Valley Girl Science Corner by Molly Lambert Hey they found a new planet . It's 20 light years away. Scientists are way stoked. The British scientist was all "20 light years? We can go there!" Oh and guess what else? There are some monkeys that live in caves and make daggers out of stone. I am so for real. And guess what else about monkeys? Male chimps prefer older lady chimp lovers. It's because [...]
I finally took the time to check up on the current Breeders situation with few results. I had heard rumors of a new record to follow up 2002's very underrated Title TK , but just now bothered to find out what was going on. The closest I could come was 2 quick mentions from September of last year. One was at NME and one at Aversion . Who knows, it was 9 years between Last Splash and Title TK . At this point the news is...Steve Albini producing (hot), and in the studio [...]
Liz Phair "Nashville" - Maybe I've been reading the wrong writers or speaking to the wrong people since the early 90s, but it seems that almost no one ever mentions that the guitar parts on Liz Phair's first two albums are more often than not as poetic as her words. The tone in "Nashville" is drowsy and nearly serene, but its churning rhythm is nervous and unsteady in a way particular to feeling terrified about losing something in which you've invested too much. It's an interesting subtext for a song that depicts a relationship in its [...]
Nobody's posted it yet, so here: The Breeders took pop, mixed it with grunge, an infectious hook, distortion, feedback and vocal harmonizing and what resulted was, in my opinion, the quintessential '90s song. The first single off 1993's Last Splash , I was what? 7 years old when this album was released but I remember dancing my little butt off to whenever my uncle played this on his cassette player. Oh man, that sexy, slithering hook! The Breeders - Cannonball
It wasn't snowy new year parade, in fact there was a great sunny weather out here. I wanted to shout all of you happy new year even if it's too late. I hope we'll listen too many great bands, great albums in the new year. Now which albums i'm looking forward this month to write about: Vietnam - Vietnam Jan 23 The Earlies - The Enemy Chorus Jan 23 OF MONTREAL - Hissing Fauna, Are You The
Hope everyone had a safe NYE! Here are some tracks appropriate for today. Regular posts should return tomorrow... Kate Havnevik - New Day The Breeders - New Year Asobi Seksu - New Years Ursula 1000 - Here Comes Tomorrow [...]

The Breeders ~ Happiness is a Warm Gun "She found the first body in a stairwell."

Today’s selection comes with serious theme. Regular visitors may have noticed some negative sentiment toward Lark in yesterday’s conversation. This was due, certainly from our part, to an email received from Universal Music Publishing requesting the removal of the Lark tracks we had made available on the site. No wind-bag lawyers letter ala The Raconteurs, however the message was essentially the same. I won’t waste your time expanding on this particular issue, our acquaintance with the band and our part, if only small, in adding to the groundswell of support for Lark over the [...]
The Shankill Butchers ride tonight You better shut your windows tight They're sharpening their cleavers and their knives And taking all their whiskey by the pint. They used to be just like me and you. They used to be sweet little boys But something went horribly askew Now killing is their only source of joy. The Shankill Butchers on the rise. They're waiting 'til the dead of the night They're picking at their fingers with their knives, And wiping off their cleavers on their thighs. [...]

I went to the opening of the Denver Art Museum ’s new Frederic C. Hamilton Building over the weekend. It’s this crazy new titanium plated boat-triangle shaped thing designed by this guy Libeskind , who’s doing the new Freedom Tower in Manhattan (which will soon be the tallest building in the world only because it has a giant pole sticking out of the top of it. That’s totally cheap). The new building looks pretty baddass, especially when walking around inside of it. It’s suppose to be one of the stranger buildings in America now, [...]

In an effort to rebalance genres, I thought I would dedicate my two week-end posts to women bands. So here's The Breeders (well, 75% women) with lead singer "you know who" doing their smashing hit which pissed "you know who" and probably delayed "you know who" reunion by many years. But thank god everything ended well, so here's why the post :). Mp3: Cannonball (Live in Canada 2002) Buy: Last Splash

I used to watch a lot of TV as a kid. Like A LOT. Naturally, as I got older there was less time for boob-tubing and the television landscape is quite different now with the advent of TV-on-DVD and cable shows that run on their own schedules, but I still get a bit of a tingle when September comes and with it, the new (network) television season. I'm of the opinion that despite the amount of utter dreck on the air, that we're still in the middle of something of a television renaissance right now. I [...]

Well I've decided to be deliciously random today. Random Facts About This Side of the Mouth 1. My favorite color is green. 2. Brad is my good friend. 3. I am on my third iPod. 4. I like to read. 5. I'm really not wearing any pants right now. Random Facts About the Other Side of the Mouth 1. His shoes kind of all look the same. [...]
The Breeders vielä kasassa? Ilmeisesti, sillä rumpali Jose Medeles kirjoittaa blogissaan bändin astuvan studioon tässä kuussa studioon. Myös Steve Albini vaikuttaa olevan kuvioissa mukana. Tagit: The Breeders

They don't exactly knock albums out like they're sitting on the production line at the canning factory, so it's always exciting to hear news of The Breeders working on a new album . With Steve Albini doing the production, too. They're spending the month recording, apparently. We're still some distance away from a release date. music steve albini the breeders
so in addition to foo fighters awesomeness the other night, there was also frank black . i wish i was cooler and could impress with my knowledge of the songs he played, but alas, i cannot. at least, however, i can say that i knew it when he played "where is my mind", the pixies song i posted the other day . it sounded good, but i have to say i missed kim deal's part (woooo ooooo). anyway, since i don't know much else about him, i'll have to go off on [...]

Today’s theme is a simple tribute to the songwriting talents of the late John Lennon, the late George Harrison, and the lately embarrassing Sir Paul McCartney. (Sorry, Ringo.) Nick Cave â€" Here Comes the Sun (from the I Am Sam OST [International Version] , 2001) â€" From “Release the Bats†to a folk ballad duet with fellow Aussie Kylie Minogue (“Where the Wild Roses Growâ€) to this wearily beautiful rendition of the Fab Four’s ode to solar-powered optimism â€" a very interesting fellow, this Mr. Cave is. [...]

This is a free crash course in music education from the last 40 years, courtesy of Gregg Gillis, aka Girl Talk . It goes by really, really fast. My blogger pal Bruce (of Some Velvet Blog hotness fame) came up with an idea to do a massive joint post of all the songs from the ADD-inducing, mile-a-minute mashup disc Night Ripper ( previous post ), which uses over a hundred original songs to make the 42 minutes of party goodness on this album. We both [...]
