelism and cosmopolitanism in the face of the country's financial crisis and recent natural disasters. Jump ahead a little over a century later, and a new Boxer Rebellion enters. This time the Boxers hail from the United Kingdom, are united in making amazing music and the only reason you'd think they're violent is that they produce killer track after killer track on their new release Union. [...]

Winston's Zen discovers new artists.... I came across The Boxer Rebellion when they asked me to add them on MySpace a couple of weeks ago (you can find my space here , by the way). Now normally I'd ignore the invite and kid myself into believing I'll come back and check the band out later, but for some reason I was drawn to The Boxer Rebellion's unusual moniker and I delved right on in. And I'm pleased I did. What I found was a MySpace [...]

Das Imagine-Festival bringt heute und morgen in Basel Indie-Perlen aus dem Ausland und der Schweiz auf die Bühne. Hingehen! (more...)

Formed in London in 2001 by a chance meeting of its founding band members, The Boxer Rebellion grouped together to make music, in their own style, epic and escapist. Their first album was released in 2005, and the band also toured extensively throughout Europe. I first heard them on the excellent series Long Way Down (starring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman) on a soundtrack handpicked and on Peter Gabriel's "world music" label, Real World Records. Their latest single (at the time), Broken Glass, was used as the opening music to each episode, and along with the rest of the soundtrack, [...]
