I have been a long time Ca Va Cool follower and am proud to call a few the writers friends whom I admire for their taste in music. Being an avid photographer for almost 9 years, my dream has always been to get into concert photography. So when Daniel asked me to step in for him at the NXNE, I couldn't have been more ecstatic. For Canadians, summer bodes a ton of opportunities to see many incredible musicians from coast to coast. Festivals in particular have always lured even the most docile fans with the promise of the [...]

Who : The British Columbians from guess where.... British Columbia. What : Perfect song for a friday. Dozing off at work a little bit? Imagining yourself at the bar tonight ordering your 2nd Jager shot? Here's the soundtrack for that exact moment, Hoodoo (below). While in conversation with the good kids at Vapor , they told me about this west coast 4 piece. The band was formed from a two year collaboration between Girard Knox and Dave Moran. What came next was a self-titled debut last Sept, which [...]

myspace Honestly, when I got a CD from The British Columbians , I was quite ready to put the record in the ole trash, and never think about the BC based band again. I mean, seriously, The British Columbians? That's the only name worse than The West Boys (Mike Robert's old Halifax "West" garage band) when it comes to not even trying. Anyway, here's the skinny about this quartet. It's about to be 2009, and when the ball drops, The British Columbians might just hope the year turns back to 1972. [...]

Trick question of the day: Where do you think The British Columbians are from? If you went with the obvious answer, then you were spot on. If you tried to out-think the question and guess Copenhagen, then you must be from Denmark or perhaps watch Jeopardy too much. That's right, the four piece group does in fact hail from up north in Canada, and on their self-titled debut album they bring forth some bluesy rock & roll that would make Jack White proud. It's Americana tinged heaviness that leaves little breathing room once Girard [...]

In the Leaves - The British Columbians If you haven't been an avid traveler on the Road 2 Nowhere , you likely have yet to hear about The British Columbians . They take their name from their, and my home, beautiful British Columbia (Aside: BC is beautiful, but it's not the best place on earth, no matter how much money the tourism board of BC spends on trying to convince us that it is). The 4 young Canadian men share a love of music, with far [...]

Some groups form after coming together by traveling across the borders of states, countries, and oceans. Others, however, may derive from the same town or even the same neighborhood. All of this geographical effort holds relevancy to finding one thing: seamless collaboration. Whether the core of a group meets in person because they live next door to one another or they form some long-distance relationship online, the end result for success is often the same. The method in getting there and finding the means necessary to do so is not. In their namesake alone, The British Columbians exhibit [...]

The British Columbians self-titled debut album opens with 'In the leaves', and there follows 40 minutes of agony, or near enough. Despite hailing from Canada the band possess a Deep South American rock/country sound, created by slow, grainy guitar rifts, steady drum beats and even the odd trumpet. As the album progresses I realise that the opener is probably the best song on the album, but then it is the 'best' of a very bad bunch. 'Bye bye Marie' starts with a quick-paced banjo intro and thus continues their country noise. The British Columbians sound is too [...]

The British Columbians A good friend of mine is FINALLY getting his musical offerings immortalized on a shiny round disc. Girard Knox has joined forces with Dave Moran, Christopher Ellis, and Owen Connell as The British Columbians, and they expect their first full length release to be available Summer 2008. In preparation for the CD release they have put together a myspace page, including 4 excellent tracks from the upcoming record. These samplings range from hauntingly beautiful laments to raccous, foot-stomping, hometown [...]
