Every edition of Coldcut/Ninja Tune's Solid Steel Radio Show is a treat. Its not always exclusively downtempo music, but they always feature a different selection of downtempo styles. The last show I really enjoyed ( HERE ) focused on downtempo trip hop with some glitch, and this show is completely different but equally entertaining - featuring funk and soul, with a bit of Amon Tobin, trip hop and electronic sounds to finish it off. This show features the "godfather" funk fusion Chuck Brown, along with artists he's influenced, including Nas, Chris Turner, the Beatles, and more.

When I bought the 1997 Coldcut CD Let Us Play , one of the most intriguing tracks (on an album stuffed full of intriguing tracks) featured one Salena Saliva. I'd never heard (of) her prior to this, but the track, Noah's Toilet , was knowing, aloof and sonically inventive. Plus, it featured a drawling, bored, clearly posh and very articulate female voice, and long-time readers will know I'm a total sucker for these (cf. DJ Food gets done over by Autechre, in 1996. DJ Food was started by Coldcut's Matt Black and Jonathan More together with Patrick Carpenter (aka PC) and Kevin Foakes (Strictly Kev). Coldcut later withdrew from the project. The featured track is taken from the Refried Food double 123. This was a mix of tracks remixed from earlier releases and new ones. This is one of the new tracks. It uses DJ Food's experimental hip hop as a jumping off point for Autechre's more electronic adventures.
