We don't know where the Isle of Lewis is -- nor do we have a clue about The Outer Hebrides, the area of Scotland where Lewis is located. We promise to check an atlas at some point. But we do know that Lewis is also the far-flung home to Colin MacLeod, aka The Boy Who Trapped the Sun , a 25-year-old singer/songwriter who is releasing his soft-spoken, sumptuous debut album Fireplace July 15 (U.K. only for now). The spacious, raw seaside surroundings permeate MacLeod's music, a brisk, inviting jangle of Anglo folk/rock that sits easily between the [...]

If you could see the amount of paper screwed up on my desk you would realise the pain that has gone into choosing my personal top 20 albums of the year. Some of them have featured on the site but for some reason I seem to have overlooked reviewing others. I have found 2010 to be a year of musical discovery as my love of Americana has grown. I hope that you enjoy and maybe discover some artists you might not of heard of. After all, that's the point of me writing the damn thing! #20 The Boy [...]

Now, I'm sure that any Fyfe Dangerfield or Guillemots fans out there will concur that any gig of theirs probably isn't going to be particularly raucous – hyped, yes. Slightly eccentric, perhaps. But not raucous. Known for being a tad 'off the wall', Guillemots obviously do have their raucous moments, but generally, theirs are albums that you could happily fall asleep to (in a good way, not like, 'cause you're bored), so when their frontman steps out on tour alone, you could bet your last rolo that he's gonna pick someone to warm up his audiences who's got almost as [...]
Having played one of the shows of the year last week in Brooklyn with Teenage Fanclub, Belle and Sebastian head to LA and then onto Mexico where they will play three gigs with The Vaselines. Radio 12s Vic Galloway has more on that and a listing of all the other Scottish gigs abroad this week. [...]
Radio Scotland and Radio 1 legend Vic Galloway has more on the brilliant new Scottish band 'Hey Enemy' and why they are the band to see this week in Europe. Vic also has the only listing of every Scottish band on tour outside the UK this week. Check out Scotland on Tour for more shows. [...]
Vic is back from his jollies and will return to Radio Scotland tonight with Kid Canaveral live. Bands on tour this week include Hey Enemy, Teenage Fanclub and The Cinematics but Vic has more on Glasgow's Sparrow and the Workshop who will join Biffy Clyro, The View, and Broken Records in Ireland for Arthur's Day. [...]
Welcome to another day of Video Fight Club where two videos battle it out to try and achieve victory and sit upon the throne of Video of the Day. The Boy Who Trapped The Sun walked away as our champion yesterday and his prize is a day as the MUZU.TV Video Of The Day for his new single 'Dreaming Like A Fool . On the Video Fight Club today we have a big treat for all you dance lovers out there. In the left corner of the battle ring is we [...]

Having cut his teeth with a teenage agit-punk band on the Isle of Lewis, (it's in the Outer Hebrides), Colin Macleod eventually decided to go it alone under the rather grand moniker of The Boy Who Trapped The Sun . This decision was apparently the result of a brush with Dylan's Masters of War but Fireplace's content suggests that Macleod is more than familiar with Blood on The Tracks. In fact the album's central theme of the disintegration of relationships is so strong that it's got a one track mind. As you might expect it's a thoroughfare that is [...]

we're only afraid of NYC Today sees the release of their third EP, 'zero.three', by the Glasgow trio, it could quite possibly be the greatest thing to have been released in 2010. Yes, it's that good. I guess you already know that myself and Jim 'Ayetunes' love this band, if you don't trust us, then trust the lovely Lauren Laverne who also shares our passion. Download yourself a free cope of the EP over on their Bandcamp page, then once you realise how right I am, make sure you come along and catch their headlining set [...]

The Boy Who Trapped The Sun - Fireplace 9/10 Colin MacLeod a.k.a. The Boy Who Trapped The Sun has been knocking at my posting door for the last year or so. To be honest I was not totally convinced about it at first, however Fireplace has won me over. Dropping July 12th on Geffen Records, I'm pretty sure it will you as well. There is a slightly ironic story behind my love of the album, [...]

I suppose that if we are talking about Scottish gigs this week, I really do have to mention T in the Park, or Nedstock as my far-funnier-than-I friend refers to it over at the Vinyl Villain . I've actually only been once myself, back in 1996 I think it was, when Radiohead and Pulp headlined the Saturday and Sunday spots respectively. The thing is, I looked it up on Wikipedia and it seems that was indeed 1996, but then, it says Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds were also on the bill and although I cannot for [...]

Well, I am now eight working days away from shiftless unemployment becoming a wildly successful entrepreneur, and as mental a move as this might be I am very, very excited to get going. I am an obssessive type, as you probably know by now, and I need projects to get just a little bit too focussed on, so this should be perfect. Anyhow, the inital lineup for the Edge Festival has been announced. So far so moderately interesting, with bands like Eels, The Low Anthem, Broken Records and Beirut on the bill. These things [...]

The Scottish music scene is undeniably city-centric. If a band isn't doing the rounds of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee or Inverness then, for many people, they might as well not exist. Yet that would mean missing out on a massive amount of talent, and that talent tends to avoid the derivative, scenestery, cliché-addled sound which often comes from being part of a much wider network. It also helps that these music-making islanders can take inspiration from the most beautiful scenery Scotland has to offer and bring those pure thoughts with them if they decide to head [...]
It's not often that I post about artists on major labels, it's something that I don't feel all that comfortable with to be honest. However in The Boy Who Trapped The Sun's (aka Colin Macleod ) case I am more than happy to make exceptions. It was the session that he recorded for Vic Galloway last year that first brought him to my attention, basically it's one man and a guitar, but then again it's so much more than that. In this day and age it takes a lot for a songwriter to stand out from the [...]

For all of you who weren't paying attention last week, there will be no Friday Freebies on Peenko today. I'm away on holiday (that feels quite a stupid thing to be writing as at the moment I'm sitting on the sofa enjoying a beer). Jim from Aye Tunes has very kindly offered to do the honours for this week, so head on over to his blog where he will be doing the honours for this week. In case things go tits up and there's f'all freebies this week, I've made you all a wee playlist of Scottish bands [...]

- "What would you say to a 15-minute interview for a feature I'm doing?" - "Of course, would it be cool to contact my regional press about it?" - "The phrase 'long way for a short cut' comes to mind" - "I know....it's a pile of pish....(is there such a thing as a pile of pish?!) but they make me do it" [...]

Hell yeh! This Wednesday (Jan 13th) we're celebrating our second Birthday with a big old Birthday bash at London's Old Queens Head, featuring a whole host of super folk including one of our favourite bands of the moment, exlovers . exlovers With records out through the very cool Young And Lost Club and Chess Club last year, the guys have been getting rave reviews and selling out shows all over the place. They also released one of the most [...]

On January 13th we're returning to the Old Queens Head to celebrate our second birthday. It's been an emotional ride kids, and we're so incredibly happy to still be at the place where we started putting on our special brand of eclectic, star-studded, crazy, wine-injected, ramshackle events. Just so you know, January 13th is going to continue in this vain. We don't care that it's January and you're all obsessed with detoxing. I mean, if you really want to make this month even more depressing then good luck, but what you really need in January is a damn [...]
