We recently invited the guys from Kenan Bell and Illinois over to our office to hang out for the afternoon, unwinding a bit before their show that night to celebrate the release of the deluxe, full-bundle package of The Adventures of Kid Catastrophe . Next month they'll set off on a fantastic voyage across the U.S., touring with support from The Builders and The Butchers . Illinois are one of the funnest and most interactive live acts I've ever seen, [...]

In his review of The Builders and the Butchers' Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well , our own EN May had the following to say about the Portland outfit's upcoming sophomore effort: "This record, like their last, adds grandiosity to the indie folk/country explosion in the way the Arcade Fire did for indie rock. Salvation 's energy blasts from the speakers and into the imagination like a soundtrack to those King novels, and provide almost the same escape. Just be sure you can find your way home when the [...]
Murder City Devils ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth Our day 2 of Sasquatch was focused around Mad Rad to start, the Avett Brothers and then the Murder City Devils both on the mainstage mid-day, and then Of Montreal to finish off. Each of these bands lived up to their billing, with Of Montreal taking the award [...]

by bmac Pop Out Player "When I look back on all these worries, I remember the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened." ..... - Winston Churchill Stay up my friends. [...]
by charles poladian As the week turns to the weekend, the sun comes out and all is right in the world. That's the way it should work, right? Let's talk about confessions, man it's always hard to look back and go "What was I thinking?" as a wee lad, only 5 or so, I remember being fond of Vanilla Ice. Man that was dumb. Over time, my palette has actually become a well honed tool of discovery and understanding. Probably not, but [...]

The Builders and the Butchers ::: Photo by Josh Last year Sasquatch showed Seattle's up and comer's a whole lot of love, and this year Portland is the local city with the honor of the most performers. In fact it's a veritable who's who of notables coming out of PDX: Hockey, Blind Pilot, Loch Lomond, M [...]
Back in 1982, author Stephen King launched his multi-dimensional Western saga, The Dark Tower series. He would take two decades to complete all seven parts, and with it combine the imaginations of J.R.R. Tolkien and Clint Eastwood for a series that would reinvent the lonesome cowboy hero. What King did to the classic western adventure, Portland's The Builders and The Butchers have done to the story telling, old west-inspired record. Like King borrowing from Tolkien, they have managed to use all the right parts with help from Johnny Cash by way of the Reverend Horton Heat [...]

Portland's community of musicians always seem to band together and put on the best benefit shows. This year's benefit for PDX Pop Now! happening next week is no exception. Just before heading out on tour with the Shins, James Mercer will roll solo, along with a number of other local frontmen. Complete details are on the poster above, and below. Make It Pop! A Benefit for PDX Pop Now! Thursday, April 30 The Cleaners at The Ace Hotel All-Ages $30 Featuring performances by James Mercer of [...]

I'm a little sweaty right now. Not because I've been exercising or getting physical or even sitting in the sun for extended periods of time. No, I'm damp with excitement because The Builders and The Butchers are releasing a new album in, well, nearly two months. And jesus shitcakes if I'm perspiring this much two months in advance, it's going to be a soggy summer. "Devil Town" off of Salvation Is A Deep, Dark Well sounds, you know, a lot like the amazingness that was The Builders and The Butchers first LP. It's a dark, sordid [...]

I walked into the newly renovated and expanded Mississippi Studios just as the Builders and the Butchers finished setting up. The floor was packed. Of course, even expanded, the Portland venue is still intimate and the space fills up quickly. I caught the first of two concerts that evening. Apparently, the Builders and the Butchers were playing entirely different sets and recording the results. I am not sure what they could have played for the late set because I heard almost all my favorites in the first. [...]

Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground ::: Photo by Josh We went out to the new Croc for the first time last Friday to The Builders & The Butchers sold out show. Actually, I think the crowd was at it's biggest and most devoted for the Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground set. So many people were singing along! That's new. Bets were flying about whether lead singer Kirk Huffman's wife Rachel who sings backup and was very pregnant would have her water break while they were on stage. It didn't, but not [...]
This show at The Crocodile features two atypical, orchestral pop groups that make some of the best music to come from the Northwest. With the bigger stage and crystal clear acoustics, The Crocodile should be the ideal venue for these two bands. read more

Paper Brain From: Portland, Oregon, United States A vintage echo in the Pacific Northwest air, Paper Brain's dreamy soundscape, sunny boy-girl swapped melodies and harmonic interludes play to the present while hinting at the past. "I've always loved the sound and tone of the 60's and, consequently, have always cherished the instruments from that era," says Mike Wroblewski (guitars/vocals/bass). "If it were up to me, we'd be playing with all vintage equipment; Moog synths, Wurlitzer electric pianos, any guitars or [...]

So Punxsy Phil predicts a long winter and the weatherman forecasts some snow for the Mid-Atlantic. Welcome to February! On a positive note, plenty of big names and quite a few locals are on the scene during the mid-week. Tuesday Where to start? Usually you have a list of bands like this on the weekend, but you take them when you can get them. DC is the place to be with four great shows. Photo from [...]

I've been in babyland for some time now, but it doesn't mean the flow of music piling into FSHQ has diminished. The one nice thing of holding a baby for hours is that you can listen to a lot on your Ipod. There are so many really excellent releases lining up for 2009 that I've been hearing and it's my first chance to call some of these out. First up, Portland's THE BUILDERS & THE BUTCHERS . I've tipped them quite a bit on how I think they should be [...]
