Your Sunday selections: ► San Diego-based Steve Poltz , the wildly entertaining singer-songwriter-satirist who rose from coffeehouse phenom to collaborate with Jewel and become known for sing-alongs, headlines this month's edition of the Sunday Night Jones at the Satellite. The evening also features Billy Harvey , the hosts Daniel Ahearn & the Jones and a post-headliner songwriter circle in the Satellite's back room. ► Guitar whiz Marnie Stern (pictured) visits the Bootleg Theater, supported by Dunes, Wet & Reckless and Cinderella Motel. ► The Chapin Sisters bring their [...]

The beautifully haunting harmonies of the Chapin Sisters (who now consist of Lily and Abigail Chapin) first floated onto the scene when they released their "Oh, Hear the Wind Blow" EP and their debut full-length "Two" shortly after during 2010. They've taken some time off after the departure of member (and half-sister) Jessica Craven. However, they haven't completely parted ways with the stage since then. Singing in She & Him's backing band has kept the duo busy, and they've also spent this time writing new material for a sophomore release expected sometime in 2012. If the new record [...]

Tom Brosseau and John C. Reilly photo by Kate Rentz The New L.A. Folk Festival put together a cozy Louvin Brothers tribute show at HM157 featuring covers of Louvin classics by an array of L.A. folk-inspired bands. Fort King started the night off a little rocky by cutting a song in the middle when singer Ryan Fuller could not hear his guitar, but the crowd would have preferred he just play through to keep the vibe magical and not stall. When you're only playing two songs, it seems like you gotta be a trooper and keep [...]

► Sunset Junction's website teased a music lineup announcement today, but there's no word yet. There are plenty of great names floating around on the rumor mill for the Aug. 27-28 street fair. How would you feel about another blast from the Melvins (who did a Silver Lake residency in January)? Yeah, that'd be nice. So would some indie-rock from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Tapes N Tapes , as would some upbeat pop from the likes of Hanson and the Belle Brigade . Also unconfirmed [...]
Despite their famous folk lineage, the Chapin Sisters are proudly stepping out on their own, and in answering PopMatters ' 20 Questions, they start debating between the Beach Boys and the Beatles, Star Trek and Star Wars , and how they once got to share the stage with DMC . . . The best part about the Chapin Sisters' unique indie-folk sound is how it is completely, uniquely their own--a great thing in its own right, and an even more astonishing aspect when you take their famous lineage into consideration. Lily and Abigail's story starts [...]

I realize it's taken forever to get these first two videos from our SXSW party up on the site, but we think it'll be well worth the wait. On the first day of SXSW, we set up a recording stage at Empire Auto and filmed sets by The Chapin Sisters , Fierce Creatures , A B & The Sea and more. I'll also be honest with you. There were a few problems with the audio; we didn't get to [...]

SXSW Pepper Rabbit Pepper Rabbit's set at The Orchard's party on Friday morning was a bit of an odd one - the group's normally lush and orchestral sound was stripped down as Xander Singh played solo in in front of a small group of us at Bar 96. Xander admitted, "It's a little weird to hear my music like this." Weird, maybe, but still a lovely way to start off the day, and hearing the tracks performed that way was a [...]

Well this is it, the top 10 albums of the year. Based on a lot of lists I've seen around the web, mine will be quite a bit different than most, but hopefully that will expose more people to different music as well. Be sure to check back tomorrow for my songs of the year. 10. Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me [...]
Top 4 reasons to procrastinate wrapping holiday gifts tonight: ► John Grant , whose album "Queen of Denmark" got the nod as the top release of the year by Mojo magazine, is joined by the Chapin Sisters and J. Tillman for a 7 p.m. show at the Autry Museum. That's Grant's video for "Chicken Bones," above. ► The bill at the Echo looks as if it was grabbed from an "L.A. Bands to Watch" list for 2011 — Lord Huron , Funeral Party , Lesands and Belle [...]
