Kip has been raving about Seattle's Akimbo to me pretty much since we met one drunken night at a Mastodon show in the bowels of New Jersey, and with a new album on the way ( Jersey Shores , September 23rd on Neurot) and the spate of press releases that accompany said album, I finally decided to give 'em a shot. And I like. What I'm hearing is a blend of stoner rock/metal ala Mastodon/Isis/Neurosis, but with an extra emphasis on being bluesy and rocking the fuck out. Like, imagine those bands but way less serious [...]

Photos by Ross Herman The summer institution that is Warped Tour rolled through the "DC Area" at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD on Wednesday. With no clouds, no humidity and a high of roughly 90, it seemed like a great day and it was for the most part. HOWEVER, how can you have AGAINST ME! play at 11:45AM?!?! For realz? This year was quite possibly the earliest I ever arrived at a Warped Tour and due to the atrocious layout, [...]

The first album by LA band The Bronx completely blew me away, it was a great mix of hardcore and rock that featured songs that were both hard and totally catchy. Their second album not so much, it was a bit less punk and more rock. I hated it at first, honestly, it was a big let down to me. But after repeated listens, it really grew on me and I began to like it a lot. It's really a different beast to be appreciated in a different way, but still, I loved the energy level of their first [...]

The Good: Beck - "Gamma Ray"; Beck really dropped a bomb with his last release. The Information may have been his weakest album to date, and that paired with a fairly quick turn around time left my anticipation for his next album at an all-time low. But the news that he was working with Danger Mouse changed that up a bit, and on "Gamma Ray" we hear for the first time how well that pairing has

If you’ve not seen the Bronx live, please do. You’re missing out on a vital part of the rock experience. Maybe you don’t feel like shelling out fifteen bucks to see them open on their current tour with Mastodon and Converge. You’d be making a mistake. If you like their ...
For Spring Dancing, Unless Your A Fruity Northern Hemispherian Hey Guys, sorry about the prolonged hiatus, apparently theres this thing called University, it's kind of a drag, and theres work involved. Haven't stopped listening to music though and I thought I'd compile the best of what i've heard while I was away. Some New, Some Not So. Make it into a cd, give it to your Mum. 1. Beck [...]
The Bronx The Bronx Label: Island Southern Cali punk rock band The Bronx have released the follow-up to their 2003 debut, and it's a tad softer than we expected. With songs titled "History's Stranglers" (mp3) and "Rape Zombies," we just thought it would hit a little harder. Vocalist Matt Caughthran does his best to scream out all the lyrics, but it's definitely forced and doesn't always fit cohesively with the songwriting. RIYL: The Hives, Jet, The Vines, Black Flag [...]
In the interest of cross-promotion, this podcast is all about pictures. Why? Mainly so I have an excuse to mention the fact that many interesting and amazing band photographs can be found at Rock Star Photography. At the moment, it’s heavy on the Lawrence and Kansas City bands, but as ...
Mp3 Soundtrack: The Bronx : Kill My Friends (live) This will be my only post today, because I have only these few minutes right now to do ma bloggity blog. Though come tommorow, I will have some nice photos of the YYY's show in Boston. Today I am posting a video of an interview I did with my friend, Foley. I chose this video because I think it's endearing, in a juvenile kind of way. And I used Jumpcut , as opposed to YouTube , because [...]

The wife and I headed out yesterday to see one hell of a punk rock show featuring Lifetime, The Bronx, and The Loved Ones at Metro (which is now awesomely smoke free). We met up with my sister and her boyfriend Tim and Amy's good friend Jolene . Anyhow, The Loved Ones went on first and played a super tight set with a number of songs off their latest record Keep Your Heart including the one below. MP3 | [...]

We all remember how much fun every year SXSW was. So here we go March 18-22 2009. It's just around the corner and you know you won't want to miss it. Whether you're working or whatever it is you do, now's the time to request off because you'll be a sad little rabbit when you hear all about it from your friends. The most up to date lineup list is full of amazing acts from all over. It's waaaay too good and long. Soon enough there will be afterparty RSVPs released, so keep an eye out for them. Not to [...]
