Labor Day weekend, folks. Party it up, you've earned it. Here in New York, we've recently weathered earthquakes and minor hurricanes and other inconveniences. So fire up the grill, put a cold beverage in your hand and turn up the mildly twee indie pop jams on this week's mix. Cover art photo was taken by Kate Bryant at the Friends With You inflatable sculpture park which is at the upper end of the Highline park. While Labor Day is seen as the end of summer, Summer Fridays mixes will continue to the Autumn Equinox... so you get two [...]

The latest - and last - album from Glen Campbell tops the list of new releases this week. And I'm not just saying that because he covered a Guided By Voices song...but that doesn't hurt, either. Other stuff worthy of your time includes the Brian Jonestown Massacre singles collection, as well as the new Male Bonding , Beirut and Hella . I'm also intrigued by the Cymbals Eat Guitars , Icarus Line and Tommy Keene records, but I haven't spent much time with [...]

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - The Singles Collection 1992-2011 By Kenny McMurtrie Too often these days, as more and more musical product is made available in a greater number of forms than at anytime in history, the fatuous question of “When’s the new sound coming?” (or words to that effect) gets bandied about on a regular basis. Screw the new sound; it’ll arrive in its own good time if at all but who’s to say it’ll be likeable? Better to concentrate on who is or isn’t making a go of [...]
Having listened to The Church ’s Steve Kilbey for 30 years, the prospect of seeing him live at one of Sydney’s renowned dinner/music restaurants was something not to be missed. Tucked away up a small flight of stairs, the venue is a music lover’s dream. Small and intimate, with lounges down back and candlelit tables up front, the room was filled with not only music memorabilia but also roughly 100 middle-aged rockers ready for a night of wining, dining and being entertained by 2010 Australian Aria Hall of Fame Inductee Kilbey, along with Ricky Maymi [...]

Iluminomi I was disappointed by the Who Killed Sgt Pepper? album. I understood the need for experimentation but thought that the band's overall direction was backwards. But I was clearly wrong as the new single is absolutely brilliant, re-showing all the doubters (like me) what Anton Alfred Newcombe is capable of. ‘Iluminomi’ kicks this layered pop song into overdrive, sounding compelling without erasing the strong sense of melody lurking within. To add to [...]

Originally posted: June 12/2009 Continuing with the theme of obsessive adoration, today's treat is none other than Brian Jonestown Massacre. Named in tribute to the legendary Rolling Stones guitarist and his influence in introducing Eastern culture and music into the world of Western rock and roll, the Brian Jonestown Massacre formed in San Francisco, California in 1990. Some 40 different members passed through the group's ranks over the years, but throughout their focal point remained singer/guitarist Anton Newcombe, bassist Matt Hollywood, guitarist Dean Taylor, organist Mara Keagal, accordionist Dawn Thomas, [...]

Story and photos by Matt Draper In 1983, after his fanzine and club night had culminated, a Scot named Alan McGee formed an imprint he called Creation to release records from like-minded friends. "73 in 833, a single from art-rock band The Legend! became the label’s first release after McGee secured a £1,000 loan. Though I can bet you’ve probably never heard of this particular group (they sound like the Normal meets Gang of Four), the label’s next releases proved massive and beyond anything its founder could have imagined. On a shoestring [...]

So yeah, I guess Cults have sort of "blown up" since I first blogged about them. The power of the internets to take their song "Go Outside" to be first posted on their BandCamp and then later less than a year later released by Columbia Records is really something. Since then, the track has gone [...]
