As payment for services rendered, Facebook gave Choe the choice between a few thousand dollars in cash or stock options. Despite believing the idea of Facebook was "ridiculous and pointless," guess which option he chose? Yup, he chose the stock. Despite only owning between .25 and 1 percent stake in Facebook (the NYT's best educated guess), after the company filed an IPO yesterday, Choe's stock is [...]

Last year, around this time actually, we wrote about a USB Power Outlet from Fast Mac . Now, according to the New York Times there's another USB power outlet offering . Graphic and identity designer Adam Ladd asks his 5-year-old daughter her impressions on some popular logos. The results are hilarious, including her admission that the logos for Jaguar, Puma, and Greyhound are all cheetahs. The interesting takeaway from this is how powerful a logo can be with brand identity. Notice how the little girl instantly recognizes the logos for Disney, McDonald's ("It's a M made from french fries"), Nike, Apple and Starbucks ("that's the coffee place")? If a five-year-old makes a concrete connection between your brand and your logo, then your company is doing something right. [via [...]
"Showtime is gaining on HBO, says the New York Times: Showtime's subscriber numbers have gone from 13.8 million in 2005 to 21.3 million today, while HBO has stayed right around 29 million, and Homeland is much beloved. But HBO still has at least one major advantage in that it brings in " slightly more than $1 billion a year. " Damn, a billion! Showtime brings in just south of $700 million. Now, if HBO would offer an Internet streaming option for its original programming for like $5-$7 per month, they could probably make twice that.
Portland record label Tender Loving Empire is trying to raise funds to build a next-generation shopping system to allow customers to "pay what they what" for the label's various albums. Jared Mees, who founded the record label, is calling this the " Priceless Music Project ." The goal, is to develop the system and then make it open-source for other record labels to use. The cat is out of the bag. Music is free. Despite what record labels, the federal government or Metallica has to say about it, your favorite album [...]
Andy Baio just published his annual look at the piracy of Oscar-nominated movies . First, the good news: "A record 37 films were nominated this year, and the studios sent out screeners for all but four of them. But, so far, only eight of those 33 screeners have leaked online, a record low that continues the downward trend from last year." But, wait: "While screeners declined in popularity, 34 of the nominated films (92 percent) were leaked online by nomination day, with 25 of them available as high-quality DVD or Blu-ray rips. Only three [...]
Dan Seitz, over at Uproxx, offers media companies five easy steps to help curb piracy . Seitz' five steps are fairly obvious to anyone following the trend of technology/piracy/media consumption, which someone in the music/movie/publishing industry has already thought of them. That, however, begs the question of why has no one implemented a decent plan? Seitz argues media industries just need digitize everything as quickly as possible, move to a tiered pricing model, reject DRM or anything else restricting the use of digital content, and work with customers. Look, not to put too [...]
1. Jalopnik argues compellingly that the " check engine light " in cars "keeps car owners in the dark about the condition of their vehicle, and ensures they stay dependent and subordinate to car dealers and mechanics." 2. Is cooking an art? Or are there fundamental mathematical principles underlying great cooking ? 3. Amazon is considering spinning off their Instant streaming video service (currently free with a $79 Amazon Prime subscription) into a standalone service to better compete with Netflix. (This could be a good move, but it would [...]

Vimeo, on the other hand, has focused its redesign on the experience of watching videos . For viewers who want to navigate other related videos, Vimeo has added a tab for "More Videos" that unveils related videos along the top of the page. By [...]

Boxee has just updated their media player device (I love their Windows media player even if I find it ultimately superfluous) to offer the ability to stream live television . The downside is you'll have to buy a $50 dongle to plug into the device and a set of digital rabbit ears ($15) to get broadcast channels. Still, this is a nice step for those looking to cut the cable cord. What would be nice is to see Boxee put all of these offerings into one device. Just build a nice box that has an antenna, [...]

What the what?!? I don't even know what to say about this: "Inspired by the iconic sleeve of Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album, this Waves Mickey Mouse Tee incorporates Mickey's image within the graphic of the pulse of a star. That's appropriate given few stars have made bigger waves than Mickey!" Yours for the low, low price of $25 and your soul/self-respect. Thanks to someone on Twitter for pointing this out. Wish I could remember whom.
Twitter bought Summify and shut down the service immediately until it can be integrated. Andy Baio suggests trying Percolate , which is very similar. Summify is essentially a next-generation news delivery platform. Here's why this acquisition by Twitter matters : What Summify does is essentially stand in front of your firehose, collect the drops of water that are news-related, and then fill up a nice, tidy cup for you containing only (or mostly) news. You can tell Summify you want a tall, a grande, or a venti and the platform [...]
The News: " Patent lawsuits won't save Kodak from an overhaul, it seems: as predicted , the photography company just announced that it's filed for bankruptcy. It's also tentatively obtained $950 million in debtor-in-possession credit so it can keep operating while it formally goes bankrupt: the company says it expects to keep paying employees, serving customers [...]
