Remember The Bronx ? The Californian punksters who epitomised the sensation that is grime and grunge only fully appreciated by seething, sweating, snotty teens cooped up in a bedroom for two years too long with nothing but a guitar, a filthy fop of cropped Cobain hair and a sneering mentality against that flowing flume perpetually bursting its banks going by the name of the mainstream? Well, there's no need for mourning their demise. It's just that that hardcore tinge has eroded away. And in it's place all set for their next trick: Spanish guitars and Cuban cigars; they've opted [...]

Mariachi El Bronx - Cell Mates The Bronx have always been quick to let people know that they are products of their environment and rightly proud of it. Los Angeles is the gutter, the glitz, the never ending heat and the myriad of every culture imaginable all jostling along for their own space in the sun. They ingest all this and spit it out, rocking faces with potent-as-fuck punk rock. But obviously, as LA is multi-faceted, so to must be the music. An ever-present latin inluence is an aspect of life in southern California [...]

"London's great, but it rains a lot." The average tourist's summary. But this isn't a snippet of conversation overheard on the Picadilly Line, this is the start of mine and Henry's chat with Mickey Factz , a Bronx-born rapper who made his UK debut last night. Sitting backstage at the Scala, with his iBook on his lap and a wearing a pair of spectacles that could easily be vintage Cazal , there is no denying that Factz oozes cool. Extremely confident, it's hard to believe that he only began his career in 2006, when he started [...]

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz has said she has never known "anybody stronger" than her sister Jessica Simpson. The 24-year-old star, who is preparing for the premiere of her new TV show Melrose Place, admitted she is in awe of her sister Jessica, 29, after she was dumped by her boyfriend Tony Romo the day before her 29th birthday. Ashlee said: "I don't think I've ever known anybody stronger than her. My sister is amazing. I spend so much time with her." Ashlee also talked about balancing her career and motherhood after giving birth to son Bronx [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Remember when Garth Brooks had that alt-rawker alter-ego Chris Gaines and everybody was really embarrassed for him? L.A. punks The Bronx also have a seemingly dubious musical alter-ego, but unlike Gaines, it's not totally embarrassing. The band are set to release an album under the guise of El Bronx (how secretive and sneaky!) on August 25th. El Bronx, true to Mariachi tradition, features horns, acoustic guitars, Charro costumes and the help of someone of actual Mexican descent, Vincent Hidalgo (son of Los [...]
Vice always have a habit for laying on amazing line-ups for their parties, but this time they've managed to out do even themselves and land an exclusive of epic proportions. Taking over Village Underground (yep, that place with the tube trains on the roof), the guys have managed to coax not one, but two sets from [...]
I've decided that my newest, and most bold endeavor yet is going to entail suing people who file frivolous lawsuits (ironic huh?). Case in point: 27-year-old Trina Thompson, who has just filed a 70,000 dollar lawsuit against Monroe College in the Bronx because she can't find a job. Thompson says she's been unable to find gainful employment since she received her information technology degree in April. This is reminiscent of the 1994 case Jones v. Fritolay when the plaintif claimed that the Flamin Hot Cheetos didn't actually ignite a fire [...]
You know I've never been much of a fan of Prince. If for no other reason than he has always seemed a bit of a twonk to me, and with a bad case of SMS to boot. And he inspired that excruciating Tom Jones cover...Many years ago I was badgered into watching Purple Rain with an ill-judged girlfriend (she and the film were both big disappointments), but of all his records that at least had some stuff

The Bronx put on one of the wildest punk shows. It's quite a trip, so I was surprised to hear that the Los Angeles band have been playing shows as a mariachi band. It gets weirder as the mariachi version of the band will be releasing a new album under the moniker Mariachi El Bronx on September 1 on Swami Records. Check out the videos comparing The Bronx with Mariachi El Bronx (both from the band's Myspace page) below. The Bronx: Mariachi El Bronx:

[Good morning. I will say one thing about "The Essential Michael Jackson" collection — it's an excellent way to drown out the drone of the helicopters covering today's Michael Jackson Memorial.] Kitty, Daisy & Lewis [pictured] are rockabilly throwbacks who play the kind of music I imagine the nursing staff must have been listening to about the time I was born (that was the 1950s, kids). The sibling band, ages 16, 19 and 21, has charmed the dickens out of their native London, has an album coming [...]

t la rock - "lyrical king (from the boogie down bronx)" (download) This record was released in 1987 on Fresh/Sleeping Bag Records . Fresh is known for some of the earlier EPMD releases, while Sleeping Bag Records was founded by avant-garde musician Arthur Russell . This record featured some production from Kurtis Mantronix , as well as some beatboxing from Greg Nice of Nice & Smooth . A true classic hip hop release.
It's crappy news but drummer Mike 'Ratboy' Novak has left Every Time I Die ahead of the Buffalo hardcore crew releasing their fifth studio album, New Junk Aesthetic on 14 September 2009. We can't wait for it. Ratboy had the following to say about the matter: "I have officially quit Every Time I Die due to personal conflicts. I feel like im getting myself out of an uncomfortable, unhealthy situation, and it's for the best for everyone, and I'm ready to move on with my life. I still [...]

I forgot how crazy hardcore fans can be. This was a post ATP show for The Bronx and having already performing under the guise Mariachi El Bronx earlier in the night to a rapturous reception (the review of this will be in funfunfun zine #2, out soon...hopefully), I was worried that the band might be a little bit weary. Oh how my fears were instantly quashed as soon as Matt and the boys took to the stage. I wasn't prepare for the onslaught from the band and the crowd. Seemingly fuelled by the kineticism [...]
