I Brani [...]

Stories told, songs sung. It's simple this history of ours. Tales of murder, pain, love and loss are written daily and forgotten instantly, but the best are passed from generation to generation like currency, land or genes. In a time where the public is more consumed by those that find and hoard to fuel their own greed or sickness, folklorist Henry Svec - last heard around here under the anonymity of The CFL Sessions - spends his time unearthing stories and documenting melodies for the community. Folk Songs of Canada Now [...]

Bad news, gang. Our long-time friends in The Burning Hell have had a major stroke of bad luck while preparing to finish up a months-long tour of Europe. The folks at Exclaim are reporting that the group's entire earnings for the tour were stolen during the night in Poland. Quoth the band's Nick Ferrio: When we got up in the morning to drive to Berlin for the last show, we found the driver side window smashed out and the van had been rooted through," band member Nick [...]

ARTIST: The Burning Hell - [Album] DATE: 05-07-11 REVIEW BY: Bill Adams The last three years have been a strange journey for Burning Hell singer Mathias Kom. In that time, the singer has gone from wowing critics to disappointing them to confusing them in as many records; in 2008, the singer announced his arrival with The Burning Hell with Happy Birthday and thrilled both audiences and critics [view more]
THE BURNING HELL - My Name Is Mathias from Mitch Fillion (southernsouls.ca) on Vimeo. I was downtown yesterday, and I wandered into the giant new Forever 21. It's three stories of ultra-trendy, disposable clothes for $19.99 or less, the kind of place that makes me vaguely queasy if I think too hard about it but that [...]
Melancholic songwriting about love gone wrong is a dime a dozen. Quality is in short supply when everyone and their kid sister is uploading a sappy ballad onto YouTube. That's why Spring Breakup is worth a million damn dollars. Earlier this year the duo quietly (practically silently) put out their sophomore album. You'll recall their debut got me pretty excited . Mathais Kom is one of the most brilliant songwriters in Canada, his wit and dour world view complement each other perfectly. Kim Barlow is a delightful foil, all precious and precocious and every bit as subtly [...]

Last week you might have noticed a little blast of goodness on our twitterz . Sure, I might have made the rookie mistake of not filling the tweet with slogan laced hashtags or sending it to the major outlets for possible RTs, but it's great news nonetheless. The Burning Hell - aka, ukulele troubadour Mathias Kom and an ever-evolving cast of characters - are about to release a new record. For those familiar with Canada's most impressive uke troop, you know that the band is not one to sit still [...]

The [...]

UPDATE - all 5 copies are now gone. Thanks for entering. It's not surprising that an artist making the long, lonely trek up North would search his inner soul for inspiration. The thing is, when it comes to The Burning Hell 's front man Mathias Kom , I'm not sure he's ever held anything back from his audience. He had long since found alienation and loneliness so instead of a collection of songs offering up a glimpse into his most personal thoughts and fears, Kom's trip to Whitehorse just provided him new subject [...]

Love; as far as pop songs go, pining over the perfect partner is glorified no matter how heartbreaking the end results actually are. For The Burning Hell 's Mathias Kom, Happens in Florida - a track from his terrific debut LP - shows that the shine of love has long been tarnished. The grandiose visions and hope of new love have been replaced by reality, and Kom draws strength from that. His simple strums and witty similes grow into a surging choral swell as Kom dares love to [...]

It's a slow day here on the hill. Last night we were treated to two stellar sets; one from Basia Bulat and one from Owen Pallett and as a result, the review I had slated for today will be up tomorrow. Obviously, we will add some more detailed coverage and poor quality MP3s later, but the dichotomy of the two acts fit the venue perfectly. Basia, playing with instruments and songs that could have been as old as the walls of the church, filled the room with her powerful voice. Owen on the other [...]

I planned on finishing this before tomorrow, but I'm having not enough time to do it like I did for numers 50 - 31. So, the next texts are gonna be shorter, very short. Just a sentence and a song. Hope you don't mind. 30. Megafaun - Gather, Form And Fly ( Home Tapes ) What? Band rooted in indie country, but opening up to a whole array of genres [...]

We've talked about The Burning Hell until we are blue in the face here on herohill. Although Mr. Kom is usually given the credit for the tracks - deservedly so - his traveling collection of rogues transform ukulele tracks into whimsical, witty treasures into smoking romps that get even the most strict of video lotto machine player at Gus' Pub to shake their ass quarters cup. One of those essential cogs is Mike Duguay . You might know him from countless other projects as well ( Evening Hymns , Weird Weather) but Michael is also [...]

Even though The Burning Hell's third album has been out for several months now, it was just recently that I found a record store that stocked it; Weewerk, the label that that distributes Baby, makes Arts & Crafts look like Sony BMG. However, the old adage that good things come to those who wait rings true for my long-awaited rendezvous with this CD, the best that I have heard in a very long time. This is the masterpiece that the previous two albums from this Peterborough collective have hinted at, refining their unique formula that never grows [...]
