The Concretes accurately describe their latest release, WYWH , as a “dreamy, ethereal disco-influenced” album. I shared an mp3 of "All Day" last month and have since discovered that the entire album is just as sultry and atmospheric. The Concretes' music blends mellow electro-pop melodies with ambient beats beneath new lead singer Lisa Milberg's whisper soft vocals. The internet age has made the desire for information so immediate that how you release something is often more interesting than the actual thing being released. Luckily for Noise Pop, their lineup appears to be strong as they recently finished posting riddles on Twitter and Facebook to unveil their bookings. So, who did they get? Yo La Tengo is one sure thing. Telekinesis looks to be the answer to the guy making a chair float, though he also looks really tall if that means anything. Other apparent participants are Dan Deacon, Ted [...]

Fingers and toes all but entirely gelid, the Balearic component of Oxford's Blessing Force Scene Chad Valley is aurally idyllic tonight, his tropiphoric wistfulness alleviating minor frostbite and enlivening flaccid limbs, if only vaguely. Portuguese Solid Summer drops around six months prematurely, although when its chillwave leitmotif keys chisel their way into the inner recesses, scouring the dankest corners of your cerebral matter, there they'll reside in all probability until Primavera Sound at least... Anything recalls Friendly Fires' Ed MacFarlane swirling about to Wham in an ecstasy-induced frenzy in Ibiza, whilst Up and Down is James Yuill injected [...]

Frank Yang Some, like myself , felt that Stornoway and their debut album Beachcomber's Windowsill were the perfect soundtrack to Summer. Others find their rich yet subtle orchestral pop to be more Autumnal than anything else. For the Oxford, England quartet's visit on Tuesday night, the seasonal backdrop neither - instead, they made their Canadian debut on a wet and dreary eve right on the cusp of Winter. With them was a face who'd visited many times before, though not in his current guise - [...]

Earlier this year Deer Tick released their third full-length record The Black Dirt Sessions , an intimate and personal album thanks in part of lead singer John McCauley's extremely confessional lyrics. McCauley will now get a chance to showcase those tunes in a different setting from Deer Tick's usual rowdy and raucous shows, as he has scheduled an eight-date acoustic tour. McCauley will be joined by his band mate Ian O'Neil on guitar and vocals for a string [...]

Whatever you want to call WYWH - an experiment, a change in direction, or even a fresh start from a new look group, it works. The Concretes - WYWH (Something In Construction) 8/11/2010 is a post from: Music News, Album Reviews, Live Reviews, New Music

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive The Concretes haven't gone all Gaga or anything, but the smooth electro-pop jams that make up half of their new album, 'WYWH,' are bound to leave some fans scratching their heads. As founder Lisa Milberg explains, the shift from '60s-inspired indie-pop to dance music had to do with her climbing out from behind the drum kit and replacing frontwoman Victoria Bergsman, who left in 2006. "It's a combination of [...]

The self-proclaimed concrete-slash-jam-band Aussies use piano, some electric guitar, synthesizers, drum machines and some dreamy vocals to create their own unique sound. The guys have had a few EPs drop since 2007 and have just released their first self-titled LP. This album wastes no time warming up. [...]
Lifting The Weight Off Of The Concretes. The Concretes sans Victoria Bergsman? I had my doubts. When the lead singer of Sweden s most famous pop band (post Abba) left in 2007 to focus on her folkier solo project Taken By Trees (excellent in its own r ...

Annie Racz I liked Gregory & The Hawk's last record, 20082s Moenie & Kitchi . Really, I did. The combination of New Yorker Meredith Godreau's sweet, girlish voice and her gentle, mostly-acoustic, semi-orchestral folk-pop is like kryptonite to me and maybe that's why I was able to resist it - it's the sort of record I've bought a dozen times before and while it's not a style that I'm necessarily tired of, it is one that requires some above and beyond to really impress me. Which is why, [...]
With November already half way over, it's probably not too early to begin considering a New Year's resolution. This year, instead of promising to work out more often, eat more nutritiously, or give up your most favored vice, take a tip from Sweden's The Concretes , and plan a nice, long international trip. Just one week after the indie-pop outfit dropped WYWH , their first release in three years, they revealed a 16-date trek across the US and Canada. Taking place between January and March, The Concretes will break their North American [...]

2011 touring is a little bit like Christmas, bands announce their plans months in advance leaving 2010 feeling a bit neglected. The Concretes have a good excuse for planning their shows so early. The band need to travel all the way from their native Sweden. Fortunately, their album, WYWH , doesn't have to work out visas and passports, and is already currently available via Friendly Fire Recordings. Full schedule of tour dates is posted below. The Concretes tour dates: January 14 – Minneapolis, MN @ Triple Rock [...]

Frank Yang I'm sure it was only coincidence, but the fact that Mumford & Sons sold out the 3000+ capacity Sound Academy the night before Johnny Flynn was slated to play a solo date at Lee's Palace made for some interesting parallel drawing. The two toured together - along with some girl named Laura Marling who's gone on to do some stuff - a couple Autumns ago and Flynn headlined all of their Toronto debuts at the dinky Rivoli back in October 2008 . Not that playing Lee's [...]
