I'm so glad when bands I've interviewed get more exposure. Especially The Boxer Rebellion because not only are these guys a kick-ass band but they're also genuinely great guys. TBR are appearing on the soundtrack for the Drew Barrymore film Going The Distance which looks like it'll be another soundtrack that indie-kids will have on their shelves. Other bands on the OST include Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Passion Pit, Band of Skulls, Cat Power and more. What's even cooler is that the guys are name checked in the [...]

Remember the first time you saw "Garden State" and the soundtrack blew your mind? Well, the new Drew Barrymore/Justin Long film "Going The Distance" may have the first soundtrack to come close, both in quality and spirit. It has tracks from Cat Power, Band of Skulls, Passion Pit, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (on the CD and digital deluxe version), and Eels. The band most prominently featured in the film is UK band The Boxer Rebellion. With three songs on the soundtrack [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Movies Big Hassle New tracks from the Boxer Rebellion and the Airborne Toxic Event are among the 16 songs anchoring the new Drew Barrymore and Justin Long film, ' Going the Distance .' For the Boxer Rebellion, the band contributes the original song 'If You Run,' as well as 'Spitting Fire' and 'Evacuate,' both plucked from their 2009 release 'Union.' But maybe [...]
London-based alt-rockers The Boxer Rebellion made history last year as their digital-only album Union - named 2009's 'Alternative Album of the Year" by iTunes - became the first album f rom an unsigned band to crack Billboard's Top 100 albums without the benefit of a physical release. Finally arriving August 24 on CD , Union wears it's influences on its sepia shaded sleeve but the album has both the stark melodic chops and visionary scope to allow us to revel in the grandiosity of [...]

Can't remember if it was Morrissey or Noel Gallagher (or someone similar with a poor track record in spotting new talent) who said that the Boxer Rebellion would be ones to watch. This generally reads that they are to be avoided like the plague but perhaps on the evidence of this song there is something special going on. And even then things start out so generic to the point of blandness, the song doesn't reach old skool Radiohead neck hairs on end until well into its second minute. By then however, anything goes and 'Flashing Red Light Means Go' reaches [...]

Austin - It's been a week since we've all returned from our journey to Austin. With some time to reflect, here are our final thoughts. Best Show Gary - Fanfarlo at Galaxy Room, March 18; crowd response AND the general way it was carried were both an experience. Derek - The Temper Trap Allison - We Were Promised Jetpacks; basically the entire Showcasing Scotland show on Wednesday Ricky - Marina and the Diamonds..great energy and good crowd response. [...]

My assignments for SPIN.com on the final day of SXSW took me all over the map — not just the Austin street map, but the stylistic map. With temperatures around 40 and an uppity north wind chafing anything that wasn't covered, it was a tough day for outdoor shows. Yes, I was the guy wearing the promo beer cozies as gloves: ☛ The Boxer Rebellion breathed fresh life into Brit-rock. ☛ Karen Elson , the wife of the White Stripes' Jack White, played a chilly outdoors [...]

Maybe it had something to do with Hole's performance on Friday, but a thunderstorm moved through Austin in the early hours of Saturday morning, sending temperatures plummeting and kicking up a nasty north wind that had more bite than any guitarist I saw all week. SXSW attendees on Saturday scrambled for their winter clothes, if they brought any, and scrambled to buy some if they didn't. The always-hot Rachael Ray party highlighted the afternoon; newly reconfigured L.A. quartet the Like [pictured above] played Stubb's; and photographer Scott Dudelson sent these photographs. [...]

Austin - Don't mind me if I get a little too real here for a sec, but a couple days into SXSW I developed a pretty nasty cold. I spent all day Friday in the hotel room trying to recuperate just so that I could go out that night to see The Boxer Rebellion. They were basically the main reason I wanted to come along for the ride, as they released one of my favorite albums of last year. I found myself surrounded by a fairly unfavorable crowd at this show, as Sum 41 (?!?!?) were set to [...]

In our opinion, these [...]

When we first interviewed The Boxer Rebellion back in March of 2009, we found a band that was humble, yet clearly on the verge of greatness. The release of their second album, Union put them on the top of the iTunes alternative charts in the U.S. and U.K. despite not being signed to a record label. Since then, the momentum has continued to grow and with their appearance at this years South By Southwest, they are being touted as the "band to watch" by many of the major music magazines. Comparisons to early U2 and The [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News It's hard to imagine that there's anything else besides BBQ, beer and bands in Austin during SXSW , but Dangerbird Records and the Pablove Foundation are sponsoring an event -- a benefit, actually -- that involves a bit more physical activity than just raising hand to mouth. Specifically, it involves bicycling around Austin during the day on March 20, the final stretch of SXSW, while raising money to help improve the lives of children with cancer. Participants can choose between a 30-mile or a [...]

We'll be previewing two letters per day, which'll take us right up to SXSW Music Week. Then we'll give you our picks for the [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , New Music , Exclusive Even though major labels aren't the all-powerful keys to success they once were, it's still a rare occurrence than an unsigned band -- as in, not even on an indie label -- gets much recognition. With that in mind, it's all the more impressive that London-based quartet the Boxer Rebellion managed to see their second album, 'Union,' be named iTunes' best alternative album of 2009. "It was a [...]
