He may be remembered for his children's books nowadays more than for his songwriting, but group of at least 15 of today's musical artists has come together to ensure that we acknowledge Shel Silverstein 's notable songwriting résumé. As reported by TwentyFourBit , a tribute album called Twistable, Turnable Man will hit shelves June 8th via Sugar Hill Records . Contributing Silverstein covers for the collection are My Morning Jacket (which opens and closes the album), Andrew Bird, Dr. Dog, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine, and Lucinda Williams. As if that wasn't cool enough [...]

"A Boy Named Sue" alone would be enough to justify a Shel Silverstein tribute album in my book, but given the fact that he also wrote dozens of wonderful songs, including Loretta Lynn hit "One's on the Way," soundtracks to both the Dustin Hoffman film Who I Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me? and Ned Kelly , "Marie Laveau" , and loads more, makes this project long overdue, I'd say. Sugar Hill Records are gearing up to release Twistable Turnable Man [...]

John Prine recorded "Christmas In Prison" for his third album, in 1973, two years after he recorded "Paradise." In the interest of actually getting something posted today (sorry for the slack over the weekend) , I won't tell you all about each individual track, but there's a decent amount of variety here, so be sure to get 'em all. As always, I recommend the zipfile. Also, there are a lot of covers on YouTube. ( 1 2 3 4 5 should get you started.) [...]

Billy Bob and crew get ready to take on the winter.
As Rocks Off has noted in our periodic Mail Call entries, even though the tide of promo CDs has been greatly reduced by the digital revolution - Rocks Off can count on one finger (the middle one) the... Continue reading "Listening Room: What's Been Tickling Our Earholes Lately" >

CAUGHT ON VIDEO: Egotistical Maniac and Actor Billy-Bob Thornton does his best on film to derail an interview with Q-TV 's Jian Ghomeshi . What riled Thorton? In his intro to the piece, Ghomeshi mentioned the fact that he has a band in studio whose drummer Billy Bob Thornton whose first love is really music. (Doesn't sound to scandalous, right? Billy Bob wants everyone to love him for his music and to forget about hist acting past.) The problem - the only reason anybody [...]

A few days ago, we told you about Billy Bob Thornton's idiotic interview on the Canadian QTV show. Since that debacle, Thornton's band, The Boxmasters, have experienced the fallout of that performance. They received a unanimous BOO-ing from the Canadian audience at the show following the interview, and have since pulled out of the Willie Nelson tour "due to one band member and several of the crew having the flu," as their official website announced. [...]
I am seriously going to see if I can get an interview for my Like Sugar PopCast "show". I will focus only on things that have nothing to with music or acting. Next, I will seek out Joaquin Pheonix and finally, Elvis. For real entertainment, check out his website. It's awful! Or is it a joke? See for yourself: http://www.billybobthornton.ne t/
D. Ricky Rodriguez Just days after he and his "cosmic cowboy" outfit The Boxmasters were booed off stage in Toronto following an awkward Canadian radio interview in which he--among other strange and... MUSIC NEWS - If you haven't heard it yet, BILLY BOB THORTON had "run in" with an interviewer on a recent Canadian radio appearance this week (see below). During the segment he snapped at the host of CBC's "Q", Jian Ghomeshi, who disregarded the interview agreement and questioned Thornton's music motives and discussed some off-limits topics. Mr Thornton got "touchy" about being called an actor, and gave "I don't know, maybe" and "I don't know what you're talking about" to most every question. He also compared his Canadian fans to mashed potatoes with no gravy, and even though Thornton later explained that he [...]

Billy Bob Thornton gave a Joaquin Phoenix -like interview to Canadian DJ Jian Ghomeshi , while trying to promote his band, The Boxmasters . It was said that the host was "instructed not to talk about" Billy Bob's acting endeavors. Given that no one would've known who the band was, I would think it reasonable to preface his interview with the fact that he's an Oscar winning actor. Check out the full interview: [...]

When you hear the name "Billy Bob Thornton," the first thing you think about is the silver screen. Ask any person on the street who Billy Bob Thornton is and they'll tell you… "He's an actor." They'll probably even tell you that he's a "fine" actor… which he is. Well, for a very small percentage of people in this world (like me), Billy Bob Thornton is also a musician. Whether he's a good one or not doesn't matter… because after an interview like this, I simply don't care anymore. Go ahead and hit "play" and take a gander [...]
Let me catch you up to speed here: Internationally famous actor, screenwriter and director Billy Bob Thornton has a mod/Americana-style band called The Boxmasters. Oops. I mentioned that he's involv... Continue reading "Awk-Master: Musician Billy Bob Thornton Gets Weird on the Radio" >

From the Superficial... Reminds me a little of... Keep going, Billy Bob. You've got a little work to do. (I also enjoy the fact that he doesn't even perform with his band at the end of the interview.) Check out Billy Bob's The Boxmasters on MySpace , if you dare. MP3: Bob Dylan-Shooting Star [ysi] [...]
Dear Billy Bob Thornton, Like 99.96% of America, I best know you as a slightly above average actor and former husband of Angelina Jolie - not as a member of the musical outfit The Boxmasters . And this is coming from someone who probably spends over 16 hours a day dealing directly with the world of music. Now I can understand why you wouldn't want your film career to be used as a publicity tool to atract people to your music. But that doesn't mean, nor gives you the right to completely disown your career [...]

There's this Los Angeles band called the Boxmasters . Heard of 'em? They play country-pop (or "Modbilly" as they like to call it) in the vein of the Byrds, Muswell Hillbillies , and Mike Nesmith. Ring any bells? They put out three albums in the past year! Still never heard of them? Oh, well, their singer and sometime drummer is actor/screenwriter/director Billy Bob Thornton . Now let's say you're a journalist. What are you gonna ask about: the music of yet another country-pop band or the fact that your [...]
Billy Bob Thornton (actor) joined the ranks of celebrities giving bizarre interviews when he appeared on Canadian public broadcast earlier today with his band the Boxmasters. The Boxmasters, whom Thornton (actor) drums for in addition to composing much of the music, are currently on tour with Willie Nelson...who by the way would never behave like this in an interview or any other situation for that matter. As the host attempts to celebrate the Boxmasters' unique blend of British Invasion and hillbilly music, Thornton (actor) goes all five year old [...]
I saw ZZ Top and Billy Bob Thornton's band The Boxmasters at Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth, Texas. I left the concert blown away by Billy Gibbons and company but was whether underwhelmed by the Boxmasters. Well, Billy Bob Thorton must not have had his morning cup of joe and decided to take out his frustrations on the interviewer. I think the interviewer did a great job in handling the brat and Billy Bob's pompous attitude makes me never want to support the jerk off again... DOUCHE! NOTE: The video starts to pick up around [...]
submitted by Deena WTF, now Billy Bob Thornton has his own band? And they're coming to Pittsburgh on August 24? I'm always the last to know these things. Their myspace page contains a long list of influences, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and The Animals as well as Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Roy Acuff, and Hank Williams. "The Boxmasters are fashioned after a 1960's-era mod band whose upbeat rhythms and infectious arrangements contrast sardonically with the very dark themes they explore lyrically." Well, I [...]
