An eclectic mix to complement IQ's Flashing Lights mix-CD. Here's what "they" had to say: "It's all the cuts that didn't make the final version of Flashing Lights CD you can nab here … Don't expect any jingling bells or ho ho ho's, but do expect some Hudson Mohawke, Ludacris, Starky and much more. A perfect blend of electronica, hip hop and abstract beats you will love but won't be able to categorise, which is exactly why this is our official Christmas present to you all." [...]

Far too many people compete to be the best house on their block as it pertains to Christmas lights and/or holiday decorations. Due to not owning a house and also renting in NYC, that's not an option for the Smiths. Still, I can understand the "Griswold-ian" notion that having the best display in the neighborhood might make us seem more festive or as if we care a little more than everyone else. Hell no, my friends, not this year. If you can battle through Eric Johnson 's "Cliffs of Dover" without using the outdoor screen, you're [...]

Our hot water heater, which is down in the basement, has been leaking for the past two days and consequently we've had to turn off the water in order to stop the flow. We can turn it on briefly to take a shower and do other basic things but until it's fixed, we have to pretty much leave it off. The plumber's been here once already and unfortunately has to come back again today, as the fellow he sent to do the job the first time didn't do it right. In fact, while [...]
I'm not sure how much music is coming out of Frostburg, MD but I'm guessing it's virtually non existent (that's just me talking with my big city mindset). Of course that was until I heard The Christmas Lights . The name doesn't exactly spark a lot of interest (at least for me), but once I pressed play those ideas quickly faded as I was transported into a world of analog synths, dreamy choruses, and cold winters. Kenny Tompkins aka The Christmas Lights creates music that could easily fall into that Postal Service category with his new album Walk [...]
Tonight is fairly slow for music. I'm guessing it's just a lull before the onslaught of shows about to hit at the end of the week. One show does stand out this evening and deserves a mention. Cotton Jones (Michael Nau of Page France) plays the Ottobar here in Baltimore. His music is truly wonderful and the live show is bound to be stellar. Opening fro him are The Christmas Lights who, despite the odd name, play some genuinely solid music. The Owls Go will also be performing as well. Enjoy! mp3: Cotton Jones - [...]

Here are some photos I took from my favorite place in the world.
Picking up where Grandaddy left off, The Christmas Lights serve up a unique mix of experimental 8-bit sugar-pop in odd-yet-dance-friendly time signatures. Check out these two tracks from the group's recent full-length debut, Walk Like A Human. MP3s: The Christmas Lights - "Show Your Teeth" The Christmas Lights - "The Water Is ...

The Christmas Lights is the brainchild of 26 year-old Kenny Tompkins. Tompkins has worked as singer/songwriter and producer for several projects including The Trend and The Royal Army as well as recording and touring as a solo artist. In 2007 The Christmas Lights released a split with Baltimore-based duo Emil titled 10 Paces . This record was received positively by independent press and fans alike for its mix of 8-bit sugar-pop and experimental noise construction. The recent full-length debut, Walk Like A Human (Pro-Gravity Records/RARC), is a mix of ambiance, [...]

Nothing really going on around here today except cleaning out the 'ol email. Of course, this means I plow through veritable mountains of crap and serve up stuff that is at least marginally OK. No guarantees, though. A few of these are top notch (Vic & Elf Power, A. Armada, Gnarls) and the others you'll have to decide for yourself because I'm on the fence. Some of this stuff is a few months old, some of it brand new. What do you care, anyway? They're free. Have fun. MP3: The Christmas Lights-Show Your Teeth [...]
