Brain Royal Mega iTunes: Brain - Single - Black Milk 73 Vinyl: http://blackmilk.biz/store/ It's a pretty crazy feeling when you're going about your regular, every day routine in the studio and all of sudden you get a phone call that Jack White wants to work with you. The email to my manager came from Jack White himself. My first reaction was one of shock that an artist like him, who most people would categorize as a rock star, would want to [...]

Jack White 's Third Man Records has released efforts from an assortment of acts during its tenure, from Seasick Steve to Stephen Colbert and even an auctioneer . Now, though, the Nashville, TN label tackles its first hip-hop release with a single from Detroit-based rapper/producer Black Milk . Recorded back in April, the two-track effort features White strumming guitar on the A-side "Brain" and heading behind the kit on the B-side "Royal Mega". White also co-produces both tracks. "Brains", the jazzy number in line with [...]

Brain Idea — Signals Having just recently gained an appreciation for the immaculate sounds of the Flying Nun catalog, I'm finding the kiwi-flavored rock of Brain Idea 's new Cosmos Factory EP (out on Mexican Summer ) to be nothing short of a godsend. It's not hard to hear echoes of The Clean and The Verlaines in the mostly instrumental "Signals", which bobs along on a lightweight jangle and mellowed vocal harmonies— [...]
This kind of blew my mind a little bit: "A dramatic and shocking demonstration of how your brain gets fooled to see something that is not there because of your biases, prejudices and expectations." Simon Singh uses the lure of Led Zeppelin to make the larger point about the Big Bang Theory and why people don't believe in it. Mind. Blown. Tweet

Chicago based Brain Idea's released their new 12" EP, Cosmos Factory, today via Mexican Summer. Take a look at the video for the single Oh I'm Free (Earn Your Card) below. You can pick up a copy of the album HERE . Brain Idea - "Oh I'm Free (Earn Your Card)" from Mexican Summer on Vimeo .

There's a pleasing wooziness to Londoner Warm Brains ' stuff, the vocals fighting to be heard above a syrupy sea of guitar, bass and electric. Throw in the boy's classically disillusioned tone, plus a rapid-fire beat and more than a scoop of surf rock, and it all adds up to some serious lo-fi finery. A debut album's out soon through Marshall Teller . A. Let Down by Warm Brains [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

It's kind of a quiet week around here, but there are still some good shows to check out. On Thursday in Raleigh, Whatever Brains (above) will be at Kings, and in Durham Deleted Scenes and Lonnie Walker will be at Pinhook. On Wednesday, Kolyma and Whoarfrost will be at Nightlight. On Saturday Phantom Glue and Man Will Destroy Himself will be at Dive Bar, and on Sunday Phantom Glue will be at Casbah with Hog . Also on Saturday, Small Ponds will be at Motorco with [...]

Music creation is part-process, part innate skill, and then part implementation of a well-worn set of rules. But what about band creation? Warm Brains are what happens when one band implodes (the briefly-existent Test Icicles ) and something lovely finally crawls from the wreckage. Secondary bands borne this way are sometimes (though not always - hello, Wings) more interesting than the band that spawned them. Rory of Warm Brains follows the framework set out above to create his music, and I imagine the gap between Band #1 and Band #2 [...]
"What they don't tell you in Hollywood is that the tea wound up in the harbor." -Showcase Showdown Around the turn of the century my music listening habits mainly consisted of punk music. One of my favorite acts at the time (aside from the amazing Dillinger Four ) was Boston's Showcase Showdown . Their music had everything I needed, fast sloppy chords, spit-a-second lyrics and a lead singer with a unique (read annoying?) voice. But the main reason I enjoyed them [...]

David Eagleman How do baseball players catch fly balls? Is Mel Gibson really Anti-Semitic? Are murderers culpable for their crimes? Did Pink Floyd read Carl Jung? These are some of the questions raised in Incognito : The Secret Lives of the Brain , a new book in which David Eagleman blends his expertise as a neuroscientist with his skill as a fiction writer to produce a lively primer on brain science for the layperson. Imagine a talk show hosted by Oliver Sacks and Nick Hornby (or the editors of Frontier Psychiatrist [...]

Looking at The Dream, he's a little unassuming. No washboard abs, no chiseled facial features, and a fit game that's questionable at best. He doesn't exactly look like his music sounds. But when it comes to silky, orchestrated sex epics, he's kind of in a class of his own. Of course, everyone from The Weeknd to Drake have followed his cues, both vocally and musically, and it's served them well too. What The Dream, and partner-in-crime Tricky Stewart have always had working in their favor is pure, unadulterated, and occasionally shameless pop satisfaction, to to mention a [...]
Each WFMU DJ's show has a very specific sound. I often wonder how each DJ creates this. Example: this week, Duane did a set composed mostly of soul. He used the band Odyssey from the compilation Motown's Mowest Story 1971-1973 , and included Ruth Brown and Willie Hutch. Soul sounds fresher than most "oldies" genres, and Duane's soul set particularly so: this music is not worn by decades of radio overkill. But Mr. Finewine also uses soul on Downtown Soulville, as does Small Change on Nickel [...]

The-Dream's Prince impression is getting better all the time. Actually, it's so good at this point that it verges on parody, which sort of serves The-Dream's near parodic ends as the master of contemporary sex jamz. In advance of his forthcoming The Love IV (Diary of a Madman) , The-Dream has given away two tracks nearly as good as "Yamaha," "Fast Car," and "Rockin' that Shit." First, "Body Work" features a heaving beat that bumps and grinds like R. Kelly or Ginuwine at their horniest. But "Body Work" (and, by extension, The-Dream) reaches its logical conclusion with "Fuck [...]
