You may have noticed that this week's postings have been a bit on the slim side. This is a direct correlation to the fact that as of Monday, my summer officially ended and the extra time I had over the last few months to blog and blather about music has dried up. Not to worry, loyal QBiMites, I'll be doing my darnedest to get back on track this weekend, and make sure that nary a day goes by that you don't hear from your faithful blogger (except for Sundays, 'cuz even a faithful blogger needs a day of [...]
The little 'uns played here. Here are some potential opening lines for this post. Take your pick. Who am I? Why am I here? My, but I've been quite the delinquent lately. There is no band more out spoken or blessed than The Broken West. Straight from Los Angeles, Cali., this mellow power pop band continues to climb the music scene with the upcoming release of their second album, Now Or Heaven, following their debut album I Can't Go On, I'll Go On released in January of [...]
Happy Labor Day, everyone. If you're lucky not to work in retail, you're at home looking at this before you head out to some radical barbecue. That's great for those of you who are allowed to be in the sun for more than 10 minutes. Obviously as a ginger, I am not permitted much more than that; it's quite sad. Instead of going out to "catch some rays," I offer you up some fresh tracks well worth checking out, so hit up this week's Radio Exile mp3 Mixtape. In this edition: [...]

1. Peter, Bjorn and John - "Inland Empire" Download: Peter Bjorn and John - "Inland Empire" In stark contrast to their past material's hook-saturated ebullience, "Inland Empire" is a noir instrumental driven by hi-hat hits, atmospheric sound, and quirky instrumentation. The guitar and horn cliches strain a bit, but those brief mistakes don't take away from a fascinating departure that shows PB&J are more than effervescent pop-smiths. Grade: B+ 2. School of Seven Bells - "Conjur" Download: School [...]

Before I lunge into the insanely jam packed month of music that is September, I'll just briefly hop ahead to what I would refer to as the biggest concert announcement of the year, that is, Neil Young and Wilco 's show at Air Canada Centre on December 4th . IMO, this one trumps the Radiohead show by far, and this is why I stewed over whether or not I should set aside other financial responsibilities to make sure that I attend this one. Ironically, just as I convinced myself that cheap seats [...]

A driving piano pop track that works it's way into a mid tempo, jangle pop rhythm comes from the L.A. band The Broken West, delivering another solid track off their forthcoming album. Recorded in one of the band members backyards,...

1. The Broken West - Perfect Games - This is what a good single sounds like. When you press play and just say yes over and over. It's feel-good, four-on-the-floor. A refined indie sound with a resilient little melody. Nice. [from Now or Heaven (out 9.9) | buy ] 2. The Whigs - Violet Furs - Certainly a straight-up down-stroking guitar song, clean-toned and slightly jangly. Sounds like something from the '90s, in a good way. [...]

Okkervil River - Lost Coastlines [highly rec'd!] I've always admired Okkervil River's ability to self-reflect, to bring you into a song's desolation with Will Sheff and Jonathan Meiburg's deep vocals, fraught with dismay. Though "Lost Coastlines" sounds as though it could be a b-side from The Stage Names, I suspect that the song heralds the use of natural imagery in The Stand-ins . Or maybe I'm just dreaming. "Cause who said sailing is fine? Leaving behind all the faces that I might replace if I tried on that long ride, [...]

Wow, it's been a crazy busy week! It really only feels like a couple of days since I was last posting a mixtape. I wasn't going to get all wrapped up in the Olympics, but I've been up until early morning every day watching whatever the latest gold-medal competition was, leaving me to face the busy work morning still sleepy. I've listened to each of these tracks once, maybe twice this week, so this mixtape is as new to me as it is to you. With such a busy week behind me now, I fully plan to take [...]
Looks like September 9 is a big day for record releases, between Calexico, The New Year, Mogwai, and now The Broken West. "Auctioneer" finds the guys laying down a ragtime sounding piano part and building off it with their trademark buzzy guitars.
