Raymond Richards has been something of a two-headed beast the past few years, his burgeoning duties as an up-and-coming producer at his humble garage studio forcing his singer-songwriter side to the back burner. But now Richards (whose Red Rockets Glare Studio has birthed albums by Local Natives , the Broken West and Ferraby Lionheart , among others) has kick-started his own band, the Idaho Falls . And the man who wears two hats has fashioned a beautiful triptych of an album. "The Spark," the Idaho Falls' third full-length and first in [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Jason Segel, on the occasion of The Late Late Show ' s 1000th episode, performs a slightly revised version of his muppet opus "Dracula's Lament." I checked out the show for Kristen Bell, but stayed for the puppet action. This special espisode was hosted by Wavy the Alligator. I don't know about you, but I feel like Ferguson has catapulted himself onto another level as late night host, separating himself from the pack. Also, this brings up the ginormous [...]

Music doesn't feel so much like a business to Evan Slamka these days, and the Los Angeles singer-songwriter likes it just fine. With his new quintet Square on Square , Slamka has emerged from three-plus years of personal reflection and creative regeneration that followed the dissolution of Majorie Fair , which released one excellent album ("Self Help Serenade") for Capitol Records before sinking into the major-label abyss. The music on SOS's forthcoming five-song EP, "Spectrum of Love," brims with the same keen melodicism and British Invasion shading as Slamka's previous work, except now everything — from [...]
The following bands are no longer bands: Harlem Shakes , the New York indie outfit which released Technicolor Health in March and spawned a group called Arms ; Pela , the Brooklyn indie outfit which released an album and two EPs over its six year existence; and The Broken West , the Los Angeles power pop outfit which released Now or Heaven and will now see its frontman Ross Fluourny go solo. Tissues for all!

Two months later and I'm finally getting around to finishing this post. No excuses except enjoying the summer (post on that later, and by later I mean sooner rather than later) and spending less time in front of computers outside of work, hopefully some of you missed me. There are still a few more Pride celebrations in this neck of the woods over the next few weekends including Jersey City and the Bronx (my birthplace for those that are keeping tabs) so I figured it's still okay to continue posting in this direction before moving on to anything else. [...]

++A quote from Broken West's Ross Flournoy: "Now that some people know who we are, I don't feel like we have to come out with guns blazing and introduce every melody in the first five seconds of a song," he says. "These songs aren't as immediately catchy, but they're more rewarding because they build over time." [Welcome to June. We'll celebrate by kicking off some new residencies — and by wishing the Broken West's Ross Flournoy a happy birthday ...] Oliver Future takes another big step in its morphosis by launching a residency at the Echo, and the first night will offer Useless Keys as main support. ... At Spaceland, Castledoor — its debut album "Shouting at Mountains" barely a month old — flexes its pop muscles, with help from the Monolators [Eli [...]

[Happy birthday to Kim Gordon. And happy Tuesday to you ...] Tinted Windows , the seemingly unlikely conflagration of Taylor Hanson (Hanson), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne), James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins) and Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Track), hits town for a sold-out show at the Troubadour tonight. Tinted Windows' debut album, out last week, doesn't exactly live up to the band's lineage, but you wouldn't flip radio stations if "Kind of a Girl" or "Messing With My Head" came on, although you'd feel more excited if it were [...]
This episode or Reaper , at it's core, was about competition, and it's competition that has essentially squashed all hope of it returning for another season. Long before the season premiere, the series was moved into the line of fire, a sacrificial lamb led to Idol slaughter. Which is why the news that the series is essentially dead , just burning it's remaining episodes, shouldn't come as any surprise. Yet, it stung just the same. Those working on the series saw the writing on the wall pretty early. A [...]

[Happy 63rd birthday to the Rev. Al Green ... now for some sermonizing of my own:] As if the heaping helping of Monday night residencies don't have your concert-going plate full, some great touring acts are hitting town: U.K. dance-gazers Friendly Fires (whose self-titled debut was one of my favorite ablums of 2008) play the Troubadour, and Richard Swift [pictured], whose brilliant "The Atlantic Ocean" was just released last week, joins Vetiver for a show at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts. ...
