Seeing Vetiver at IOTA for me will always recall the first time I ever saw them live, back in 2004. Back then, Andy Cabic and his band came to IOTA as part of a package show that is now considered somewhat legendary around these parts. With a line-up featuring a more hushed version of Vetiver , a spritely Joanna Newsom, and headlined by everyone's favorite beardo, Devendra Banhart, this was both a critic's and a fan's dreamteam showcase of California indie folk-pop. And since then, Andy has stayed on the road pretty constantly. He's maintained a pretty [...]

I can't believe its already been three years since Sunderland, England's Field Music went on a self-imposed hiatus. Well, to make up for lost time, they've just released Measure , a 20 track double album which hit stores this past tuesday. KCRW has put the album up for streaming here , but for a quick listen, check out the song they previewed recently at Stereogum . Its called ' Each Time Is A New Time ' and upon my many listens, I'm thinking that [...]

So I just listened to Bonfires on The Heath (Merge Records - purchase ), the new album by The Clientele , and immediately needed another cup of coffee. This isn't a bad thing (for me at least) but listening to any album by this band immediately makes me want to fall right to sleep. I work a lot. Sleep is good. My only concern is that seeing them live will have the same effect and people will assume I'm narcoleptic. See you at the NYC date?? I'll be in my jammies. Check [...]

...I think there's some snow coming—anybody hear anything? (I kid.) But if you're reading us from anyplace outside of the DC/Baltimore area, that header's right—we're getting two feet of snow at minimum. (Which is fine with me. I got some records to listen to.) We're closing shop a bit early today but make sure you're back here on Monday when we kick off our Record Store Day [...]

With the threat of severe winter weather looming tonight, I wanted to take this moment and quote Tony Kornheiser and say: "Let's get happy people!" Again we're bringin' you some of the talent reppin' the Bay Area lately. It seems like their talent pool is pretty rich and diverse. Today, let's check out Vetiver, shall we? Good. A sunny song for a dreary day, Vetiver brings a folk-pop feel from the land where folk and pop live side-by-side, holding hands. You can check [...]

A friend of mine has been having a hard time lately getting to sleep. I first offered to help her by calling every night before bedtime and talking to her for awhile, as my affection-less monotone can put anyone to sleep within a couple minutes. After mutually deeming that to be a stupid idea, I went with my second option: a mix CD of quiet (but not boring) songs from my favorite bands. Here's what I came up with: 1) Micah P. Hinson - Seems Almost Impossible 2) Tindersticks - Until The [...]

I'm going to go ahead and assume that most people don't know what my favorite music consists of. Since we're as new as can be here at VS and background is important, I've decided to name off my top 10 favorite albums. Now, I know you'll probably skip down to the top 5 anyway, but choosing just 10 was difficult enough. When you love music as much as I do, you'll find that just doing 5 isn't as easy as you think. So without further ado... 10 [...]

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars In a year that offered lots of mediocre albums, 2009 had so many new records that it was hard to digest them all in due time for reviews. Yet, I always intended to touch on this album, as I've loved The Crayon Fields since Animal Bells came out a few years back. "Mirrorball" made the list of our Top 50 songs of 2009, and it still draws a lot of power, months after it first [...]
