It was a four band, all Austin line up that brought a diverse crowd to Emo's Inside. Each band played a forty-five minute set giving the night a SxSW showcase feel. The show preview covered the when/wheres. The show post-view is that Red Falcon kicked things off, The Clouds Are Ghosts had a record release party, My Education worked out new material and The Calm Blue Sea are back. I enjoyed zoning out behind the camera, catching up with friends I hadn't seen in a few months and hearing the latest work from all [...]

Some exciting news hitting this week, as we got word that the guys from The Calm Blue Sea are back..officially. The guys took some time off but have actually been back together playing live for awhile now, and they recently joined forces with one of our favorite new independent labels, Modern Outsider . If you have kept up with ENS or my time with WOXY.com you know I'm a big Calm Blue Sea fan. I found out about them a few months before SXSW 2009 and made a point to book them [...]

If ever a show served as a reminder of why aged men (such as myself) should wear headphones, then this was precisely the set of bands that would help me come back to this obvious realization. Glasgow's The Twilight Sad would bring their swirling sonic blast of guitar pop to Austin, and opening up was local act Calm Blue Sea . Follow the jump for the full show review and some hot photos. It's probably unfortunate that Calm Blue Sea [...]

Allan and I went to see The Calm Blue Sea Monday night at NEU+RAL. While the tickets were basically a steal ($5 to see three bands including TCBS- Sleep for the Nightlife and Reverse Mount Rushmore ), there weren't many people there...I think maybe not more than 20. Nonetheless the music played that night was great! Unfortunately we did have to skip out on Reverse Mount Rushmore due to some circumstances. I have to say off the bat that I have been to a few post-rock shows and I have never been to a [...]
I told you I had an amazing few days with lovely musical people. Well, along with spending some quality time with The Calm Blue Sea (who put on a really wonderful show for what turned out to be a disappointingly small crowd of us) I met two guys who make up The Soil and The Sun . I want to tell you all about them, but first, the four really cool guys from Austin, TX. I don't want to take away from what The Calm Blue Sea [...]

The Calm Blue Sea , a post-rock band from Austin, TX, released their second album last month. It is an original film score to the 1924 silent film, Die Nibelungen: Siegfried , directed by Fritz Lang. You can watch the film synchronized with the band's score on YouTube here . I haven't seen the film with the original music score (played by an organ/piano); in fact, I've never seen any silent films live, but after watching TCBS's score with the film, I'm definitely encouraged to try it out. [...]

One of my favorite albums of last year was The Calm Blue Sea's debut, self-titled album (no idea why it didn't make my end of year list, except that I was overwhelmed with stuff and probably didn't get to it in time!) So I was more than overjoyed to hear that they had been recording this year and moreso that they would finally be coming to Chicago. What they had been recording was an original score to to the 1924 Fritz Lang film, Siegfried . This old black and white film is the story of [...]

Sunday, August 16, 2009 Well friends, its been a while since I've been standing on this here soap-box, pawning off advice about new tracks and vids in the Austin scene. Luckily, since that time a slew of new releases has taken us out of a mild drought of local music. Today, we'll see new releases from The Calm Blue Sea and New Roman Times (a release I've been waiting for for what seems like years now) and a video from the Octopus Project. New Roman Times - On [...]

Calm Blue Sea is an Austin band that have been known for their innovative take on music and their willingness to try things in a unique way. That being said, it should come to no surprise that the locals have embarked on this new project of scoring an entire film and releasing the soundtrack completely on their own. You may remember way back in March when we told you about CBS live scoring the old black and white cult favorite film Siegfried . Yes? Well shortly after that show, the band spent some studio time [...]

One of our now favorite Austin bands Calm Blue Sea are playing another show at Emo's on Sunday night. If you have yet to catch this band live or haven't heard their new record , make a point to do so before the nation picks up on them. Supporting bands for this one are Girls From Enola , Irepress , and Hotel Hotel . Doors are at 8 and show stars at 10pm. Download: The Calm Blue Sea - We Happy Few [MP3]

Our friends The Midget Men are planning quite the party at Mohawk on Friday. The event is in celebration of the band's 7 year anniversary and will sport a nice lineup of local and buzzworthy bands. The inside stage features Bankrupt & The Borrowers , The Frontier Brothers , Calm Blue Sea , and Mice & Rifles . Outside stage will showcase Deaf Ears , The Pons , and the obvious set by The Midget Men . Music kicks off at 9pm on the outside stage. Freeloaders take note, [...]

Just wanted to drop a quick note about an awesome show at The Mohawk this Sunday night. Two of my favorite bands are playing the inside stage on the evening in question, one local and one decidedly not local. The evenings headliners are Scotland's own The Twilight Sad. I fell really hard for this band a couple years back when they released their jarring debut 14 Autumns and 15 Winters back in 07. It made it all the way to #2 on my best of list for that year and I think I [...]
