"Tiny Fingers" is lush and exotic, with sounds of broken sitars, brass, and wind chimes backing a gentle acoustic strum. Like everything on Red Velvet Snow Ball, it would be the perfect accompaniment to a day of greenery – lying in the green grass, staring at the green trees swaying above you, and perhaps indulging in something that would make the sky appear green.

Way back in the early to late 90s, some things never changed. I, on the other hand, changed plenty. Thats right, my voice changed, my clothes changed... yes, my clothes. Why you ask? Well, I too like many before me and since then dramatically changed the music I listened-to... almost on a year to year basis. So its because of this nostalgia that I thought I'd showcase a few of my favorite songs from each year of high school. I may be blocking out nearly everything else that happened back then, but the music will always have a special place [...]
The Charlatans UK - Sproston Green Music Hall of Williamsburg Brooklyn, NY 9/14/10 I couldn't help but laugh this summer when I went to my childhood home and found a The Charlatans UK advert cut out of an early 902s SLUG (Salt Lake Underground) magazine of their classic press photo with 'CANCELED' stamped across it. [Side bar: Did you know that 'canceled' and 'cancelled' are both acceptable spellings? Who knew?] Attempting to see The Charlatans UK has been a decade-long running joke to me and, I suspect, [...]
Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. [tweetmeme] In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler offers a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes. The Charlatans (UK) "Love Is Ending" from Who We Touch [ released 9/14 | Brit-pop, indie rock [...]

When you write these little blurbs week after week, patterns begin to emerge. There are generally healthy doses of both pleasant surprises and shocking turns. In the end, this helps you realize that no week is entirely good or bad but a composite of many things. This applies not just to the music industry but to life itself. And it really makes you think (at least it makes me think). This essentially means that I have to find creative ways to articulate the same message come Friday. It's an enjoyable albeit challenging task. Well, at the risk of sounding utterly illiterate, [...]
For Tim Burgess , of The Charlatans (UK) , reinvention became in large part, the bright spot of his group's creative process. Tim (whose own muse of invention this time around was borne on the forming of one prolific note: an "F" sharp―see more in the interview that follows) was recently very quick to note, that the most interesting turn for him was his band's brand new album. "....it's kind of resonating in a way, that, I really hoped it would...and [doing] what, in a way, none of our records have done before. They've never crept [...]
It's been a rough few months for drummers. After the death of You Say Party's Devon Clifford in June, the drummer for The Charlatans (or The Charlatans UK as they're known stateside), Jon Brookes, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Brookes passed out during the band's September 15th set at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia, PA, and was discovered to have the tumor shortly thereafter. The band confirmed the diagnosis and has chosen to cancel the remainder of its US tour dates. They will, however, continue on with a "short-term replacement" for their forthcoming UK [...]

[I had hoped to post this early in the week to preview the Charlatans UK's L.A. show, but as you may have read , the band's U.S. tour, including a scheduled stop tonight at the El Rey, has been postponed after drummer Jon Brookes collapsed onstage in Philadelphia last week. He is being treated for a brain tumor amid an outpouring of well-wishes from Charlies fans — please add mine — and the band is trying to arrange for a short-term replacement, according to a statement today. Meanwhile, "My Foolish Pride," the band's second single off their new album, [...]

We reported last week that Charlatans drummer Jon Brookes collapsed during at show at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia on Wednesday night. After canceling their remaining U.S. tour dates, the Charlatans have announced that Brookes, having returned to the U.K., will be undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. The band thanks its fans for their support, and has also announced they'll be recruiting a "short-term replacement" for future dates while Brookes is away. An exclusive video interview with singer Tim Burgess and a three-song LWMB acoustic session can be found below.
Photo courtesy of DHDesign Philadelphia's music scene doesn't get up early enough for a morning roundup. While the rest of the world is sipping on their lattes and reading about international affairs, we're nursing our hangovers and trying to shake the ringing out of our ears. But that doesn't mean we don't like to (eventually) stay informed. Snooze Alarm presents Philly's most important local-music-related news, whenever the scene finally [...]

The Charlatans UK , who played last night right here in Philadelphia, were on stage at local Fishtown favorite Johnny Brenda's. In the middle of the group's song "Tellin' Stories" (a track that was a special request from a fan who showed up early), talented drummer Jon Brookes (who has incidentally been lighting up the stage with his fantastic playing for the group's US dates) suddenly seemed to stop. The band and crowd slowly came to the realization that Jon needed medical attention and was having a seizure. Thankfully there was a doctor in attendance at the show [...]

The Charlatans (or more often referred to here in the states as The Charlatans UK ) are returning with a new album on September 14th entitled Who We Touch . If that's not enough, the band will be returning to the United States for a string of tour dates in support of the record starting on September 7 at The Loft in Atlanta. After the jump, check out the full list of tour dates, including three New York City area dates (September 11 at Maxwell's in Hoboken, September 13 at Bowery Ballroom, and September 14 at the [...]

The Charlatans are back and of course this is cause for excitement... it's even more exciting for those of us stuck in the U.S. since they're touring here in September! This song is actually a lot heavier than what I was expecting for their lead single but I really like it. Check out their "beautiful Michael Clarke inspired, Douglas Hart of The Jesus & Mary Chain fame directed video" for their new single below! The Charlatans - LoveIsEnding Horrors Remix by [...]
Last week we told you the news about The Answering Machine 's forthcoming record (that it's done; that it's called Lifeline ; that it will be released worldwide in January). But we didn't tell you about a quick burst of live engagements the Manchester, England-based quartet has lined up later this week in California. Inspect the dates below, and if you are a left-coaster, plan accordingly. 07.29 -- Private Party in Chinatown -- Los Angeles, CA 07.30 -- Club Underground at The Echo -- Silverlake/Los Angeles, CA 07.31 -- The Fox Theater Rooftop -- Pomona, [...]

The Answering Machine are a U.K. quartet that does its Manchester heritage proud — brightly biting, melodically inviting, their 2009 debut album "Another City, Another Sorry" races through 36 minutes of punky Britpop as if the Libertines, Arctic Monkeys and Cribs were thumb-twiddlers. They aren't, of course, and TAM will sound familiar to you Anglophile hearts, but a fresh dose of ragged attitude is always welcome: Singer Martin Colclough and mates are already working on a follow-up, due later this year or early in 2011. In addition, the foursome recently convened with the Smiths' Mike Joyce to [...]
