The Alialujah Choir is Adam Shearer and Alia Farah of Weinland , and Adam Selzer of Norfolk & Western and M. Ward . The Portland, Oregon outfit have delivered a delicious album that radiates sincerity and poignancy, without resorting to the type of earnest claptrap which has blighted the scene these past few years. If you're a fan of well crafted folk/pop with gorgeous harmonies, this band is for you! Check out this clip, the first song from their first ever live show, in their hometown:

Is it cold out? Do the nights still feel long and dark? Are you troubled by a sense of foreboding? I missed this very fine album when it was released last year, and only really decided to hunt it down after the Quietus made it their #4 record of 2011. Bobby Krlic's extraordinarily atmospheric record weaves together droning, rumbling strings, rattling percussion and the occasional haunting piece of choral singing ('The Fall', for example). There's also lots of silence, the space in which the sounds happen. The name, and the general feel and look of the [...]

let's start this week in the classic way
By far one of the more glorious creations of the last decade has been the banding together of the L.A. Ladies Choir, a collection of some of the finest ladies Los Angeles has to offer. Coming from various parts of L.A.'s cultural nexus, the group has featured members of Lavender Diamond, Moonrats, Black Black, Warpaint, He's My Brother She's My Sister, The Finches, and Stone Darling along with

New from Choirs of Young Believers , the first single from the band's forthcoming album which will be out in February.
thedailylurch : James Blake & Bon Iver - Fall Creek Boys Choir The new collaboration from James Blake and Bon Iver just went up online. Sounds like the balance of production and writing was heavily held up on James Blakes end. He also seems to be the one promoting it with the video being on his Youtube channel and him being the one that did the BBC interview with Huw Stephens. The two met at SXSW earlier this year and have conversed since via email.

Active Child - You Are All I See by FILTER Magazine
[ download ] [tweetmeme] Loch Lomond 's "Elephants & Little Girls" is built upon a base of maudlin strings, acoustic guitar, and dew-dropped glockenspiel. It's an exposition for a strange tale where vocalist Ritchie Young suggests a ride on an elephant (respectfully exotic) and subsequently on a little girl (outright strange). The lyrics "We'll go somewhere warmer / We'll go somewhere new" offer an escapist promise, yet even as the chant "Now we're having fun / now we're living life" begins, the mood doesn't exactly lift. The song never promises [...]

I had to take a business trip last week, which included flying into Minnesota in sub zero weather on a small little "puddle-jumper" plane (while Otis Redding and Buddy Holly flashed through my mind) and then driving 150 miles in a snowstorm. At night. With no lights on the highway. And the snow flying right into our windshield, making the experience much like traveling into hyperspace. The driving experience for several hours was very much like this: as cars were crashed on the highway embankments. The trip [...]
'Tis the season to use the word ' tis . And for advertisers to attempt a new twist on the holiday commercial cliché choir. Here we've got bras versus beer bottles. What's your fave? The La Senza lingerie Cup Size Choir even has an online component where you can use your keyboard to play the girls . Bonus points. VS. Grolsch has assembled "some of the world's leading [...]

Click image to download full album Song: Ingrid Michaelson - Creep (Radiohead Cover) "Ingrid Michaelson - Creep (Radiohead Cover)" What's so good? Covering a Radiohead song is pretty hit or miss - an artist can either totally blunder the beauty that is Radiohead, or they can amplify and compliment the haunting quality of the music. With today's Song of the Day and the bonus track accompanying it, we have two (very different!) examples of how Radiohead's "Creep" can be modified. [...]
For those of you revisiting this post, it originally had School of Seven Bells remix of Active Child's "I'm In Your Church At Night." I apparently was given the wrong track, and was asked to replace it. So here it is! For those of you reading this for the first time, Lefse Records is [...]
I just heard the choirboy-turned-indie pop musician Pat Grossi (aka Active Child) for the first time last night, and his EP Curtis Lane has already claimed victory over my mp3 player and will most likely reign supreme for the next several weeks. To top off this new find, Lefse Records is soon to release an [...]
[ download ] [tweetmeme] We've all done it: you're in the shower, just finished with scrubbing yourself clean, and right before you turn the water flow off you swing the temperature all the way to the cold side. When the water hits, icy and penetrating, it's a refreshing burst, a thrilling change. That's how this track from twenty-one year old Californian Will Wiesenfeld makes me feel-both stimulated and soothed. Under the Baths banner, Wiesenfeld makes bewildering beats and skewed, perplexing pop on his debut, Cerulean (released in June [...]
The newest teasery-trailery thing for the next Fincher movie The Social Network hit the web yesterday. I can't really tell yet if the movie is going to be worth a damn as there's an unnecessary drama slathered over every inch of the trailer. Ultimately, we'll be sitting down to watch a movie about an empire not yet toppled. Don't you really need hindsight to craft a biopic like this that brings anything to the table besides sensationalism? I am interested in the cast though...Jesse Eisenberg, a man I once described as [...]
