Today is definitely chillier than the last few days, but it's sunny so I'll take that and be glad. Gracie and I will be hitting the dump today, her favorite stop of all. It even beats Agway where she gets to shop with me and have a few treats. My house still needs to be decorated, but I have a Christmas timetable starting tonight with the cards. My second box of cards arrived a couple of days ago so no more excuses. After that I need to buy the tree and then decorate the house. I'm thinking a [...]

Throughout my weeks and months I collect songs by relatively unknown bands that are deserving of hype. I try to post a collection of these songs every week but some times life gets crazy and I don't get around to it for a couple weeks. The common theme of this week's Hype Device is that Pitchfork has stolen my thunder on 4 out of 5 of these songs. I made this Hype Device a couple of weeks ago and in the interim, P4K reviewed 4 of these songs. Damn them to hell, I say. [...]

Last year, The Color Wheels released one of the finest debut albums of 2008. A whimsical marriage of '60s melodies and '90s alternative, the husband/wife duo of Jon (vocals/guitar) and Psalm (drums, backing vocals) Sebastian from Poughkeepsie, New York produced a catchy power pop album brimming with jangly guitars and candy coated harmonies, reminiscent of early Matthew Sweet. Released on Viper Bite Records, songs such as “Green Means Go” and “The Pirate [...]

Jon Sebastian is good at writing pop songs. Good thing too, because he seems to write a lot of them. In addition to fronting Paper The Operator , Sebastian also fronts the jangletastic The Color Wheels with his drummer-wife, Psalm , and even has a solo project under his own name. With the four-piece Paper the Operator on their debut Solemn Boyz EP, Sebastian continues to write more of the catchy, Teenage Fanclub -esque tunes coated in late-80’s jangle that those of us familiar with his work have [...]

First, make these, which are seriously the best biscuits ever in the whole history of the universe. No, I'm not exaggerating. Hyacinth’s Everything Cookies Biscuits 1 1/2 cups butter 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 cups brown sugar 4 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla 4 1/4 cups flour 4 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/3 cups quick oats 1 teaspoon salt 3 cups granola 1 1/2 cups chopped pecans 1 1/2 cups raisins 1 1/2 cups apricots Cream butter [...]
Like a combination of Wolfie, The Wonders (or the Oneders, whatever you like), Matthew Sweet, and other such sugary sweet indie-pop rock confections, Poughkeepsie, NY’s husband and wife duo The Color Wheels will have you happily bouncing off the walls. With Jon Sebastian on guitar and vocals and wife Psalm handling the drums, the songs on their self-titled debut are so irresistibly charming and cute it’s almost sick. It kinda reminds me of being newlyweds, holding hands, and kissing in public. The songs are uncomplicated and straightforward but the catchy-as-hell sing-along melodies are damn near perfect. [...]
The story of The Color Wheels [Myspace] started with a simple request. One day Pslam Sebastian asked her husband, Jon, to teacher her to play the drums. Jon agreed and without realizing it they formed a band at that very first lesson. Jon handles the singing, guitar and keyboards, while Pslam chips in with [...] [[ This is a content summary only. It seems as though ever since Alex Chilton wrote that classic adolescent-anthem “Thirteen”, a select group of bands and artists have been trying to tap back into that sound and revel in the early-teenage innocence in which hand-over-bra is still a big deal and you have to sneak out of the house to suck face after dark. It’s that beautiful twilight sound that’s arguably served as the root of the entire twee-rock genre and inspired like-minded bands The Softies , Teenage Fanclub , and now The Color Wheels , to pursue the musical course of [...]

We love the boy-girl (husband-wife, really) duo from upstate New York, The Color Wheels . A year ago, they played our first curated concert, "blogger's delight" , at the Knitting Factory here and were probably one of the nicest sets of people we've ever had the pleasure of being around. It's no wonder than that they create infectious, young love yearning, summer's-never-over songs that we think all of you should be into ( they've been in our "emerging" category as well, natch). Well, they're coming back downstate to NYC this weekend, stopping here on a week-long tour [...]
The Color Wheels [MySpace], the husband-and-wife duo behind the infectious "Green Means Go", will be playing an 8-gig tour starting this Friday in support of their new self-titled...

I reviewed The Color (how that spelling plays havoc with a British spellchecker!) Wheels' enjoyable self titled début album almost a year ago now. The band, who hail from Poughkeepsie, have been receiving good reviews for the album and have now announced an eight date US tour. If the album is anything to go by they will be worth catching if you are in any of these places: Nov 7 - New Paltz, NY @ Bacchus Nov 8 - Brooklyn, NY @ Glasslands Nov 9 - Philadelphia, PA @ Khyber Nov 10 - Washington, [...]
As I've said more times than you care to remember, I love bloggal archives. So the other night I was prowling around the early days' of one of my favorite blogs, Milk Milk Lemonade, and found "Lloyd Christmas," a pure little number by Oslovians, American Suitcase. I was so intrigued that a simple click took me to AS's website, where I unpacked the first two songs below. Wowser (if I might wax

So, yeah. Monday night was the first time that the culture of me had any involvement in actual concert- making and not so much concert- going . If you've been following along at all over the last two months, you'd have known that the Knitting Factory's newest weekly party, Blogger's Delight , has been hosted by the likes of David Bruno , Disconap, Palms Out Sounds and Idolator , to name a few. Upcoming shows will be pimped by the likes of The Music Slut , subinev and Jinners.com. [...]

As far as charming bands go, The Color Wheels have to be right up near the top of the list. Not only do the husband and wife duo from Poughkeepsie, New York sing short sweet garage-pop songs about relationships, camping trips, pirate ships, and rocking your world, but they also do so with a sense of earnestness that's sorely missing in many an irony-laden indie band. The guitars are appropriately loud and fuzzy when they need to be, the pop melodies could happily sit alongside any decent Lemonheads tune, and singer/guitarist Jon Sebastian - who not only [...]
