So summer is over and we're all going through the fall-is-too-short-winter-don't -come blues. But put down that Pumpkin Spice Mocha-Latte no foam and winter sweater, we've got the remedy for you. LA based band, Fool's Gold is just what you need to shake your way into a happy fall. What started out as the side-project for Luke Top and Lewis Pesacov is now a tight knit band of five. After their self-titled debut in 2009, Fool's Gold diligently toured numerous cities and played festivals such as Glastonbury and Austin CIty Limits before releasing their sophomore LP, [...]
I bet you're sitting there in your chair, or standing if you're in one of those progressive-thinking workplaces...or a bouncy ball, thinking, "You know what? I would like a classy, relaxed evening of just pure good music. So much that I'd like to bring my friends to. The kind of evening that would leave everyone in awe of both my fine taste in music and the sheer fact we live in a great city." Well. That day is upon you, my friend! Saturday, September 17th brings Dark Dark Dark down from their homes in Minneapolis to ease you [...]
Are you familiar with "vaudeville"? According to the wonderful (and always handy) Merriam-Webster , it's a noun that describes "a light often comic theatrical piece frequently combining pantomime, dialogue, dancing, and song" or "stage entertainment consisting of various acts (as performing animals, comedians, or singers)." Most of you are familiar with this sort of entertainment - especially if you live in a city - but if not, here's your chance to experience it. This weekend (that is, September 16-18), Chicago's Eckhart Park will play host to the inaugural Brilliant Corners of Popular Amusements (BCPA), becoming "a playground [...]

BRILLIANT CORNERS Prepare yourselves, Chicagoans. Yet another first-time festival is making its way to the Windy City. The Brilliant Corners of Popular Amusement Festival will kick off three days of rock and circus performances at Eckhart Park (Chicago Avenue at Noble Street) Sept 16-18. On Friday, Sept. 16, Bill Callahan will headline the "Criss/Cross" tent with Sidi Toure, Bomba Estereo and Cave. Electronic dream poppers School of Seven Bells headline on Saturday. The fest wraps up on Sunday, Sept. 18 with revered Chicago noise rockers Shellac, A Lull, Dan Deacon [...]

A new festival? Really? Well, it is not just a music festival that will be taking place in Chicago at Eckhart Park over the weekend of September 16-18. Billed as a playground for children and adults, Brilliant Corners Of Popular Amusements will offer carnival games, rides, a farmer's market, a craft fair, and, duh, music. As far as the music goes, the lineup is pretty impressive for an inaugural event, featuring the likes of Bill Callahan, Dan Deacon, Shellac, Fool's Gold, School Of Seven Bells, CAVE, and much more. Even better is the fact that the event, which [...]
A cursory blog search has revealed that I haven't linked to today's featured song on here since November 2007. Long overdue for an encore then. From 1987, it's the Brilliant Corners with the utterly fantastic Delilah Sands . And look, there's a video! Brilliant Corners - Delilah Sands mp3

As if Sweden ever really needs new brilliant pop bands, now they've got The Pale Corners , hailing from Stockholm and making super catchy indiepop with rather lush arrangements, and wonderful breathy vocals. I was sent their song "Steve Buscemi" early this morning and I haven't been able to make myself hit stop yet, so I guess that's a pretty good indication of how great it is. I suppose a better indicator would be if I were still loving days from now, but that's hardly of any importance to me at the moment. I'm pretty sure they're still unsigned, [...]

Darling Daughter informed me yesterday that her school will shortly be holding its annual air band competition. Apparently each year this event is assigned a theme and a list of eligible songs is furnished to all the wannabee axe heroes/heroines. And the theme this year? The eighties. I just about withered and died of old age when I heard that. After recovering from my sudden and rapid decrepitude, I discovered that my street cred with Darling Daughter was increasing as I recognized and provided both artist and useless facts [...]

Some years are just better than others. Fact. Certain vintages see sweet, sweet music flowing like the finest wine known to mankind, while in others what dribbles forth is thin, pissy vinegar. This week sees our musical sommelier , Young Tim, invite us all chez Contrast Podcast to a delectable tasting of music from, about, or otherwise connected to 1986. Just to be clear, we're talking Château Lafite-Rothschild, not Black Tower. So getcher musical corkscrew out and uncork the goodness here . The winelist: [...]
"My goal would be someday to get a Leroy Neiman painting of myself, and hang it at the steakhouse I will have bought by then." -- Tom, wishing for some semi-abstract dining room decor "I don't think I've read any Mark Twain since I was in school, but I have read four Henry Rollins tour diaries since then. I've read 1,000 pages of Henry Rollins." -- Tom, getting in the van instead of boarding the raft "What's the guy doing a roast? What is he, Lisa Lampanelli? Roasting the [...]

Question, how many bands these days do you see naming obscure band from 80's as influences? Well, I don't see too many, but then again I don't get out much. The Answering Machine hailing from Manchester name a few likely candidates like the Strokes , Shout Out Louds and Radio Dept , but throw a curve ball when they site the Brilliant Corners . The Brilliant Corners were from Bristol and very overlooked band from the late 80's. They had a bit of a happy music, sad lyrics thing going on, that had elements of [...]

Been a while for one of these, huh? Work is eating up a lot of my energy right now. I've really thrown myself into the teaching in hopes of impressing the district enough to pick me up for next year. Here's an old one from the British indie days of the late '80s. 01. The Brilliant Corners - Somebody up there likes me 02. The Brilliant Corners - Teenage 03. The Brilliant Corners - Friday Saturday Sunday Monday [...]
The Brilliant Corners - Meet Me on Tuesdays The Brilliant Corners - Brian Rix The Brilliant Corners - Shangri La Almost perfect indie-pop. A bold claim, they didn't claim it though, I just did. The Brilliant Corners were formed in Bristol in 1983 by David Woodward, the late Chris Galvin and Bob Morris. The first few years they sounded like a Crampsy swampabilly band (mind you so did MBV back
