Once again, the Calgary Sled Island music festival caught me off guard and opened my eyes to another fantastic band. Chris and I (and Dave) were fortunate enough to see The Breeders live at Olympic Plaza, and boy was it something. The combination of dual female vocals and an awesome stage presence made for a great show; I was particularly impressed with their version of Happiness Is A Warm Gun by The Beatles which can be found here . The Breeders are an American indie/alt-rock band consisting, presently, [...]

The Breeders: Cannonball [ Purchase ] As one early commenter already has hinted at, The Breeder's "Last Splash" is one of the stand-out, must-haves in any talk of recently notable use of funky basslines. The 1993 hit has become a vestige for the alternative rock of the 90s. Josephine Wiggs' awesome bassline makes the song, without it, I am not sure it would have been that memorable.

Julie and I have been hitting Calgary's Sled Island festival pretty hard this week, and I've got some information to report. Said information will be presented in point form, as my head hurts too much to string together well-formed sentences: Final Fantasy , as mentioned in my last post, is a genius. Japandroids put on a great show Thursday night; I just wish it was longer as I'm really really digging these guys. Andrew W.K. is insane. The highlight of The Breeders [...]
I started off yesterday by catching (or I guess "attempting to catch" is more correct) Monotonix at Tubby Dog (aka the best hot dog place, this side of Japadog). It took us a little longer than expected to saunter our way down there, so unsurprisingly, the rather tiny "venue" was packed to overflowing when we arrived. One thing about hearing Monotonix while not being able to see them is that you quickly notice that they're much better performers than they are a band. Speaking to the former though, they made sure all the people stuck outside [...]

Kim Deal and The Breeders are most heavily known for their hit "Cannonball," but there's so much more to this band. Last year they released a full length album titled Mountain Battles, and now this year they're touring on a new EP Fate to Fatal. Four LP's and one EP into their career, there's plenty [...]

by charles poladian (pixies pic by renaud monfourny) The Reel goes on even though summer seems to have retreated. The rain can put me in a mood, but there is so much new music it is hard to feel blue for too long. Looking on the bright side of things, some of our favorite bands are coming back, lots of young bands are making good music, and things are looking better with each passing day. Are you ready Reel? [...]

Frank Yang Just before the start of NXNE , I was asked a few questions by The National Post for a festival preview piece along the lines of how NXNE differed from and was similar to SxSW . My answers were basically that there was no comparing the two, acronyms notwithstanding, as nothing anywhere really compares to SxSW in terms of scale and importance, but that in recent years NXNE has come a long way to being a worthy event in its own right. Friday evening, however, I [...]

Oh yea of little faith who thought the cassingle was dead, who thought it had been consigned to the dusty pages of the history books . Well you were wrong, like a Romero zombie from 'Dawn of the Dead' , it's back from the grave. Resurrected by California indie poppers Grand Lake for their new single 'Sandusky Sunset' on 500 Records the San Franciscan artist run record label . Ok they've only produced 100 copies of the cassingle but it's a start! [...]
New Mark Mallman, Pixies returning to the TC (sort of), Atmosphere announces summer tour & next week's best new releases.

When indie rock gods like the Breeders and Superchunk toss a pair of cool EPs like this on your lap it makes you wonder why more bands don't follow suit.

Patrick Watson (the man and the band) is currently riding the wave of lovely sounds that is their most recent release, Wooden Arms (check out my review here and grab an mp3). Prior to this and to his winning Canada's Polaris Prize for previous album, Close To Paradise , Watson worked, recorded and toured with the UK's The Cinematic Orchestra. Appearing on the band's fourth album, Ma Fleur , Watson contributed to four songs including opening track, "To Build A Home". This song has long (okay, two [...]
Two videos of Deerhunter performing with Kim and Kelly Deal at the Breeders-curated All Tomorrows Parties music festival

Coming up this Memorial Day weekend is the 2009 Sasquatch! Music Festival , held at The Gorge up in Washington. I've got a few friends heading up for the event but I won't be able to make it there first-hand, yet again. I opted to save myself for Phish a bit, but for the folks that are heading up to the festival this weekend, you're in for a serious entertainment treat. With some top-tier music acts headlining the festival, some amazing smaller-stage stuff like Battles and Rogue Wave, and a set of comedians bound to make [...]
