Here's the third (and final, you'll be pleased to hear) round up of the year's music. Or at least the year's music that I could give a toss about. Parts One and Two here and here . The Albums You Wish The Artist Would Re-Record As A Solo Acoustic Album Ron Sexsmith – Long Player Late Bloomer When I saw Ron Sexsmith perform "Get In Line" on Later…. I was smitten. Not with his looks, of course (he's hardly Feist, [...]
Welcome to Monday Threesome! This week, The Clientele's (@theclientele) classic pop/folk with psychedelic influences is the basis for our theme. While the three bands below each create their own unique sound within that realm, they clearly work with similar muses, and their music is perfect for either autumn's rain slicked streets or winter's snow covered landscapes. House on Fire - The Clientele // Buy English psych-poppers The Clientele have been a wonderful band to watch develop. Beginning with [...]
Midterms finally came to an end; and when we collectively wandered bleary-eyed out of the depths of Lau, we realized autumn was upon us. Just as we began wrapping ourselves up in jackets and scarves and digging into our favorite pumpkin-flavored goodies, we found the leaves had changed and fallen and mid-November was here already. We were late for fall. But a few leaves are still clinging to the branches, and autumn's got at least one more weekend of clear blue skies and crisp temperatures left in it. WGTB suggests you savor it while you can, and we made you [...]
Black Partridge comprises two brothers from Illinois. The duo have a unique sound that fuses lo-fi rock and pop with caressing sentiments of shoegaze and dream-pop. The older brother, Vito, plays the bass guitar while Mick takes over vocals and guitar. While the pair has yet to release an album, they have four songs available [...]
Amor de Días - Season of Light from Merge Records on Vimeo . The Clientele/Amor de Dias frontman Alasdair MacLean directed this one himself, a much-needed reminder that dude was evoking sepia tones and faded photographs while your favorite chillwave band was taking high school bong hits. The song, as expected, is quietly lovely. ( Street of the Love of Days is out now on Merge )

Another watery October evening in an east midlands town. Shadows lengthen and dead-eyed men with trophy dogs stand in weak pools of flourescence thrown from shop windows; blue plastic carrier bags straining at the handles, lumpen with cans. The smell of leaf smoke is carried up the canal, past an old houseboat, and into the town streets where it is smothered by the scent of curry and battered fish. Children chant from a distant concrete space... Down by the river, down by the sea, Johnny broke a bottle and [...]

Backed by the superb pop of The Clientele , "Come and Play Jingle" introduces psychedelia to kids around the world. Thank god this show exists. From Yo Gabba Gabba : " Everyone needs someone to play with, even an orange and a pear! In this musical jingle from the season 2 episode, Games, with animation by Merijn & Jurriaan Hos and music by The Clientele, let's make all sorts of new friends and play together! "

Here's another "half mix." Some of my favorites include Dominos by Big Pink , Lovesick Teenagers by Bear in Heaven , Early Warnings by Foreign Born , Beachcomber by Real Estate (one of my favorite tracks from 2009), and Wide-eyed, Legless by Laura Veirs . Jake Ryan had a HD disk crash this week, Tyler's computer was out for repair. It returned on Monday, the same day he had to have his car towed to a shop. All of this results in a REPEAT! YEAH! WOO-HOO. (Oh, you're so lucky. What have you done to deserve such gifts?) Jake Ryan joins us via phone from Shermer, Illinois. The Ladybug Transistor formed in Brooklyn in 1995, and frontman Gary Olson has been the band's sole constant member. Clutching Stems (Merge) is the group's seventh album and the first to be made following the 2007 asthma-related death of drummer San Fadyl. Since, the band's lineup has solidified behind Olson, featuring Kyle Forester, Julia Rydholm, [...]
The Clientele are one of those bands that seem to float around, occasionally releasing records to a small, but loving fanbase, that never get much attention from the hype merchants. You dip into their records from time to time, savour their deliciously drowsy songs, which feel like dozing under a large sycamore tree on a warm, muggy day, before reluctantly moving back to something a little more lively. Today, spurred on by watching a video of them on YouTube, I decided to pop back into their back catalogue, and spent much of the day listening to their [...]

Alasdair MacLean of The Clientele has a new project, Amor de Días and boy is it good! Like his other band, this one borders on bossa nova. But rather than pop, MacLean instead flirts with folk. "Wild Winter Trees" is soft and beautiful with a lightly strummed guitar and calming vocals. Similarly, the video is simple, showing grainy footage a family playing in the fields. Surprisingly, the other half of this duo is also a known figure. At least, if you're a [...]
Amor de Días - Late Mornings from Merge Records on Vimeo . Amor de Dias is, of course, the new Latin-tinged side-project of the Clientele frontman Alasdair MacLean. Here's "Late Mornings," a brisk but lovely example of the group's psych-pop sound which comes alongside a collage-art clip you should show your friend the graphic designer. The band plays the Satellite on June 4; Street of the Love of Days is out now.

Amor de Dias (translation - Love For Days) is a new project from Alasdair MacLean from The Clientele and Lupe Núñez-Fernández of indie-pop duo Pipas and they make some really pretty sounding songs. The CD/LP come out next week via Merge. Check out an mp3 for "Bunhill Fields" below and the animated video for "Late Mornings" directed by Xana Kudrjavcev-DeMilner after the jump. Early last year, I posted a mix of songs that used the most iconic and recognizable drum beat in pop music history, the Phil Spector-penned / Ronettes-performed "Be My Baby" intro. That led to two more mixes (which we lovingly call "Boom! Boom boom, cha!" after that striking drum sound) bringing the total up to about 60 songs worth of "Be My Baby" beats. Just when I thought I had exhausted the subject a new crop of songs from this year have started popping up using the beat, whether it be from the indie pop stylings of Cults and Pains of Being Pure At Heart or the [...]

If The Clientele embarked on a summer surfing regimen here in Southern California and wrote an album around that experience then I imagine it would sound like Indiana's Triptides . "Shadows" is taken from the band's new Tropical Dreams EP, available over at Bandcamp via Beachtapes . Kudos to No Modest Bear for turning me onto these guys. [...]
