The Bran Flakes are the newest addition to Illegal Art , the only record label with the balls to handle the legalities of Girl Talk and other like minded sample heavy mashup artists. They are pretty irreverent, though not in the way Girl Talk might joyfully desecrate two antithetical musics with one fell swoop. The Bran Flakes find samples that while pretty distant in origin share a similar penchant for zaniness. Zaniness is a tough thing to pull off (just ask the Flaming Lips). You either look like you're trying too hard, [...]

the bran flakes - "the girl that i used to be (feat. bomarr)" (download) From their website: " Formed in 1992 amidst tape and zine trading scenes, The Bran Flakes already have seven releases of zany mashups and poppy audio collages that are more likely to cop a riff from Evel Knievel than anything on the current radio dial. Six years since their last release, they return with the absurdly entertaining I Have Hands ." [...]

I'm a huge fan of the Goodwill Dollar LP bin. You've seen those poor, deserted records - children's learning LP's, religious sermons and presidential speeches, hypnotism records to help you stop doing whatever it is you should stop doing. These records are more expensive at used record stores and usually have a post-it on them that says "hey djs" or "great for sampling." They are fun for a listen or two or maybe intros or transitions on your cool new mix tape. But who really knows what to do with them once you buy them? The Bran Flakes [...]

Speaking of Otis Fodder , his wacky electro sound collage/mashup crew The Bran Flakes have a new album, their first in 6 years. It may be their best one yet. As usual, they've raided the thrift shops of ancient unwanted records - children's music, religious, easy-listening, even Dolly Parton - and made brief, up-beat tunes out of 'em. This one might be the best tune on the album, sampling the kiddie classic "Free To Be You And Me" (and it's a happy sequel to one of their older tunes "I Don't [...]

The Bran Flakes are back! Six years since their last full release, Otis Fodder and Mildred Pitt return with the thrillingly fun I Have Hands on Illegal Art. Formed in 1992 amidst tape and zine trading scenes, The Bran Flakes have already put out seven releases of zany mashups and poppy audio collages that are more likely to cop a riff from Evel Knievel than anything on the current radio dial. Call them the cover boys of Cool and Strange Music or simply misfits with giant paper-mâché heads these boys have amassed a cult following for [...]
I've been having serious motivation issues lately. Fortunately, "Stumble Out Of Bed" has crept into my brain to the point where all I need to do is chant "working working working working" over and over again and voila, it's as...

Song The Bran Flakes ~ " I Have a Friend " myspace views: 3,596 mp3 download Here's a quarky and intriguing track. The Bran Flakes are North American texturized sound collage-ers and they deliver a sound that reminds me of Saturday Morning cartoons meets " Frontier Psychiatrist ". Due to the sampling nature of their style, The Bran Flakes haven't really been able to legitimately release anything until earlier [...]
Sample-happy producers the Bran Flakes released their sixth full-length yesterday. From the label site: Formed in 1992 amidst tape and zine trading scenes, The Bran Flakes already have seven releas... Continue reading "The Download: New Bran Flakes MP3s" >

MP3 - " What It's All About " - The Bran Flakes You know how, when you're a kid, certain forms of entertainment seem totally normal, but when you're an adult they seem really odd. That was how I felt watching Yellow Submarine as an adult, and that is how I feel about The Bran Flakes . The music is offbeat, but I am sure kids will go crazy for it. In fact, the Bran Flakes are the perfect meeting of my inner child and my [...]

Save-the-planet fanatics owe them a debt of gratitude for their imaginative recycling of petroleum-based audio storage media." - Irwin Chusid, WFMU The Bran Flakes are back! For the Monday-loathers among you, here's this, um, interesting reworking of Dolly Parton's "9 to 5." I'm still trying to process this one, but it feels appropriate to the day, at least. The Bran Flakes "Stumble Out Of Bed" (mp3)...

MP3 - " Stumble Out Of Bed " - The Bran Flakes You know about Illegal Art from their Girl Talk releases, but the label puts out a lot of other great records as well. Illegal Art releases challenge copyright law while also celebrating sampling as a viable creative art form. Their latest release in the Illegal Art catalog is I Have Hands from The Bran Flakes , out next week and built 100% on samples. The Bran Flakes, however, [...]

Το καταπληκτικό, σχεδόν συγκινητικό στην αφέλειά του, I Have A Friend , είναι το 29ο track του άλμπουμ! Με συγκρίσεις τόσο προς τους Avalanches όσο και τους Residents [βλ. φωτό] ίσως [...]
