There's nothing better than listening to some chicks with serious attitude (especially chicks that would kick my ass for calling them chicks) playing with reckless abandon, fast and furious, cutting to the chase without all the instrumental solos that leave you daydreaming. Atlanta band The Coathangers fits the bill perfectly. The foursome is set to release their self-titled debut on September 4th, and its 17 tracks weighing in at 31 minutes reminds one of a Ramones album: no playing games, it's all business. In this case, playfully perverse (observe songs titled Don't [...]

Saturday night I went to Lenny's for their one year anniversary show. Unfortunately Atlas Sound , Bradford Cox of Deerhunter 's solo/side project, did not show up and Psychic Heart 's mini-set didn't start until after 11:30pm, but at least Snowden kicked ass as always. Stickfigure Distribution has just reissued their self titled EP debut release. Here's a sample: Snowden : Snowden : Good News Buy Snowden Here [...]
shut the fuck up don't touch my shit www.thecoathangers.com I've just heard of The Coathangers and already I love them. They're from Atlanta (a scene which I feel is somewhat lacking in the cool girl bands category these days so it's exciting). I like that they call themselves feminists and I like that they swear in their song titles and I like that they have a song about Tanya Harding and frankly, I think they ROCK. Check out [...]
welcome to the first installment of "the same 5 questions with..." the first willing participant to take on these 5, albeit very lame questions is montreal, canada's bad flirt - who play the treehouse in lawrenceville, ga on saturday evening. the six members that make up bad flirt conjure up a sound that reminds me of [...]

There's a few changes here that you should take notice of. First, I've added a few more links over there ( <------- ) and I only link to stuff I read myself so you can trust me on them. Also, I've changed the archiving setting so only the most recent 10 posts will appear on the front page. This will help things load a LOT faster. Keep in mind that there's still a TON of free, active MP3s available throughout the archives so dig, dig dig. In the very near future this entire site will [...]

The Coathangers have really pretty much exploded everywhere this past year which is mindbogglingly phenomenal for a band that literally formed a year ago. Loved by some, utterly hated by others and admired by me this is exactly the type of band I like to see get popular. On one hand I totally dig the screamy , total punk-n-wave sound they put out and on the other hand I know how totally befuddling and frustrating their popularity must be for the hundreds of posturing, preening alt-rock poseur boys in the Atlanta [...]
We're using the Toughlove method. If Wendi wants to be out there with all those rock and roll types, what can we do about it? It's her life, after all. We'll welcome her home with open arms when she's ready. You have to let them go sometime . They have to find themselves. You know how it is. It's a stage we all went through, every one of us, it's just different for them. Heck, I knew a guy in high school who listened to The Sex Pistols and stuff. Strange guy, got in a little trouble after graduation, [...]
These aren't necessarily new, they're just what I happen to be listening to today. Enjoy! The Coathangers - Parking Lot . I missed this group at one of my favorite venues, Maxwell's , earlier this month. Their self titled debut comes out September 4th. In the meantime, you can purchase select tracks off their myspace page here . I think they have an amazing energy and are very kickass gals. The Most Serene Republic - Sherry [...]
This relatively new band from the ATL are my kind of punk. They are more alt, but they still have the punk feel. Very simple structure, 4/4 mundane pulse, and some screaming. What is new, and great, in these guys is the use of synth. It has an almost Postal Service feel. The song Parking Lot is super short, but worth the listen. The Coathangers are one of the most liberal punk bands I have heard in a while. They came up with their name on the way to an anti-bush rally, and it symbolizes their stance on abortion. (Wait [...]

Here's some interesting stuff I found in my inbox. Have a listen, or two. from Afternoon Records The Poison Control Center have been hanging from chandeliers and doing somersaults around the country for the last six years. Releasing numerous EPs and Singles, garnering national press for their explosive live shows, been featured on NPR, played the CMJ festival twice, opened for their idols, headlined festivals, and even had Max Weinberg sit in on drums for a show. They are floored to be [...]
They're from Atlanta, their hot and they rock. What else do you need to know? They are the band The Coathangers, who bring a slice of humor and energy to the table, with their catchy brand of pop-punk. They named...

"… womanly post-punk that evokes pre dub-era Slits sounds." – Creative Loafing "…simple punk-rock songs that are fun, catchy, vulgar and perverse… simply it's awesome." – The Yellow Stereo The Coathangers are newcomers to Atlanta's vibrant punk, pop and experimental music scene, but the group has risen quickly through the ranks to become one of the city's most talked about acts. Since July of 2006 Julia Kugel (guitar/vocals), Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals), Candice Jones (keyboard/vocals) and Meredith Franco (bass/vocals) have hammered out a bat cave crunk-punk dirge that [...]

Had been hoping to post more this weekend but got sidetracked by the real life. That'll happen I suppose. Couple observations from this weekend: *It's not a stereotype that people from Illinois are bad drivers. I had to drive Felicia up north to work this morning and was cut off by at least two drivers, saw a couple others driving recklessly, and was tailgated by another convertible because I wasn't going fast enough in the right lane. And yes, all of those cars had Illinois license plates. They come up to Northern Wisconsin to stay at [...]

Due to the passing of former Girlschool guitarist Kelly Johnson, I decided to make this week's Friday 5 all about girl rockers. It just seemed to be a fitting way to pay tribute to Kelly and Girlschool, as they probably paved the way for all of these bands in one way or another. MP3: Sahara Hotnights - Visit To Vienna MP3: The Coathangers - Parking Lot [...]
