We'd like to thank and acknowledge Spazz Fest promoter and godfather, Jeff Blinder, as a special contributor on this post. He provided descriptions and links for each band, we added some links to music videos, free music and other stuff. CASPER & THE COOKIES (Athens, GA) Illustration: R.Stacey Palmer/Disturbing Fish Designs So excited to be bringing this band back to Greenville! Our local faves, The Charming Youngsters , released Fortescue this Tuesday on Bandcamp. You can purchase the four track EP for a BUCK! That's one dollar... Did you know that's like 92 cents in Australia right now? You can't buy anything in Australia for 92 cents, but you can get Fortescue . We love the Charming Youngsters , and are happy to spread the word. If you like jangle or power pop, you'll love this band. We've featured single, Walls , several times. Now check out Fortescue [...]
A Kite and Its String created with Google Maps Featuring three large universities (UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State, and Duke U.) and 10 other colleges and community colleges, the cities of Chapel Hill, Raleigh, and Durham form "The Triangle" area of North Carolina. For many years, the Triangle region has served as a hot bed for indie rock, and is often underrated when compared to the likes of Athens and Austin. Like these other southern university cities, the Triangle is famous for a confluence of music styles [...]

Fresh on the heels of the release of their third album, Flux Outside , Knoxville band Royal Bangs will grace the Emerald City with a performance at Live Bar, this Wednesday 30 March. Since 20082s We Breed Champions , Royal Bangs has been producing experimental indie-rock that is visceral, engaging, and wholly original. Their music is a jumble of funk, glam, psychedelic, and classic rock that celebrates the quirks and poise of humankind. Bring some extra cash so that you can pick up a copy of their new disc. In the mean [...]
The Love Language started as a project of catharsis, and became a band in the process. McLamb's first recordings were solo tracks intended to help McLamb get his bearings following some failed relationships and ensuing reckless behavior. Those initial tracks informed his 2009 debut, The Love Language . Spurred to move forward with his life, he assembled a group to record his second album, Libraries, in 2010 on Merge Records. The Wilmington native will play SpazzFest solo on Saturday evening. His heartfelt, powerful lyrics blast out of his mouth with conviction and soul. [...]

Each month Skatterbrain features a monthly mix, and I absolutely love the covers. The cover for Blogophilia 23 is my feeble attempt at deriving inspiration from Skatterbrain. I try… It's hard to believe a whole month has passed by since the last Blogophilia post. This month's mix has songs featured on the Dadada by the Charming Youngsters, The Red River, Wildlife, Lykee Li, The Rest, and The Foreign Films. There are also new tracks from the Decemberists, Say Hi, The Heavy, The Tallest Man on Earth, [...]

A month ago, I was heaping praises upon The Charming Youngsters , who are a local act to Greenville, NC. Led by Nolan Smock, the Charming Youngsters have quickly become one of the more popular bands in the area. Their newest single, Walls , is an up-tempo pop tune with deeper intentions; as it ponders modern existence and the meanings we ascribe to life. I like it, and it was the highlight of the show I attended recently. Give it your ear: The Charming Youngsters - Walls (Demo) [mp3] Check out their EP, [...]

Elf Power at The Tipsy Teapot Last Friday marked the start of fall break at East Carolina, which makes Greenville a bit of a ghost town. Fortunately, there were enough folks around to enjoy the show at the Tipsy Teapot that night. It was a real treat as local favorites, the Charming Youngsters and the Gospel Years opened for indie rock icons, Elf Power . I came away that evening feeling good about our local music scene, especially for the Charming Youngsters who [...]

We have some really great shows to round out the spring. I am especially looking forward to seeing Casiotone for the Painfully Alone . Check it out, and support the Greenville Music Scene. Artists who are passing through should try to connect with the Tipsy Teapot and/or the Spazzatorium . While we are a college town, we still have 85,000 year round residents, and you might draw out some folks who wouldn't normally come out during the school year. Gen-Xers like good music too... [...]
