Hey, Radio Free Chicago! It's time to welcome another new recruit to our increasingly attractive team of writers and photogs, Katie Hovland ! Katie is as esteemed and renowned around these parts as she is wonderful. Need some proof? Well, let's take a look at her pics from last week's Riot Fest and see for yourself. Red Oktoberfest at the Metro Eric Grossmann of The Brokedowns [...]

I would first like to say "greetings" to all you wonderful Radio Free Chicago readers. I could not be more excited to be contributing to a blog of such prestige and working with some of the best music writers not only in Chicago, but just about anywhere. As a college student in Bloomington-Normal by way of the northern suburbs, this opportunity is monumental and comes with a responsibility I do not take lightly. Despite never having lived in Chicago proper, I've still managed to stay well versed in the happenings [...]
The split 7" is a punk rock staple.

One of my favourite finds so far this year/summer are the Broken West ? (Is the Broken West?). I love Down in the Valley, and I love So It Goes. (I also love Kurt Vonnegut) The Broken West was formed in 2004 as "The Brokedown", but then were forced to change their name because of a punk band out of Chicago with the same name that sued them. Recently the band signed the Merge Records , which is super exciting, because Merge is also home to popular bands [...]

Six, or seven, weeks to go until the music starts at SXSW (March 14th), I won't be there, but I guarantee you that the buzz that'll build in the indie music community will be like a pot of strong coffee to me. Last year SXSW had a massive amount of music and the same will be true this year. You may already know that the festival for the past couple of years has hosted hundreds and hundreds of mp3s of bands that were showcaseds at Austin, although this year's showcase mp3s aren't online yet, last years are still [...]

LA's Broken West released their debut album this week, called I Can't Go On, I'll Go On , available on Merge Records. The album is a follow-up to their very successful self-released EP from 2004, The Dutchman's Gold . Just as on their initial offering, the Broken West (and not the Brokedown) continue to write thoughtful, melodic, rock songs. Their style is hard to pigeon-hole, with clear roots in the classic pop-rock tradition, and previous comparisons made to the likes of Matthew Sweet and The New Pornographers. While The Broken West may have found a home on the indie [...]

Here's another handful I'd been hunting awhile and have finally run to earth. At left, The Weepies in a less briny moment. The Galactic Heroes - Sum of Your Parts mp3 Irving - Situation mp3 The Village Green - [...]
When I started putting my Best of 2006 list together, I had initially planned to include both LPs and EPs in the same list. But by the time I was done with my preliminary list, I realized that I had way too many to fit onto one list. While I appreciate the folks who put together annual Top 50 or Top 97 lists, that's just way too many for me. I have a hard enough time ranking 20 discs in relation

This is relatively old news in the uber -fast Internet era, but I did want to mention that due to legal issues L.A.'s The Brokedown have been forced to change their name. That's the bad news. But, the good news is that we like their new name even better: The Broken West . As reported earlier, the band signed to Merge at the end of the summer and will be releasing their first full length at the beginning of the year. [...]
One of the favourite discoveries here at *Sixeyes over the two years I've been writing this music blog is LA based band, The Brokedown. Self-releasing a critically acclaimed EP, The Dutchman's Gold, making the trek to SXSW, and finally signing with premiere indie label, Merge Records, it's been an amazing climb for the band. Now, with the signing to Merge and the recent announcement that their
A slew of records have just been announced in the last coupld days. Here's a little round-up of who went...
War so etwas ein Hit. mp3: the Brokedown / Down in the valley Technorati Tags: the Brokedown , The Dutchman's gold , Down in the valley , mp3 , download , music

I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On" (ET:23. Januar 2007) vergessen. [...]
Los Angeles band The Brokedown has signed with Merge Records . On January 23, 2007, Merge will release the Brokedown's debut LP, I Can't Go On, I'll Go On. The album was recorded over the course of a year with Raymond Richards at Red Rockets Glare studio. Tour Dates: Dates: 09-05 Long Beach, CA - Prospector * 09-07 Los Angeles, CA - Silverlake Lounge # 09-14 Los Angeles, CA - Spaceland ^ 10-29 New Haven, CT - Cafe Nine 10-30 Boston, [...]
Merge Records announced that on January 23rd, 2007, we will release I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On the debut full length from The Brokedown. The Brokedown, who formed in the summer of 2004 in Los Angeles, CA, make their homes in the Echo Park and Silverlake sections of LA, but have toured across the country several times. They already have one critically acclaimed EP to their credit â€" The Dutchman’s Gold - and I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On leaves even that fine EP in the dust, if you ask us! [...]
Author: Paul Tao Subject: The Brokedown Sign To Merge Posted: August 30 2006 (GMT -7) Topic Replies: 0 "These shnozberries taste like shnozberries!" Yay for Los Angeles! The Brokedown , from our neck of the concrete woods in Echo Park and Silverlake, has signed to Merge Records. They will be releasing their debut full length I Can't Go On, I'll Go On on January 23rd. Old school pop [...]
It's official, LA based band, The Brokedown, have finally found a label home, and it's one of the few 'mansions' of indie music, Merge Records. The Chapel Hill label will release the band's first full-length effort, I Can’t Go On, I’ll Go On, on January 23rd. It follows their acclaimed 2004 self-released EP, The Dutchman's Gold, a record that was a favourite of mine from the first instant I heard

"...and don't slow down until you're out of sight." Spouse Hey - This is Lizzy from Come Pick Me Up . That wasn't too subtle, was it? While Taylor is off playing Bono in Kenya (I applaud you, buddy), he asked myself and a few others to keep his baby going. Of course, I obliged. Just spreading the love. Anyways, over at my site awhile back I [...]
