Got to thinking about a couple of the self-deprecating comments I made in the last post, and thought "I'll put a couple of them right at least…" So here's the first Lucky Seven for a good while, and it's made up of some of the recordings I made during 2011, which are currently languishing unattended on my hard-drive. Summer Holiday – Wild Nothing Chinatown– Destroyer Undegpedwar – Y Niwl BatteryKinzie - Fleet Foxes Queen of Eyes – Robyn Hitchcock Don't Want Love – Antlers [...]

252 years young the day! That reminds me. Prince Charles was on a visit to Crosshouse Hospital, just outside Kilmarnock a couple of years ago. One of the Hospital big wigs was accompanying him round the wards, steering old Charlie clear of the wasters, winos and swine flu sufferers that were using up valuable bed space. Walking into one ward, The Prince stopped at one of the first beds and asked the young man how he was feeling. The bedridden [...]

I have always been a little wary of Celtic Connections , because my interest in folk music sort of peters out as it gets closer and closer to purely traditional forms, which dominates a fair bit of the festival. Not that they don't give loads of airtime to the crossover of folk into contemporary pop music, because they very much do, it's just that only a certain percentage of the lineup is ever really going to appeal to me personally, that's all. Anyhow, the not very folky at all Broken Records played last night with The Burns [...]

After much consideration I have managed to put the top ten long-players that have rocked my world the most this year in list form. I'm going to get it written up before I decide to fine tune it any more! Where I have reviewed an album on the site I have included a link for your convenience. The one thing that surprised me compiling this list is that some of the records I waxed so lyrical about have ended up lower down the pile than I imagined. A couple in my top ten I have not even reviewed, not [...]

The word supergroup has been bandied about, but happily "Side Show" swerves the usual pitfalls of ego and bloat that the term suggests. The amount of disparate talents actually works in their favour: as each song is penned by at least two band members, it seems like the songs' streamlined nature must have been necessary just to fit everyone in... i review The Burns Unit 's rad debut album Side Show for Never Enough Notes . mp3 : The Burns Unit – " Send Them Kids to [...]
