The first time I heard an advance of Cold War Kids' third album "Mine Is Yours" last fall, "Skip the Charades" stood out as its thematic core. A simple plea for emotional truth, deftly executed, spiked with Jonnie Russell's pinprick guitars and soaring on Nathan Willett's aching vocals. If you thought you had reality sussed, that you'd heard the weirdest, wonkiest and most remarkable, Nick McCarthy's Box Codax ought to give your every sense a rigorous shuffle. They'll have you hurling your records skywards like insignificant confetti in unguarded frivolity. Or at least the devilishly decent first half of Hellabuster will.
