Listening to the The Joy Formidable is like taking a trip back to the early to mid-'90s when bands like The Breeders were suddenly "big." Up and down tempos climax with bombastic sonic blasts. The Breeders' Kim Deal lifted the template from her former band the Pixies , which influenced scores of bands that decade (most notably Nirvana ). Wales-based Joy Formidable takes the Breeders template and spiffs it up on The Big Roar (out in the U.S. on Tuesday). [...]

…the best music mixes cover a range of styles and emotions so we kept that in mind while compiling this Valentine's Day playlist. Like relationships, love songs come in many shapes and sizes, so we picked a cross-section of local bands, from '70s bluegrass act The Hotmud Family to the art-damaged electro-pop of Grizzzzy Bear, [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Ed's Redeeming Qualities This weekend, Breeders violinist Carrie Bradley will go back to her roots -- the Boston alternative rock scene of the late '80s. Bradley's first band, the quirky folk-rock act Ed's Redeeming Qualities , retired in 1997 but is reuniting and returning to Boston for a one-off show at TT the Bear's club on Saturday, Jan.22. The event celebrates the [...]

Can it really be true, as Wikipedia claims, that a very early version of The Breeders opened for Steppenwolf in 1977? What was largely seen in 1988 as a kind of supergroup with a Pixie, a Pixie's twin, a Throwing Muse and one of The Perfect Disaster wasn't quite a continuation of the Deal twins' early group; the only revival was of the name. But it's still quite a thought. Sadly, it doesn't look like the band's date at the Bronze has survived the attentions of Fox solicitors, so let's leap in with Divine Hammer and [...]

DOWNLOAD: Dirty Dishes - "Stolen Apples" DOWNLOAD: Dirty Dishes - "Deer in Headlights" Dirty Dishes formed in 2009 and have been described as striking " a delicate balance between all out psychedelic and easily accessible grungy indie-rock. The band weaves in and out of low-end saturated guitar and bass riffs and super tight, staccato rhythms. (Boston Band Crush)" Good points of comparison would be The Breeders or Kim Deal's songs with The Pixies. Dirty Dishes began 2010 by playing a sold out [...]

Filed under: News Are you already tired of politics this season? Well, we have a campaign that rock fans can get behind without any headaches. Taking to the increasingly popular online funding model, Tim Midgett of Silkworm has started a drive to pay off the mortgage for Steve Albini 's legendary Electrical Audio studio and finally get the famed technician full ownership of the property. Albini, a Chicago-based engineer and the unofficial leader of Shellac , has manned the boards and worked microphone magic [...]

Despite the fact that we called Plunder, Beg, and Curse one of the top ten albums of 2008 because it proved that "beards and southern rock are just barely getting started with their comebacks," the album had dismal sales (we were among multiple entities who wrote high praises of the album), and they lost their label, bassist, and drummer. Woah. Some blow. Founding members Jesse Coppenbarger and Sean Kirkpatrick eventually found themselves down to two, and tasked themselves with recording some new [...]
Every person I showed this video to said it was the story of their life. Yesterday's reference to The Breeders made me spin 'Last Splash' again and this song is a perfect match. TRACKS: The Breeders - Do You Love Me Now...?
