Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive Sweden is famous for two wildly different styles of music: death metal and indie pop. Although the Stockholm-based Concretes play the latter, singer Lisa Milberg doesn't much care for the corollary genre descriptor often foisted on the band. "When people said we were making twee music, I could never hear that myself," Milberg tells Spinner. "I will never be able to understand what we sound like in other people's [...]

Sometimes you just need a cool, simple groove to make an evening feel like an evening. I guess it’s a fitting thing that the featured song here is titled “Good Evening.” The Concretes have been around since the mid-90′s, and now they’re back with a new album, WYWH. “Good Evening” has been around since August, but I figure since the album’s out now, it makes sense to post it. There’s nothing amazingly spectacular about “Good Evening,” but like I said above, it has such a simple groove that I can’t help but keep listening. [...]

Det har gått alldeles för lång tid sedan vi sist hänfördes av Christian Niva och hans fina svenska dreamwave. Förhoppningsvis betyder det dock att han finslipar sin kommande EP Feverish dreams till absolut perfektion. Medan vi väntar kommer här NIVA s strålande remix på The Concretes underbara singel All day The Concretes - All day (Niva remix)

When Heath Ledger won the Academy Award for The Dark Knight Returns , it was an honour that primarily recognised his death - the extinguishing of a burgeoning acting talent - rather than his role in that particular movie. While that performance wasn’t necessarily the best that year, it did excel in one particular area: Ledger took a character so closely associated with an existing performance from a notable actor (ie Jack Nicholson) and in one classy swoop, he deleted the collective memory of that performance and replaced it with his own take. It’s a feat few [...]

Steve Gullick With 2010 tasked largely to the production and promotion of Burning and Special Moves , their aural and visual live summation of their first decade and half of existence, Mogwai will enter 2011 with eyes pointed straight ahead. The Scots have released released details of their seventh studio album, which will carry the typically wonderful title of Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will . There really is something to be said for being a mostly-instrumental band who never has to sing [...]

Polaroids From the Web Some Swedish revival Negli ultimi giorni ci sono state finalmente un po' di novità interessanti per l'indiepop scandinavo. Ve le riassumo in breve: - Su Tram7, il nuovo singolo degli Acid House Kings Are we lovers or are we friends? - Dal sito della Labrador, torna anche l'altra band di Johan Angergård, i Club 8 con Closer Now [...]

It's back! Chicago's top winter music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows returns for its seventh year from January 12 - January 16, 2011. TNK has become one of Chicago's most anticipated musical events because not only is it in a dead time, musically and weather-wise, but it serves up the best of both national and local acts. A quick glance at the initial schedule looks promising thus far. There are big names such as Besnard Lakes and Freddie Gibbs performing alongside up-and-coming new local groups such as psych outfit A Lull [...]

"All Day" -By The Concretes . “Apparently the Concretes are embracing that whole 80’s thing” shrieked my not quite enigmatic contact and Sweden’s answer to Gok Wan , Andres Panders. Despite my offer of copious amounts of alcohol he resolutely refused to shed any more light on this somewhat sweeping statement, and rather bafflingly seemed to think that continually tapping his nose in a conspiratorial manner was somehow endearing and in no way irritating. But what on earth [...]

This Southern California home by Sebastian Mariscal Studio has an outstanding appeal to it. The relationship of wood to concrete is seemingly perfect. The arrangement of rectangular forms on the frontside of the house is also the perfect way to accent the wood. By Antti Laitinen MP3: The Concretes - "Good Evening" In the center of the ocean, you look up to see clouds pulled over the bright blue sky. Sitting in a small rickety row boat, you move with the fluctuation of waves, rising and falling above and below the mark of the horizon. The sea is a mix of dark shades, appearing rather monotonous. You look up to the sky and meet a swirl of colors as sunlight and blue sky pour [...]

It has been 3 years since The Concretes brought out their last release but they are back in November with new album 'WYWH - Wish You Were Here'. To coincide with the new album the band have launched a new website; the cunningly titled Wish You Were Here encourages fans to share their holidays photos [...]

Swedes never fail to deliver. Staples in my essential list include Dungen , Refused , and Fireside just to name a few. This time around, it's The Concretes , making a reappearance after a three-year hiatus with the release of WYWH . Lisa Milberg slightly whispers the lyrics over the disco-infused beats, adding a layer of melancholy to these indie pop tracks. The retro feel of the album creates the [...]

Frank Yang Sufjan Stevens doesn't make it easy. In the five years since his breakthrough Illinois album, he's managed to be quite prolific without actually crafting a proper follow-up, instead releasing collections of outtakes , rerecording old records , compiling Christmas gifts and staging multimedia odes on expressways . The only sign he was working on something weightier was a surprise club tour last year that allowed he and his band to jam out new material alongside old favourites, but [...]

Such is the kudos conglomerated about Swedish musical output that phrases such as Swedophile now garner approximately 579 results on the world wide web's fave search engine rhyming with frugal, and eight-piece melodramatic disco darlings The Concretes have certainly injected impetus into such cultural findings. Returning after something of a heavy artistic lay-off, the inconclusively entitled WYWH glistens like the Northern Lights, were they encased in a bittersweet sugar coating, plucked from blackened skies, and devoured apathetically. Opener Good Evening is a glorious, throbbing reintroduction into the subconscious-stirring frigidity purveyed throughout their expansive discography, from their iconic eponymous [...]

Sure to be one of the underdog success stories of the year, The Concretes return on November 8 with their fourth studio album WYWH . From what first began fifteen years ago with three school friends Lisa Milberg, Maria Eriksson and the now departed Victoria Bergsman, The Concretes have steadily blossomed into an eight piece band, quietly becoming one of Sweden's most treasured exports. It's long been said that 20032s self-titled debut was the bands crowning glory. Eleven perfectly crafted pop nuggets, awash in melancholia and sixties fuzz; it was the sound of a band finally [...]

Frank Yang There's hiatuses and there's hiatuses. The first being the sort where a group needs a break from one another to recharge their batteries, try out new things and eventually, return to one another refreshed and ready for another go; the latter being code for "we've split up but don't want to field questions about so just leave us alone". For whatever reason, though it was officially for reason the first, when Belle & Sebastian announced they were going on a break following 20062s The Life Pursuit , [...]
