loopy loopy love www.lilchiefrecords.com/brunet tes i was all set to write about the fact that The Brunettes have a new album coming out called Structure and Cosmetics but then i was reading the Forkcast and i realized they totally scooped me. that in itself is not surprising, because well, they definitely have a much better grasp on what is going on. clearly. anyway, i'm going to assume there are some people out who somehow for some reason don't read Pitchfork, and let you know [...]
It looks like in 2007, everything's coming up Brunettes, especially if you're an American fan of the New Zealand twee-pop band. There's a new single out (you'll have to endure MySpace to hear it for now), their third album is getting an American release on Sub Pop, and they'll be touring North America in June if all goes as planned. The Brunettes are no strangers to the New World, having last come through here for SXSW 2006 after spending the previous summer opening for the Shins and Rilo Kiley. Chances are if you're a North American fan of [...]

Any holiday that gives me an excuse to make a mix is fine by me. Sure, I've been known to say I hate this day and damn all those happy lovey dovey people, but in actuality Valentines Day isn't half bad. Who doesn't like chocolate and cheesy romantic gestures? And let's be honest, who doesn't like love songs. Not this girl. I woke up this morning to a good amount of snow and an even greater hangover -- the perfect mindset to make a Valentines Day mix. It's a bit of an eclectic bunch of songs: some [...]

(RIGHT-CLICK TO DOWNLOAD ENTIRE PODCAST) Program number TWENTY-FIVE features some selections from the recent trend to return to that classic "Girl Group" sound . Of course that innocence and femininity of the Shangri-la's and the Ronnettes have since been liberated, but those groups of the sixties continue to influence our very own Riot GRRRLZ of today! #5-#1 5. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah & The Brunettes (4.3.2006 @ Metro) Two bands I love together! I actually bought the tickets for the Brunettes, but then got into CYHSY before the show. Both acts were awesome, but CYHSY stole the show. The Brunettes were poppy fun (I think every member of the ensemble had a glockenspiel or xylophone), although they had trouble with the crowd as an opener. CYHSY really came alive for me in a live setting. Thanks to the [...]
So in addition to the first day of classes, today will be my first day working at CD Central here in Lexington. I'm pretty pumped because, to quote The Futureheads, "this is the job that people die for." Here's hoping I don't screw it up! MP3: The Futureheads - First Day MP3: ...

Must the sexes really battle? Has thought ever been given to what would happen if we were all to just forgo the barriers of gender, throw out the "anything you can do, I can do better" talk and work together as one? Well in the world of music, I found out that people just aren't that afraid to get...well, harmoniously sexed up. In fact the harmoniously sexed up music tends to eventually fall further into the "good stuff" category. Dual, juxtaposed vocals can grab attention by being soft, brash, quiet, loud, gentle, unkind, flowing and forced all at the same [...]

While listening to the Lovely Feather's Frantic, I wondered what it is that would make an artist come to the conclusion that all that's needed to complete a song is a good "OoOo" chorus of some sort. All the pondering eventually led me to go out and just find these elusive "OoO" songs, and after quite some time and a bit of work, I managed to collar this bunch. After all the work it took, I realized the rarity of all these "oOo" songs, yet just about every time a song implements an "OoO", the finished song turns out great. [...]
