It's Friday, at long last. Not because I've been working so hard (I'm currently jobless) but because shit is happening this weekend and I've been bored. As I've not been working I've been able to catch up on all sorts of music, new and old, and I thought I'd share some of it with you. It's a varied mix, from Swedish alt-rock to some West Coast lo fi to one of my favourite Latin songs. Anyway, peruse, listen, browse and do any number of other things with the music. Finally, be sure to buy anything you like. To [...]
Leaving your fans waiting nine years for your first visit to their country is a potentially dangerous tactic, building expectation to almost impossible levels. But when it comes off as well as it did for The Cat Empire last Friday night, it seems like they planned the whole thing in advance. When State saw the band play in Calgary during the summer , a warning was issued that this Dublin date might well be the party of the year. The sold out venue was packed with eager Irish fans and Australian ex-pats all itching to get their [...]
Melbourne folk outfit Tinpan Orange are embarking on a 2 month long tour supporting fellow statesman, The Cat Empire , through Europe and the UK. The two have collaborated rather extensively throughout the band's history. Their debut album, Aroona Palace features Harry Angus and Ollie McGill of The Cat Empire. Their second album, Death, Love & Buildings features Renee Geyer . Harry Angus often accompanies the band in live shows, playing trumpet and keyboard. He also produced their latest album, The Bottom Of The Lake . The video above [...]

Ahhh, summer... If mine wasn't currently operating as the antithesis of all this relaxing and peaceful I would definitely have had this mix up sooner, but alas, it wasn't to be. However, seeing as tomorrow I head out on an 18 day family vacation (never too old!) it's time to get these summer jams pumping! Today is Volume 1 and the next two Fridays will bring Volumes 2 & 3 respectively. I've never understood the concept of an all-encompassing summer mix because like all things amazing, summer has many facets and is home to many moods. So I've gone and put together 3 [...]
The Cat Empire are Australia's best melting pot band. They blend more styles and genres than Starbucks blends coffee beans. I loved, LOVED their 2007 album "Two Shoes". Their music is like having your best friends over for a party and everyone plays an instrument, everyone can sing, and everyone speaks more than one language. Their music is made for the summer. Their new album "Cinema" is more of the same. 42 minutes of pure fun and enjoyment. Of musically and lyrically intrigue. It came out this past Tuesday. I recommend you pick it up. Forget M.I.A., Girls, Beach [...]
The weather's starting to get a bit flaky so today's planned BBQ roast has been canned - in aid of this roast leg of lamb badboy we can safely munch indoors. Now you'll be needing some musical accompaniment to go with that grub and first up we've got a cracker from the amazing new album from The Cat Empire . The album's called "Cinema" and aye, it's great as expected and this is one of my fave tracks from it. Nice summery type goodness with the horn section in effect. [...]
Four tracks from Oz for you this fine (yet bloody chilly!) evening. I came across this tune by The Ravenous while trawling through Triple J Unearthed - it's all moody and meandering and I can't get enough of it. Hurricanes and Fireworks - The Ravenous You can hear more from this Melbourne trio here on their Unearthed artist page - they have two other songs available for free download, including the rather romantically titled 'You Look [...]

Cat Empire to Tour UK
The Aussie band are celebrating their tenth year of gig-playing...
Felix Riebl
The Cat Empire is one of the funkiest (if not the most funky) band from Australia. They've had more lineup changes (read: guest musicians!) than Wings (sorry!) and create music based on everything you can associate with summer and holidays. They're known for their brilliant live shows and have pretty much been on tour since [...]

Interview with The Cat Empire's Ollie McGill
The Cat Empire are a jazz, funk & ska infused band from Melbourne, Australia. Formed nine years ago they have a reputation for incendiary live performances and though they just played their 800th show in the UK, tomorrow night's gig (October 29th) in The Academy, Dublin is their first ever visit to Ireland. Earlier in the year State caught up with keyboardist, Ollie McGill, at the Calgary Folk Music Festival in Canada of all places. You're not exactly folk music but you're here playing at the Calgary Folk Music Festival. [...]

The Cat Empire Release Cinema
As we mentioned last May, Melbourne based eclectic band, The Cat Empire were preparing to release their 4th Studio album, CINEMA. Their first two reaching double platinum status and the third receiving an ARIA Music Award for best world album. We also shared the lead track off Cinema. Today, the album has been released worldwide. The Cinema Launch party was a small intimate setting of friends but was broadcast to over 50 countries virtually. Below a few clips from the launch and some samples of the album. We're hoping for a US tour here once [...]
