Friday Films is a weekly post with videos of new songs by London acts I like… Cymbals - Summer Escaping Have you ever watched a dog try to chase its own tail? The freaked-out , fucked-up bass cuts on this super new record from Cymbals kind of remind me of that. It's a game the dog can never win, but still he plays, endlessly. [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.] Fujiya [...]
Okay. So it might be a bit mean to call anyone with glasses "boffin". (To be fair, I've worn glasses for pretty much as long as I can remember, so I've been called "nerd", "geek", and whatever other denigrating sobriquets, so these kinds of things don't faze me). But given that Peterborough duo the Candle Thieves make bleepy, boppy music on electronics, I think it's fair to call them two eccentric boffins making eclectic music. This time around, they're attempting to add their name to the 'breathing' hall of fame: yes, [...]

Heart-felt, slow building indie-pop is delivered with sincerity alongside a stirring and stammering vocal echo from the Peterborough pairing, The Candle Thieves. Breathing (Just For You)', gets its playful spirit from the melodic instrumental build and the seriousness comes the in the delivery of the power of love extolling lyrics of Scott McEwan. The latter element is also built upon in the stern, steadfast percussion, keeping the rhythm rustling. The repetition of the slightly lame chorus line, takes the song just the wrong side of the sentimentally acceptable line as far as many are concerned. However, the [...]
perky Peterborough duo the THE CANDLE THIEVES have unleashed a video for their single single, the BREATHING (JUST FOR YOU) . not too dissimilar to the NADA SURF nor the EELS, if that's your cuppa then give the below a view. wotyougot
I already knew The Candle Thieves before, but never got to check out the video for their "Sunshine Song"! Produced by Richard Cullen, who was nominated for the UK Music Video Awards for this work, "The Sunshine Song" is one of the best animated videos I've seen in a long time. And as the song itself beautifully suits nice summer weather it's also a must have in your own collection. mp3 | The Sunshine Song
The Candle Thieves The Candle Thieves are Scott McEwan (Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Glockenspiel, Casio Keyboard) and The Glock (Piano, Backing Vocals, Glockenspiel, Harmonica, Melodica, Snare, Shaker). Two guys from Peterborough, now living in London. They create happy clap pop music, with a lovely mix of alternative pop, glockenspiel pop, sunshine pop, with some good influences [...]
From the album Sunshine And Other Misfortunes : We thoroughly enjoy The Candle Thieves , as evidenced by the fact that this is the third time we've posted something by them. The first two posts can be found here and here . More songs can be found at their Myspace page .

Ryan(StopMe): I'm still buzzing from seeing Kick-Ass at the cinema and went on a Mark Millar Comics spree as soon as I got out of the theatre. First I read the twisted humour of 'Wanted' (So much better than the lame film adaptation), then on to the fascinating 'Red-Son' which is about what the world would be like if Superman was a Soviet instead of a blue-eyed American son, and now I'm halfway into 'Kick-Ass' itself. It hasn't all been Superheroes and Supervillians this week as I've found another ten delightful tunes: [...]

It's starting to feel like Spring is finally here. The temps inch up the thermometer every day this week. This inspired me to do some spring cleaning on the inbox. This post will be three tracks sent to me by email from artist looking for some exposure. Exposure I think they all deserved. Enjoy. PENNY HILL Penny Hill is an alter ego of Norman, Oklahoma's Hilary Pitchlynn, but shhh... don't tell anyone. Hesitant to ever step on a stage, [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours Scott McEwan, one half of duo the Candle Thieves, along with 'The Glock' are about to head to SXSW, armed with new single 'We're All Going to Die (Have Fun)' and lots of practice playing weird and wonderful places like ice cream parlours (see below), boats and fans' kitchens. The pair from Peterborough -- who are a recent Spinner Band of the Week -- are currently recording their debut album, which no doubt will be as whimsical and marauding as their previous singles have [...]

p I have been really enjoying the sweet melodic pop of U.K. newcomers The Candle Thieves recently. The emerging British band are signed to Downtown Records, which is the home of bands like MSTRKFT, Justice and Major Lazer. The duo of Scott McEwan and The Glock makes beguiling, delicate pop music. They stick to the basics - honest songwriting with pop-savvy, effervescent melodies. Diamond Cut remixed "We Are All Gonna Die" and turned it into shimmering synthplosion. Highly recommended. The Candle Thieves "We're All Gonna Die" (Diamond [...]

One of Tracasseur's finest and also one of the most frequently blogged acts here, Diamond Cut is actually releasing remixes in an impressive pace. We can't hardly keep it up with him so now it's going to be a little sum-up of his latest remixes. The other day we got one in the mailbox from our great friends over at Work It Media . It was a great and kind of slower remix from Diamond Cut of a new young English duo named The Candle Thieves , who are having their first official release [...]
We've been very impressed with many of Diamond Cut 's recent reMixes so when a new one hits the electronic rumors inbox it always makes us sit up and pay attention. Here he has turned his skills to Lo-Fi bedroom popsters The Candle Thieves and their track 'We're All Gonna' Die (Have Fun)' turning the quirky Indie-Pop track into a smooth ElectroPop journey that carries you away on sweeping synths whist retaining the intimate feel of the original. Great stuff! ♫ The Candle Thieves - Gonna' Die (Diamond Cut Slow [...]

The Eels-esque, sweet lullabies of The Candle Thieves impressed me on their debut EP, and the good news is that they have a full length coming out on April 5th. The questions is - are they going to cross the line into sickly sweet as they sometimes have, or are they going to show more depth and variation that is possible with a long play? We will just have to wait and see - it could be amazing, it could be the complete opposite. They will be releasing a single called 'We're All Gonna [...]

The Great Inbox Clearance is my way of getting through the overwhelming number of emails we received after taking a week off. Check out this post for the details behind the project. That post will also explain why lemurs are involved. The Candle Thieves were part of my original inbox clearance back in October. At that time, they were getting the word out regarding The Sunshine EP , a 4-song collection of warm, mid-tempo pop that I thoroughly enjoyed (you [...]
Hi all, this week's podcast is brought to you direct from sunny (?) Manchester, where we've got a new wave of indiepop emerging from the depths of Britain's underground clubs and pretentious indie cafes. And I (Archelon) am here to introduce you to some of them. Here's the lineup: The Candle Thieves - The Sunshine Song The Hot Melts - Edith Raygun - Just Because The XX - Crystalised Let's Tea Party - [...]

This is the second time I'm doing this kind of shorties post, and it may show that I'm better than I thought on consistency... During a week, I post a lot of news and finds on my twitter @eardrums and I get a lot of email that never gets published on the blog. I'll try to post some of it here + give you some recommendations to new releases you should buy. Let's start with some "VERY SHORTIES" and below this, you will find a lot of free goodies and music recommendations: [...]
All this week, I'm (finally) going through my overstuffed inbox and sorting out the best bands that sent music my way . Though this will certainly showcase several bands who deserve greater exposure, this will mainly serve as proof that I'm pretty awful at writing music reviews. If you read these and feel that – somehow – you'd like me to check out your band for possible review, head over to the Submissions section, give it a quick read, then send a shout-out to carl@theopeningacts.com . We're having server issues today. [...]
