Believe it or not, Mad Mackerel has been around for more than five years now. During that time we’ve posted more than 4,000 times, and offered more than 5,000 songs for your listening pleasure. And more than three quarters of a million people have paid MM a visit during our lifetime on Google’s (godawful) blogspot and since April 2010 on WordPress. We asked some of the regular MM contributors to give us their top twenty songs since MM first went live and we’re also going to give you one big mega-listing shortly, first up was Dr Roddy [...]

Believe it or not, Mad Mackerel has been around for more than five years now. During that time we've posted more than 4,000 times, and offered more than 5,000 songs for your listening pleasure. And more than three quarters of a million people have paid MM a visit during our lifetime on Google's godawful blogspot and since April 2010 on WordPress. [PHOTO: Matt Dressen for Clicky Clicky] Philadelphia noise-pop crew Bleeding Rainbow blasted through a bristling, low-fanfare set at Portland's Wonder Ballroom Friday, visiting town in support of its third record Yeah Right , which was released earlier this year on Kanine Records. Bleeding Rainbow has successfully moved beyond the more traditional pop approach of its past and in the direction of a more calculated guitar band, one evocative of a very specific point in alternative rock history. The strength of the band's more recent approach was on [...]
As previously mentioned, we're overly excited about getting our Lost in Austin takeaway videos back off the ground and running. Our first subject in the relaunch featured Cave Singers and we shared the first part of that video series last week . Today we've got part 2 and we couldn't be happier with the way things turned out. Follow the jump for video. I'll save another long winded introduction this time and just let you know that the song featured in this video is entitled "Evergreens" and appears on [...]

We made it. I made it. Winter could not take us. I want to both berate nature for having inflicted all those cold, hellish months on me and thank it profusely for having whisked them away with chirping birds and blooming iris' and sunshine. This is the conundrum of the Midwest clime and it is one that baffles me every damn year, despite 30 of them here. Here, when it turns cold, you grit your goddamn teeth and steal yourself against the wind and you pray it's one of those [...]
Wow, it's been way too long since we've managed to shoot one of our world famous Lost in Austin videos with Guerilla Waltz . Almost a year to be exact, since we last ran the incredible video of Suckers at Red 7 . Well today is a turning point in the series, as we jump start a new era for our takeaway videos with longtime ATH favorite Cave Singers. Follow the jump for full description and video. When discussing options to get back in the game with our [...]

Friday, for the people who didn't get tickets from KROQ for Depeche Mode at the Troubadour: ► London rockers the Veils visit the Echo in support of their new album "Time Stays, We Go," supported by Andy Burrows, Pop Noir and Deluka. We like what the Veils do . ► With a summer tour supporting Depeche Mode ahead, Crystal Castles bring it at the Hollywood Palladium, supported by the Invisibles and Doldrums. That's their video for "Sad eyes," above (and you can get a remix of the song here [...]

photo by Renata Steiner ( view set ) Few band names are as apt as The Cave Singers . Not quite a folk band and definitely not your typical indie rock band, The Cave Singers seem to have hatched their sound in seclusion, as if alone amid darkness and firelight. Their songs are rustic in style but not necessarily in execution, airy but also often droning, haunting at times but ultimately rejoiceful -- in all, totally unique and instantly recognizable. Now on their fourth album, they guys (Pete, Derek and Marty) continue to widen their [...]

The weather was beautiful in Austin on Saturday night and the setting was perfect for a much anticipated show by Seattle's own Cave Singers . Though the crowd may have been a bit thin due to so many shows going on around town, it seemed like everyone in attendance agreed that the band killed it. Follow the jump for a few quick thoughts. A quick minor complaint before I jump into band reviews.... I wish that some venues in town could get the music going a little bit earlier [...]

Frank Yang Objectively speaking, there's not a world of difference between Widowspeak's 2011 self-titled debut or the follow-up Almanac , released in January of this year. You can file them both quite comfortably under "the soundtrack to dreams of dusty country roads", not too far from lazy but not inaccurate reference points Mazzy Star and Cat Power, but something about Almanac grabs me the way that Widowspeak , as much as I dug it , didn't. And it's not something as simple as they're getting [...]

Date 4/20/13 Location Red 7 Doors 9pm Tickets $10 @ Frontgate Saturday night is a great night for shows in Austin and it seems like you've got tons of options with all types of genres represented. Yes even the ATH crew will be split up all over town, but this guy will be heading over to Red [...]

Touring to promote the release of their latest album Naomi , the folk-rock quartet set up shop at the Brighton Music Hall this past Sunday to perform a refreshing lot of foot-stomping melodies born from the evergreens of the Pacific Northwest. I was first exposed to The Cave Singers at the Newport Folk Festival this past summer. Mingling with the crowds on that Saturday afternoon, I stumbled upon lead-singer Paul Quirk sucking the life out of a harmonica while guitarist Derek Fudesco sat hunched over his instrument, effortlessly plucking [...]

Indie rockers Darwin Deez play the First Unitarian Church tonight. The Asheville, North Carolina band formed in New York City in 2009, feeling at home at the Sidewalk Cafe, a launching pad for off-beat pop acts including Kimya Dawson and Adam Green. The band released their self-titled debut of upbeat, dance-along tracks shortly after in ... Continue reading
Citing breakfast cereal commercials, zebra print spandex, Elfquest comics, film noir, beat poets and nature as sources of inspiration, Wrong World are a high-energy four-piece out of Philadelphia that got their start playing two songs over and over in a basement as an instrumental trio before scrapping that approach and adding a vocalist. That exact ... Continue reading
