Grandmaster Flash. Definitely not a name you expect to hear in 2K9 (let alone with a song titled "Swagger,") but the pioneer is back looking to spread new messages in a new generation. When Flash spoke to TSS around this time last year , the album was supposed to be released soon there after. Well after a series of delays, you can expect The Bridge: Concept Of A Culture this coming March. Here's the first couple of leaks featuring veterans in their own right, Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes. [...]

In the first song I heard of The Bridges the vocals sounded a bit like one of my favorite bands Eisley. Which got me interested right away. While listening to the rest of their songs, the eisley comparison kinda went away. But overall the Bridges are definitely worth a listen. The Brdiges , whose members range in age from 18 to 24, consists of siblings Natalie Byrd (piano and guitar), Stacey Byrd (guitar), Isaaca Byrd (bass) and Jeremy Byrd (drums), and cousin Brittany Painter, who provides hauntingly expressive lead vocals and plays acoustic guitar. Brittany writes most of the [...]
Though the contests are still very close, we're going to call The Seeker for Pearl Jam and All Of My Love for Ween. Now that's cleaned up, we'll move on to this week's edition which looks at Burning Down The House. Talking Heads | MTV Music Remember Pop-Up Video? It appears MTVMusic.com has these up for free streaming now - awesome. I was inspired to to pick this song after seeing David Byrne's production last week in [...]

More lists! Damn I love year-end time. Today it's best new acts. That means that I was unaware of them until some time in 2008. So please don't email me to say "so and so ha s been around for 3 years, they aren't new". If they're new to me they qualify. Best New Acts : 10. The Boxing Lesson This Austin band is helping to bring [...]

Dan Auerbach is best known for being half of the Akron, OH blues-rock duo The Black Keys . The singer/guitarist, who sounds remarkably like Warren Haynes, seems to have found the two-man format a bit cumbersome as he will release his solo debut Keep It Hid on February 10. The album is said to be mixture of psychedelia, soul music and country harmonies. Auerbach has a lined up a brief 11 date cross-country club run to showcase the material - which starts a few weeks after The Black [...]

I'm not here to educate you about who The Talking Heads were. Playing from '74 to '91, David, Tina, Chris and Jerry should, along with Brian Wilson, be considered the Gods of indie rock. Nearly every indie rock band around owes the band a debt either because of their sound, their skill, their audience base, their D.I.Y. nature, or their general musical philosophy of inclusiveness. If there's no link to the song below, then look for the song in the zip file. And don't be rude: Drop me a comment and tell me your [...]

The Bridges were born July, 2002 with a disposition to blend lyric and harmony with haunting melodies and the poetry of reality. Brittany Painter lends her gifted voice, writing, and acoustic guitar to providing the basis for intriguing arrangements in an acoustic style reminiscent of the sixties and seventies. Natalie Byrd and Stacey Byrd provide the truly unique harmonies as well as playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and keyboards. Jeremy Byrd on drums and Isaaca Byrd on bass add a full and forceful edge to the acoustic foundation. The cousins hail from North Carolina and are presently based in Oxford, [...]

What's new in Baltimore? Well, for one thing The Bridge have released their sophomore album Blind Man's Hill , a more traditional follow-up of their self-titled debut. A bit more blues oriented they have dumped the beat boxing, which they still use on occasion during their live shows. Blind Man's Hill is the kind of album that will feels at home in a bar where the clientele wears checkered shirts and denim. Dave Markowtitz' sax serves as a comfy blanket across most of the tracks, and Mark Browne thros in his [...]

The Bridges make refreshingly good pop music - a rare commodity these days outside of The Rescues . The band is a family project made up of three sisters, a brother, and a cousin from Alabama. Their debut album Limits of the Sky was engineered and produced by Matthew Sweet - who will join The Bridges at Mountain Stage on November 2nd. Sweet also contributes organ and percussion to several of the album's tracks. You can read my heart in travel, isn't that how [...]
I'm going to go ahead and declare a tie from our edition two weeks ago with The Bridge and Mr. Blotto refusing to quit as the votes go higher and higher - so we'll call them both winners from when we looked at covers of Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys . Last week's however has a clear winner, no big surprise here as Jerry Garcia & David Grisman received the majority of votes when we examined covers of Sitting In Limbo . This [...]

Traffic's drummer Jim Capaldi sheds some light on the origin of the song title... [While in Morocco,] Michael J. Pollard and I would sit around writing lyrics all day, talking about Bob Dylan and The Band, thinking up ridiculous plots for the movie. Before I left Morocco, Pollard wrote in my book 'The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys.' For me, it summed him up. He had this tremendous rebel attitude. He walked around in his cowboy boots, his leather jacket. At the time he was a heavy little dude. It seemed to sum [...]

Friday's a little bit tamer than Thursday's schedule - there are eleven showcases to choose from instead of fifteen, but the festival makes up for it with the first of two official after parties at City Hall. Friday's after party is sponsored by Red Bull and features The Dynamites , and I'm pretty sure everyone's going to end up there at the end of the night. But before that, you've got your work cut out for you deciding what to see. The Cannery has a great lineup - including Kindercastle , Cortney [...]

The Bridges are a North Carolina band comprised of a set of sisters, a brother, and a cousin. Brittany Painter takes lead vocals, Natalie and Stacey Byrd handle backing vocals and guitars, Jeremy Byrd keeps time behind the drums, and Isaaca Byrd rounds out on bass. It kind of makes you wonder why they chose The Bridges rather than The Byrds. I guess that name must already be taken. Limits of the Sky is the debut album from the family quintet. Produced by Matthew Sweet, it's a tremendous collection of bright medolic [...]
PRE-ORDER: Matthew Sweet :: Sunshine Lies STREAM: Matthew Sweet :: "Daisychain" MATTHEW SWEET is gearing up to release his 10th (really?) studio album, Sunshine Lies . Sweet has teamed up with Shout! Factory to release the album. It's been a few years since we've heard from Sweet with new material. He put together a fantastic cover album with former Bangles frontwoman, Susanna Hoffs back in 2006 as well as choosing to produce albums from the [...]

Normally, Phish has no problem winning an edition of Cover Wars regardless of their performance of the song in question. But the hardcore fans of Bonerama (can I call you people Boneheads?) made their virtual voices heard and their band has walked away victorious from last week's Frankenstein Cover Wars . This week's selection was inspired by flipping through my RSS feed of shows added to bt.etree.org on Monday. I saw two sources of the Gov't Mule's show from 8-8-2008 get posted and I thought [...]
