Merey Kimbrough of Mother Merey and the Black Dirt has a vocal style so unabashed it would make Bessie Smith proud. Combine that with the group's foot stomping energy and this band delivers a solid bluesy folk sound like no other. Last week they were the perfectly placed opener for The Builders and the Butchers at The Buzz Mill's Jamboree. Amid the hatchet tossing, jerky making and flapjack eating, there was Mother Merey and the Black Dirt, bringing down the rain with their glorious down home raucous. On May 29th they'll be releasing their album, Down to [...]

Boasting some of the best album sleeves around, together with a fantastic brand of rollicking, dark-hearted folk, The Builders And The Butchers have been longstanding staples of MM playlists for a number of years. They now have a new album, Western Medicine , in the pipeline that draws its inspiration from the post-apocalyptic stories of Cormac McCarthy no less. The first taste is Dirt In The Ground , sonically heavier perhaps, but just as distinctive as always, and just as good. It is unmistakably The Builders And The Butchers, and for that we are [...]

Portland's, The Builders and the Butchers have announced plans to release their 4th album, Western Medicine on July 2nd via Badman Recording Co. Following up on their excellent '11 release, Dead Reckoning - Western Medicine sees the band pushing their dark folk sound forward behind Ryan Sollee's distinctive vocals. The label has this to say: On this new offering, the band set off to create an album that built layers around the already powerful electrified-folk sound they have honed over the years. They gave themselves permission to spend almost a full month in the studio [...]
Man oh man, it's Music Monday! Local Celebrity by Lubec Starting the week off is a marvelous new song from Portland band Lubec that moved here from Virginia a couple years ago (and named themselves after a town in Maine). The song's called "Local Celebrity" and it boasts dueling male-female vocals and fuzz-drenched guitars to give it a charming shoegaze-twee feel. The song is a preview from their upcoming album The Thrall , which they're currently recording with Robert Comitz of Nucular Aminals at his Frawg Pound Studio, and it's currently [...]

Man. I wish I had time to type out some stories but I've barely got time to shit, shower and shave before heading back to work. I really went into this month's show with no plan and came out with, what I think, is a really rad show. There is a good mix between new and old, loud and louder and a cool cover of Faster Pussycat's "House Of Pain." So Imma shut up and you should press play: Track Listing: 01. The Eagles - Outlaw Man (Desparado) [...]

photo by Jason Bergman While the other side of the country faces a heat wave, the weather in Seattle is looking good this week, which is a great reason to go see some local shows! Tuesday features shows from the Detroit Cobras at Neumo's and a quadruple billing of Love Battery, Chix Pack, Speedwobble, and Lost Puppy at Fun House. If you're looking for a musical way to celebrate independence on Wednesday, spend July 4th by going to see the Family 4th show with Pickwick at Gasworks Park or attend [...]

I’m stopping 20 miles short of calling this list a “best of” list. As the stacks upon stacks of cds in my computer room would show, there's so much music from 2011 I didn’t hear that it’s impossible for me to gloss this list anything other than a collection of some my favorite albums from the year. Everything on the Essential Listening list is worthy of your money and ears but as a blog owner I am obligated to bring you one of these lists at the end of every year so here is mine as I felt [...]

Ryan of The Builders & The Butchers ::: portrait by Dylan Priest Sometimes, things go terribly wrong. Such is the theme central to many of The Builders & The Butchers tales of woe, blood lust, just regular old lust, ghosts, curses, disaster and death. Ryan Sollee, lead singer and songwriter of the rowdy Portland crew, spins [...]

There are so many things to love about Portland, OR - the food trucks, the tree-lined streets, Voodoo Doughnuts. I went on a roadtrip up Pacific Coast Highway last fall and fell in love with Portland (and maple bacon doughnuts), which is why I'm really excited to go back this upcoming weekend for Pickathon. Pickathon Indie Roots Music Festival , from August 5-7, takes place on Pendarvis Farm just outside of Portland. For three days, festivalgoers get to see and hear a unique lineup of indie rock, alt-country, folk, and even some R&B bands across [...]

Dear Phil, I'm a terrible singer. My mother once booed me at my 2nd grade talent show because nobody else in the audience had the guts to do it. My unique vocals have been compared to a fox that is getting run over by a lawn rider mower (with a Hemi - no less!). I love [...]
Doe Bay Fest ::: photo by Josh Lovseth In a week full of festival line-ups, there's no denying Doe Bay Fest's was the one we were most looking forward to learning. Alongside many of the expected cast of characters, like four-year festival veterans The Maldives, this year's Doe Bay line-up has expanded beyond its usual radius [...]
